Netflix stutter on Mi Box

Hi:

Just got a Mi Box Internation as my first Android TV device and its primary use is gonna be Netflix. Got it hooked up to a regular old 1080p LED display but it stutters every 10-15 seconds (it doesn't hiccup or break sound, just stops being smooth for a second or two and continues normally).

First, the Mi Box defaults to 720p on autodetect for some reason. It works smooth in all formats except 1080p60. I currently set it to 1080i60 and seems to work fine but it's obviously not ideal. Am I missing something? Can't this device (supposedly 4k capable) play 1080p decently?

External Hard-Disk as Internal Storage

UPDATE: DON'T TRY SETTING A PARTITION OF EXTERNAL STORAGE AS INTERNAL STORAGE. Mi Box JUST MERGED BOTH THE PARTITIONS AND FORMATTED THE COMPLETE HARD DISK AS INTERNAL. I LOST A 1 TB FULL OF MOVIES AND TV SHOWS :(

Hey guys! I have a Mi box and till now I was using a 16 GB pen drive for expanding the internal storage of the box but now 16 GB is very low for me. I don't know why though. I have a gigabit broadband and the router can transmit data at around 60-70 mbps at 5Ghz range but it seems slow for terrarium and other similar services (netflix, youtube and prime video works flawlessly).

I was thinking of using my external hard disk as internal and external storage at the same time. yesterday I tried partitioning the drive (40 GB for internal) and fortunately Mi box recognized the two partitions successfully BUT I'm a bit curious whether or not it is a good move for me. I fear that running my hard drive 16 hours everyday (plus few power cuts) might damage the drive.

Kindly advise!

Do external ethernet adapters work for an AndroidTV?

As the title suggests. My tv has a max 100mb/s ethernet, my wifi gets about 90 to 120mb/s connection. But it's not enough to play 4k via plex. I was wondering whether anyone knows if a gigabit ethernet adaptar would work.

Edit: Seems my problem is the new Plex update, it seems it screwed things up. Even movies or tv shows I already watched without any problem are now unplayable after the update.

After a couple days testing things out. My suggestions for Olympic coverage on Android TV.

Credit where credit is due, I got a lot of help from people over at the Addons4Kodi sub here.

Given:

  • You want this working with an AndroidTV UI
  • You do not want the PIA of casting from a phone/tablet
  • You want an English broadcast
  • You are regionally not in US/CA/UK
  • You do not have any provider logins
  • You do not have a US/CA/UK credit card
  • You have decently fast Internet

I am on Shield TVs and these are the options I found works the best:

Hulu is my best paid option. I finally got this working and this is what I am going with. I found a smart DNS service that works with Hulu (but not CBC, sadly, though they claim it does). PM me for the provider as I do not want to advertise or spam for them.

Pros

  • 50 hours of cloud DVR and all US coverage
  • High bitrate HD
  • Reliable service (no buffering or skips for me)

Cons

  • $40 with only a 7 day trial
  • That price and still no 4k
  • Requires a VPN/SmartDNS service that works (tried 3 VPNs before finding a working SmartDNS)
  • Only US coverage
  • Requires US payment but accepts Paypal (so I could safely use a bank account as I have no US credit card)

Made In Canada IPTV addon for Kodi. This is the best free option I found and I am also using this for Canadian broadcasts.

Pros

  • Free
  • US/UK/Canadain coverage (awesome!)
  • Kodi Addon

Cons

  • Many of the "channels" have poor reliability
  • Some channels require Canada or US IP (which can be mitigated by VPN/SmartDNS)

IPTV - VaderStreams tested. 2nd best paid option.

Pros

  • Mostly complete US/Canadian/UK coverage
  • Mostly HD
  • Some on demand Olympic content.

Cons

  • Trial is short and I spent most of my trial trying to figure out how to get it to work.
  • Requires you setup an IPTV client (easy with Kodi though)
  • Unreliable where I am, buffering, streams switching to low bitrate, disconnections.
  • No DVR though there do seem to be instructions on setting up DVRs with PIs and other "needs work" kind of thing.
  • Prices vary but seems to be around $20.
  • Only thanks to people over in the addons4kodi I could find a reliable seller, otherwise there are a lot of scams and fly by night operations.

Puffin Web browser with cbc.ca/olympics and nbcolympics.com. This is the 2nd best free option but Puffin browser has a terrible reputation. If you can find a better browser that has an AndroidTV UI and can playback media, please let me know!

Pros

  • Free
  • HD
  • Reliable at least for me
  • US and Canadian coverage but needs VPN juggling.

Cons

  • UI depending on your web browser
  • Puffin Web browser is awful for privacy and decency
  • Constantly having to switch VPNs to flip between US and Canadian coverage is a pain.

AndroidTV x86 for PC

https://forum.xda-developers.com/general/device-reviews-and-information/android-tv-x86-t3726365

Gave it a try myself, and it does in fact work. I know someone did this about a year ago, but it didn't work for much. This version does allow Play store to work and download. Doesn't work for Netflix yet, and I haven't found an Amazon video APK for x86 either yet but still great to see someone making it work on PC hardware.

BTW, unless I am mistaken, this requires EFI boot, so it wont work with older BIOS only systems. Make sure when you format you name the partitions exactly as he says, mine wouldn't boot at all until I named the partitions correctly.

How do I make remote control play/pause buttons to work?

Hi reddit, I bought a shitty Venz V10 Pro android box in order to run Netflix on my older TV.

See the product here: http://venztech.com/v10pro/

It came wit ha nice remote and everything worked smoothly, but when I use Netflix, the OK button or the play/pause, stop buttons do absolutely nothing.

Is there a way to program those buttons to do something?

Only way to pause a show now is to hit the back button. I appreciate any help. I have spent hours trying to navigate these Android menus with a poor remote.

Mi Box DD support for streaming services in the future?

I was wondering if Mi Box is going to get DD+ (Dolby Digital Plus) to DD (Dolby Digital) conversion for e.g. Netflix in the future (nougat?). Or should I just start looking for a DD+ capable amp.

Atm my amp only supports DD so all DD+ streaming service audio is played as 2.0 :(

And yes with kodi I can convert DD+ to DD but that doesn't really help when it comes to Netflix...

If I start looking for a new amp, what else should I be aware so that the amp would be at least somewhat future proof. 4K passthrough etc? Atm I am using Mibox with 720p video projector and a Pioneer VSX-519V amp in between and so far only thing missing is 5.1 in Netflix.

Is it possible to set a new default launcher on Mi Box? I've see it was once possible, but might be patched now.

Leanback Launcher is probably the worst part about AndroidTV. I'd love to set a new default launcher and bind it to the home key.

Update: Totally still possible, if a little convoluted. I needed to downgrade firmware to pre-ship, root, and use adb to hide the Leanback Launcher. I had TVLauncher ready to go when I did. Home button works like a champ now.

My Samsung "Smart Tv" is shit. What now?

So I bought a pretty good 800€ smart tv.

The problem is that that thing doesn't have a android tv, so it's pretty much shit and it's not accept very big mkv files (70GB)

I just want a tv box so I can hook up my 3tb hard drive basically.

Anyone recommends a good under 70€ box? Make sure it's compatible with 3TB hard drive.

DIRECTV NOW on Android TV ? The latest news...

Last year, 8 months ago, some people may remember I found some links to Technicolor's website that should have been confidential. Link: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/6fteym/att_will_soon_launch_an_android_tv_stb_to_go/

That's how I knew AT&T was launching a Set-Top-Box for their DIRECTV NOW service.

Info from Technicolor's website was talking about an 'Indigo' STB that's been used by Dish for their AirTV Player, that it's easy for AT&T to customize it, etc.

So I made some researched, I knew that the AirtTV code name was UIW4010ECH.

6 months ago I found on the FCC website a UIW4010TCH device, but most of the info was removed as both a short and a long term Confidentiality Request was made.

I could still find info saying the device was almost exactly the same as the AirTV, except it was all black and the power button had been moved to the bottom.

So I went back to the website, as the short confidential request expired, and found some interesting stuff.

__

So, will it also launch in the Android TV Play Store ? I don't know unfortunately, but lets hope the delay is linked to the launch of this STB, maybe they want the DVR feature to be ready first.

__

All this info is also available on my website, listing all future and existing Android TV, OEM, etc

what exactly is the problem of 4K video on the Mibox?

Hi, I've read here that the Mibox is good enough if you are only playing 1080p videos and not for 4K. I've tried a few youtube and demo 4k videos (located on a usb drive) on Kodi and they seem to work fine. Is there something I'm missing?

Thanks.

Is the Shield TV Truly Hands Free?

The Nvidia Spot is on its way. Does this mean that the Shield is now able to respond to voice commands without having to use the mic on the controller? If so, how responsive are the voice commands? Can you ask it to play a specific episode from a specific season of a TV show on Netflix? How is the PLEX integration? I currently have an Apple TV, but would love to have a (mostly) hands-free experience in the living room. If the Shield TV and a Spot can accomplish that, (and my next model doesn't randomly lag) I'm in.

Edit: Was notified that the device has not been released, but still planning for the future.
