CS918 or the MX3

Looking to set up a few boxes in my house and my uncle's.

Wondering which is the best buy, don't need 4K.

One thing is, I want to configure one box with all the apps, skins, settings, add-ons, repositories etc etc. And flash the others, so I don't have to do each one individually. Is that possible with either?

I think CS918 has oldschool A/V cables (RCA), is that correct?

Could you guys help steer me into TV streaming bliss?

I've heard of these android TV boxes a few times and I've done some research on them and it seems to me that the boxes are basically an android OS that you can download apps off the play store and also third party apps that allow free TV and movie streaming. So I was hoping that you guys could point me to a box that seem to perform well and easily as there seems to be a hundred and one choices. What are the apps that are recommended that offer free streaming content and do they work well? Could I skip the box and just download a streaming all on my android phone and Chromecast it over to my TV? Thanks and I hope I didn't break a million rules

Sony Android TV - Aspect ratio issue while streaming Netflix and Youtube

Hi all,

I have a KDL43W800C, great TV. Recently, possibly since the latest update, Netflix and YouTube have been playing in an incorrect aspect ratio. Not 4:3 vs 16:9, but rather a weird one where there's a subtle vertical stretch through the middle of the image. I'm watching 16:9 content.

This is particularly noticeable when the camera is panning, and so it appears as though the image is stretched at the edges of the frame and not the centre, giving a fishbowl look when panning. closest thing i could google (non-linear aspect ratio), and a diagram i made

When watching TV it's fine. When watching DLNA sources, it's fine. Aspect ratio controls are not available while youtube and netflix are running.

Any ideas?

NBA League Pass International and Shield TV

Hi All, Has anyone had any experience with NBA League Pass international and the official app for Android TV (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nbaimd.gametime.nba2011). I tried using a friend's League pass account to check if it works. I can stream games on my Android Phone but when I try the same account for Shield TV the app says I need to have league pass premium. I can cast the games from my browser to my phone in full HD. This kinda doesn't make sense. Is anyone using league pass directly on their Shield/Nexus Player?

ShieldTV starts music automatically when the Shield powers on from standby

Does anyone else see this or know of a fix / workaround? When I turn on the TV and Shield it will immediately start playing music from Vevo/Google Music, sometimes resuming two separate streams at once. Even if the last app in use was completely unrelated to music when I shut it down, like Netflix.

Question about user accounts - Nvidia Shield TV

Hi guys,

I've just ordered a Shield TV and I've a question about user accounts. The Shield is for the house (wife & kids) but I have a lot of purchases on my main google account. Would I be able to login, install the apps, then logout of my main google account and still have any relevant apps working? (and then continue to buy these on a new "household" email address?) - essentially I don't want my kids noseying around my business.

Thanks,

Sony KDL-50W755C + Logitech Z506 5.1 - How to hook up

Hello!

I've bought my first Sony Android Tv just a few months ago and I'm quite satisfied with it. No problems whatsover so far.

Only thing that bothered me was the sound quality... so recently my gf surprised me with a 5.1 sound speaker system, with a Logitech Z506 5.1. However as I've checked it's not for TV-s (it has no optical input for example) its more so for a PC rather than a TV.

Logitech 5.1 Speakers

And the input\outputs for the TV is here:

Sony TV backside

Question is...how can I hook up the system so the 5.1 works? I don't want to send back the speakers since it was a present. Is it possible to properly make it work?

Thank in advance for the answers!

A couple of thoughts on 3rd party accessories, phone apps that have cast functionality but no app for ATV..

Hey guys, just wondering if someone is in the loops of stuff in terms of development!

Backstory: I love my Nvidia Shield, it does streaming so good and that's mainly why I bought it, I had a Nexus player before which I loved equally much but then I got a moving out gift (4k samsung tv!) so I got the Nvidia Shield and gifted the Nexus player to my parents as a thank you...

So here's the thing, I'd like to buy a keyboard+touchpad thing to use for apps like spotify and I'd like to use it with a browser (chrome please...).

Does anybody know why there isn't an official chrome app made for android tv?

Do you guys know if support is coming for chrome, or spotify or why we can't use regular play store apps on our devices? Isn't it just making them "launchback" enabled or something in the code, then bam, they resize to either landscape or not?

Sorry if these questions seem dumb but I think these devices are really cool and have endless possibilities.

For example, I have a viaplay account (it's a swedish mainly sport streaming service) and they have cast functionality luckily and an app for phones and tablets, but it'd be nice if it worked on it's own etc.. I've side loaded Spotify but it's mainly just so that I can "cast" to it using my phone..

Time to sleep now though, I hope I'll find some answers here tomorrow! goodnite!

Nvidia Shield TV and external HDDs

I have a Shield TV 16GB (brilliant device!) and on connecting an HDD it only shows up in EZ file explorer as usb://2005 I'd like to use this drive in Kodi to build a library for the movies & TV shows saved on there but it doesn't show up in sources. There's not even a mount point in /mnt or /storage For now, I've had to resort to plugging the HDD into my TP-Link w9980 and use Samba - it works, but the maximum speed is 9MB/s Any ideas? Thanks.

Any movement on Thumbs Up playlist in Google Play Music?

I saw an old thread asking about this but it's archived so I figured I would ask in a new thread.

I just recently got Shield TV and so far the biggest issue I've run into is the lack of Thumbs Up playlist in the GPM app. I use that as my main playlist (its pinned on my phone so any songs I like I have offline). At this point I have to just cast from my phone to get this playlist which is dumb.

Have there been any updates to this app recently? Any chance this will get fixed any time soon?

What's the reason that Netflix doesn't work on the Forge TV?

I've read a lot about Netflix not working on the Forge TV, but no reasons for exactly why. If it's in the Android TV Play Store, shouldn't it work regardless of device? (Similar to how apps in the phone Play Store work?)

Music sounds quality poor all of a sudden.

Hey guys, I just noticed this now but the sound quality from my Sony Android TV is awful. I listen to music on it a lot and usually it sounds great.

I currently have a small Denon plugged in via the headphone port, powering two small TDL cabinet speakers. Usually sound is great, but I've just noticed now that any music streamed from Spotify or Google Music is awful. Especially anything with lots of bass, it has that jumpy, weird sound as if it's streaming at a really low bit rate.

Had anyone else had this issue? I just checked and sound from Netflix was great, but again a bit poor from Youtube, although not as poor as GM of Spotify.

I'm currently going through process of elimination to figure out what it is, but if anyone else has any advice or had similar experiences, please let me know what I can do!

Edit: found the issue. If you have the TV volume set to max but the stereo set lower, the quality becomes very distorted.

Replacement Remote for the Nexus Player

The remote for my Nexus Player is terrible. It's never worked consistently, but has recently give up altogether even with fresh batteries, attempted resyncs, etc. Is this a problem with the remote's bluetooth transmitter or the Player's bluetooth hardware? Is there anything I can do to fix it (I've got root access), or should I just look for a replacement remote? If so, any suggestions? I think I've read the Fire TV remote works well, but I don't know if that can be purchased individually.

Stream Media from Cloud ?

Okay so I'm looking for a way to stream (without having to download) my media from the cloud (which at the moment is box.com) I understand that ES File Explorer can do something similar but the interface is hard to navigate sometimes without a mouse. I'm looking more for a slick media player built for android tv that you can easily navigate with a remote. Which is the best way to accomplish this, and how do I go about setting it up. BTW I'm using a nexus player.

Edit: also nothing that requires a server to run or forces you to pay some type of subscription fee (hinting at you Plex) :/

Has anyone tried to ring their device from Android Device Manager?

I was renaming devices earlier and noticed that my Nvidia Shield TV was among the list of devices. On selecting it I noticed I could ring it, but since I'm not around it right now I'm not actually sure what it will do. Has anyone tried this before and what did it do?
