How useful is the recommendations row?

I've been very interested in setting up Android TV as my main entertainment solution ever since Xbox started deprecating their best entertainment features (pinned TV shows/movies, universal search, etc.), and am considering taking the plunge thanks to an upcoming move.

I've seen the recommendations row as a consistent feature in every Android TV video I've watched, but the mast detailed information I've been able to find about it has been only been about customizing which apps can recommend content there, but have not found any passable explanation of how well the row works as a method to jump back into content you watch often, and as a way to discover new related content.

For instance, if I'm watching a lot of Comedians in Cars Getting coffee on Netflix, will the recommendations row recommend the enxt episode for me the next time I go to the home screen? If so, does it work for all apps or only certain ones? Or is it msotly just an avenue for apps to sponsor content to the front page?

I did see that the 'Up Next' feature in Oreo is supposed to support exactly this feature, but between the negligible adoption of 8.0 on actual devices, and the few stories I've read of the feature not working in the versions people have installed on their Nexus players, I'm not holding my breath.

So, what can you all tell me about your experiences with the recommendations row on your devices?

Thanks for your help!

New mi box on its way and had some netflix questions

Has the Netlix issue been fixed yet? If not, could I run into any Netflix problems if I use the box on a tv for initial setup, then move it later to another tv?

The setup tv will be a sharp 1080 or an old rca 720. Then, it will be on a cheap 4k Element tv.

I'm on the 4 stream netflix plan so don't think it's 4k but I don't know. Can a mi play Netflix 1080 plan on a 4k tv?

Also, should I leave auto update on or off?

Appreciate any advice. Thanks

AndroidTV apps are crap!

Love the platform but the apps are terrible!

Example: the PBS streaming app wont start were left off! I try to watch something on Nova and maybe have to leave halfway through. When I come home and start watching again it starts from the beginning! Ughhh!

Sony Bravia x900e doesn't support Google Advanced Protection

I can't login with advanced protection on. It doesn't recognize the FIDO usb key or the bluetooth key. I can't use my google account which basically eliminates half the features. All they need to do is add the udev rules here: https://github.com/Yubico/yubikey-personalization/blob/master/70-yubikey.rules

Does the DVR in Live Channels work?

I use a Shield with an HDHomerun and antenna. I have no problems using their "HD" program to watch shows and record them to an external hard drive. I tried out "Live Channels", which also works to view TV (and has a nicer guide), but won't work as a DVR. When I click on a show it says I need an exterrnal drive hooked up to use the DVR. Upon a reset now it just says "This show can't be recorded". I see no place to change settings to tell it where the external drive is. I cleared all its data and rolled back an update but nothing helps. Anyone get this to work?

Anyway to use Flixster on Android TV?

Is there any way to watch movies on Flixster on an Android TV.

I'd prefer not to sideload as I don't have a mouse attached to my TV.

I know I can Chromecast, but that involves having my phone handy; I'd prefer is anyone in the house could just access the movie library without needing access to my phone.

Are there any other solutions?

How do I disable auto play trailers when turning the TV on

My TV recently started doing this (SONY BRAVIA), and I can’t turn it off. All I want to do it go to my Apple TV like it used to.

My 3 year Old almost witnessed the trailer to IT... I had to drag her out the room! It’s a good job I didn’t turn the TV and leave the room!

This need fixing ASAP.

Problems watching tv channels via HDHomerun Prime & Kodi 17.x?

For some reason version 17 of Kodi seems to have issues trying to decode local channels via my HDHomerun Prime. All other normal cable channels worked fine, just the ones that are normally locally broadcasted struggle to play back. The quick fix was to use Live Channels app, which worked fine, but im not exactly in love with the Live Channels app.

The real fix was to turn off automatic updates in the Play Store, un-install Kodi 17.6 manually download and install Kodi 16.1. Local channels work fine now, be it the Nexus Player (quad core x86) or my Mi Box (quad core arm). Not sure whats going on in version 17, but its clearly an issue when it comes to local channels.

EDIT: I had a problem, found a solution through trial and error, so im posting the solution.

Sideloaded apps not under "apps"

Hi,

Reasonably new to Android TV.

Have loaded Popcorntime via APK+USB into my Sony Android TV, however it does not appear under the "Apps" list in the menu screen, meaning I have been using a third party file explorer to navigate to the root .exe to launch it every time.

Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks

Android TV and Daydream VR Casting

Has anyone had luck casting their Daydream VR to Android TV? I am unable to cast it to my Mi Box. When I try, it just drops back to the Android TV home screen.

As a longtime Android user and Android TV newcomer, I'm slightly let down by the experience.

Casting Netflix to Shield via Google Home - any work arounds?

I'm a new Shield owner and I'm one of the many who are disappointed with the issue with the Google Home not being able to cast Netflix. Has anyone come up with any creative solutions to resolve this issue? My wife and I are concerned this might be a deal breaker. We have a 1 year old and it's been nice to live in a world without remotes. Anyone have a neat work around to help me regain that functionality?

How to make the Harmony hub not suck?

I have a Sony TV, a Samsung soundbar and a 2017 Shield. Originally I was using a Flirc connected to the Shield with an old Harmony 350. This setup ran great, I was really impressed how responsive Flirc was, almost as good as the original remote. I recently purchased the Harmony companion remote with the hub on sale, I thought Bluetooth connectivity would be better then the Flirc. I was wrong. Before I toss this thing and go back to my old setup, I have some questions.

  • Is Bluetooth connectivity via the Harmony hub just generally more laggy then using a Flirc? The shitty remote that comes with the Shield is fast so it can't be Bluetooth. Is it just a feature of the hub?
  • Why is powering on/off the Sheild labeled as "manual", therefore I can't add the Sheild in my activity as a device I can turn on and off. When I select my activity, the TV and soundbar turn on, but to get my Sheild to power on I have to select the "Home" button every time to wake it from sleep.
  • When I hold down the Shield mapped OK/Select key it does nothing. Which means I can't get the menu in Kodi on selected items or hold down and drag and drop apps within the Android TV launcher. Again, no issues with Flirc and a Harmony 350.
  • Selecting an activity (only have one right now) is always inconsistent. Sometimes the hub will turn on all my devices (except the Shield), sometimes it won't, or some of them. Had none of these issues with my Harmony 350.
  • Any other tips to get this setup to not suck so much as it does now?
