Audio issues after watching Netflix

Hi everyone, I am loving my Shield but I am having one weird issue. This happens ONLY after watching Netflix. Upon exiting Netflix and going into live channels, Kodi, spmc, or any other app the audio is slowed way down and is distorted badly. As soon as I reboot the shield from the power menu the audio is fine again (just putting it to sleep and waking it up does not fix the issue). This does not happen when switiching between any other apps, so it has to be a Netflix issue, I just can't figure out what it cold be and how to correct it. If anyone else smarter than me (that's probably a huge number :-) ) can give me some direction or help I would greatly appreciate it Thanks

Does anyone else’s TV misreport the device name?

Plex, etc all insist on calling my Sony 50W805C “2015 BRAVIA 4K”, and it definitely isn’t 4K (unfortunately)

P.S. I don't know how to add photo in a post so here's the link for the photo i've taken.

IFTTT and Kodi+Android TV

I'm aware that Google assistant integration will arrive with Kodi 18 "Leia" but I thought I'd give it a shot anyways.

What I did:

I have an old Linux atom PC running on my network, so I wrote a quick .net core webAPI app to run on it hosted via nginx and some reverse proxy forwarding to the web app.

The app basically has various http GET actions in the controller that , when called, make a JSON RPC post call to the corresponding IP where Kodi is running (there are alot of guides on the Kodi web service api). It's helpful to set up a static IP for your android TV.

Next, add a NAT service routing rule so the Linux web app is exposed. If security is concern then limit it to HTTPS with a self signed cert.

Also, subscribe to a dynamic DNS provider if you can. I have a Synology NAS so I get that for free (*.synology.me)

Downloaded the IFTTT app and created a new IFTTT applet. the "IF this" step will be google assistant and what you want it to respond to e.g. "Kodi uptairs pause".

The "then that" step will be to launch a web hook. A web hook is an http call (get,post,etc...) Where you specify the method ,url, and optionally a request body to submit.

I can now pause/unpause movie playback in Kodi via Google home speakers :)

Keep in mind that you need to enable Kodi web services to do this, and Kodi needs to be running (it will still respond to events when in the background though).

Is there a programmable air mouse remote that you can program a cast button from your pc chrome browser to cast to android tv?

I've used some usb remotes on my shield but never used them on a pc yet. Is this even the right place to ask or should I ask in a windows or casting reddit?

I want to cast from bed without needing to click anything on my pc.

YouTube TV Adds more channels!

Yes I know it's not working on the Mi box yet, but YouTube TV has added several new channels INCLUDING TNT! In my opinion, they are quickly becoming the best OTT streaming service.

I found these resources to create launcher icons on the home screen for sideloaded apps

(crossposting this from nvidia shield)

Hey- I been poking around trying to find a decent AndoidTV web browser, with only middling success, and came across a couple things I thought the sub might find useful.

I used this webpage to create an apk that loads icons for a sideloaded app onto the home screen. (I had a sideloaded app that wasn't showing up on the home screen and used this link to create an apk that created an icon for that app on the homescreen.) And it works-

http://atvlauncher.trekgonewild.de/

There is also this link that does similar but I haven't used it. Passing along for reference:

http://nvidiashieldzone.com/shield-android-tv/apk2tv/

One tip- you have to know the actual package name of the app you're working with. Sites like apkmirror rename the files so it's hard to tell. So I used APK Icon Editor to open up some file in the app apk and found the package name listed in the code somewhere. I don't remember which file, some info file should work ok. Anyway, worked for me, so... enjoy-

(And for posterity the thread where I found the installers above: https://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tv/themes-apps/shortcuts-sideloaded-apps-t3514924)

I'm thinking about getting a Mi Box. Should I?

So, my TV isn't an smart one and I'm thinking about getting a Mi Box for, primarily, Netflix for the whole family and Twitch. I won't be pushing it hard with games and stuff. Should I get one? Is there any points I should watch out for when getting one?

Edit: as requested, my TV is an AOC LE32H1461.

Channels Comes to Android TV

Before getting my current Shield TV, I've been using an Apple TV 4th-gen and using the "Channels" app to watch live tv from my HDHomeRun networked tuner. This app runs well on Apple TV and performs better than Google's Live Channels when it comes to viewing networked tuners like the HDHomeRun (only use case for me on Live Channels), mainly due to this bug. The developers behind "Channels" just released an Android TV app!

It's a bit pricey to start with (the tvOS version is $24.99 as well) but I'm excited to see how good this app gets and hope it gets the same attention as the tvOS version does.

I've installed it and tested it out very briefly but am excited to try it out even more. Watching live tv from my HDHomeRun has been the main sore spot for me when I came to the Shield TV from my Apple TV so I'm excited they just released this.

And if you are interested, they also have a very good DVR that is $8/month and you use your computer/NAS/etc to download and stream your recordings to your compatible devices. Check out more here on their website. I promise I'm just a fan of channels and am in no way connected to them. I'm just excited to finally get this app on Android TV.

edit: Announcement from Channels dev

edit2: looks like DVR is coming for Android TV and Fire TV later in the year but this feature works great on Apple TV. "Channels for Android TV and Fire TV do not yet have support for Channels DVR, but they're guaranteed to get it later in the year."

edit3: a bit more clarity on my excitement ;)

Best Option for Second TV?

I'm moving to a new home. On the main floor I'll have an old Samsung 60" Plasma that I plan to keep (1080P, not 4k). Downstairs in the basement I'll have an LG C7P (4k). I'm planning on buying an NVIDIA Shield for the TV downstairs, but don't want to buy two. I will have my home theatre system down there as well (advice on hooking that up?).

I'll also have a Google Home on the main floor and my internet will be in the basement with Google WiFi. What's the best option for a cheap Android TV stick that I can control with either a remote or my phone (we both have Pixel 2s) for the main floor that will support good quality 1080P streaming, including live TV?

edit - brevity edit 2 - Thanks all... going with the Mi Box upstairs, especially since some say it has a better remote for guests. Going with Hulu Live for live TV
