Possible to copy APKs from Fire TV to Android TV? (Nvidia Shield TV)

It seems strange that the Fire TV has so many applications that are missing on Android TV. (i.e. History Channel app, Disney Channel apps, etc)

Is it possible to use my old Fire TV stick and copy the APKs somehow?

If so, can anybody point me in the right direction on how to do this? ...and can the applications later be updated?

Shield TV & External HDD

I just purchased a Shield TV, and it will be arriving in a few days.

My understanding is that the Shield TV never actually powers completely off, but goes into a sort of sleep mode.

How does this affect External/Portable HDDs? Ideally, when not in use those drives would power down completely.

Is that possible?

Android Shield TV $50 off Coupons - Amazon

EDIT: IF interested in this deal, contact Amazon. I did it through chat, but others have done it by phone. I was able to order it, then have it immediately adjusted to match the promo/coupon price. Others have reported the same

Apparently, a few people have received a coupon for $50 off of a Shield TV at Amazon, and they expire today.

I'm not sure what the trigger is, but I've had it in my cart quite a few times over the last few weeks, but just haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Any idea how to possibly trigger one of these? Or if someone has a code that they're not going to use, I'd appreciate it.

It'd be an instant buy for me.

Thanks!

Initial unboxing experience leaves MUCH to be desired...

Just got my nvidia shield tv- I have to say I was really disappointed at how terrible the initial experience was. I'm a pretty tech saavy guy, this is my 6th android device. I have an Android phone and tablet, both of which had fairly smooth onboarding processes.

I plugged the device directly into my router with an ethernet cable and turned it on. Ok, immediately I had a problem- the controller had arrived uncharged. I actually happen to have a programmable harmony remote that works with the shield so I was able to use that instead for the setup.

Next, it made me have to pair my device with a google account- I tried to use the "phone or computer" pin method. I tried with several different devices (a mac, another android phone), all connected to the same router, and every time it said it couldn't find my tv. I even tried restarting the nvidia shield not ethernet connected to the router and connecting via wifi, in case that would somehow make a difference, nothing worked.

So instead I switched to the method of entering my password- which I was really loathe to do- I have a custom google domain, and a very long, secure password which was agonizing to enter into the soft keyboard using a third party remote. Then, it told me I had to enter my 2-factor auth code, and the dialog didn't even work! It was a web view with no keyboard. I googled and found that this is actually a common issue with other people with 2fa on their account. FORTUNATELY, that forum also suggested a work around, which is to use a one time app password.

So that finally worked.

Now that it's set up I'm pretty happy with the device- it's my Plex/Netflix/HBO Go machine and I'm going to play around with the games later. But I just needed to vent about how horrible my out of the box experience was, and hopefully this helps anyone else who runs in the same issue jump straight to the one time password solution.

Using USB for Media on Nexus Player with Android 6.0

I have a 32GB drive formatted securely with my Nexus Player and being used for all app and Game data. However when i tried to add files like Movies, Pictures, or EMU ROMs, ES File Explorer is not able to read the drive. Will I need to use another USB drive that is not formatted for this purpose or does Android 6.0 on Android TV no longer allow for "user write" access to the USB drives?

Cast TWC TV app from ios to Shield TV

I've been trying to figure this out for hours now. Does anyone know of a way to cast the TWC TV app (ios) to the Shield TV? I've tried finding an ios app that does full phone mirroring to cast everything on the phone but can't find one. I'd rather just cast a chrome tab while logged into my TWC account but the damn website version never plays a video for me.

New Play Store On Shield TV "waiting for network"?

Anyone else get this message? I only get it when trying to install large files like Dead Effect 2 over 1gb. All small installs work fine. But the larger ones won't install and just infinitely stay on waiting for network. I have tried several different ones. I should say that it's connected through Ethernet and it is working. I can play my GForceNow games and other internet etc. Just curious if this is known or just me.

Shield TV - TV apps not working

I just got the Nvidia Shield TV today. I was lucky enough to get the $50 off coupon from Amazon. I've installed FX now as well as a couple other TV channel apps and when I go to authenticate my account (instructs me to go on my computer to a specified url and input the code that i shown on my shieldtv) it keeps telling me that my device is not supported. I'm very confused. I use TWC if that helps..

Edit: edited for my horrible grammar/spelling

TIL I can turn the TV on by pressing home button on my Nexus Player remote

Now only if there was a way to turn the TV off using Nexus Player remote, I don't have to use my TV remote ever.

May be they can add an option to turn the TV off when Nexus Player goes idle.

Fan.tv - Great universal search app

Not sure if this is a new app to Android TV but I just discovered Fan.tv. Great for discovery and universal search for at least Google Play, Netflix, Crackle, and Hulu. There may be others I haven't noticed yet. It's got trailers, reviews, cast info. Pretty much everything you'd want. The web version is good too and has a ton more services. Just wanted to share.
