Getting mobile/tablet apk working on android tv?

My Tv provider has a legit streaming app with login etc that works on android (as well as a web login, but that uses cisco videoguard plugin), but when I sideloaded the tablet apk onto my android tv, the login fails.

Is there a way to spoof hardware version or anything like that which would let me use the tablet app?

I wanted a remote for my Shield that would give me full functionality for cheap, here's what I found.

I have the first gen Shield TV (with the clunky old controller and no remote) and wanted to get a decent remote that would work with the interface and offer a keyboard, so I went through a couple of cheapo options on Amazon and finally found one that does everything right.

The first few I tried either had connection or functionality problems, mostly the back buttons didn't work. After a bit of trial and error I found this one:

https://smile.amazon.com/Favormates-Wireless-Keyboard-infrared-Raspberry/dp/B01N0SUUZS

It's got backlighting on the front and back, the android control buttons (home, menu, back) all work, the media controls all work, and the keyboard works with most apps. The microphone doesn't work (that I can figure out) and there are a lot of unused functions, and the airmouse feature is (inherently) clunky and doesn't work great.

Anyways, if you're looking for a cheap replacement remote for your Android TV setup then give this a try, $14 and it's more functional than the $50 official remote.

how to open (some) system apps on android tv?

Does anybody know how to open some apps such as Google or Facebook, or how to enter on the Android settings? I have 5.1.1 on a Philips tv, but I am unable to open some apps even if they are installed (Google). Why??

Finally! An app that makes use of previews in Oreo launcher...

So I've just noticed that Red Bull TV makes use of video previews and Watch Next on the Oreo launcher.

This must surely be the first to utilise video previews? Not even YouTube or any of the Google apps do.

Sadly it also makes the homescreen slow down from what I can see.

Is there ANY way to restart a long Youtube video from the beginning on AndroidTV/Nvidia Shield?

As it is, if there's a long video that I started watching, but want to restart from the beginning, I have to sit there and rewind it thing like I'm on a fricken VCR.

Tell me I'm missing something, as I can't see anything that will restart a long video from the beginning. Just using the official Youtube app on my Nvidia Shield.

Netflix on Nexus Player - sync issues with 5.1 audio

Does anyone else experience issues where video and audio fall out of sync after about 3-5 minutes of watching shows from Netflix?

It's only when watching programmes where the audio stream is in 5.1 and if you change it to just English (no 5.1) it works absolutely fine.

I have no need for 5.1 as don't have 5.1 speakers so would like to have it default to without 5.1 but after searching it appears this can't be done. Any ideas why this might be happening?

How long is your gen 1 remote battery lasting between charges?

I used my headphones daily on mine for first 3 months until now which it's only being used to control my shield and it seems to be draining faster than it should. Don't think it'll go a week without needing to be charged. I stream for about 6hrs a day since I'm not working.

Appreciate those who can post their experience. Thanks.

Latest Fire TV Directv Now beta works great on Android TV

Directv just sent out all beta users a notice that they can download the fire tv beta from the amazon app store.

I found that if you pull the apk from the fire tv and side load it and the amazon app store onto android tv, it works perfectly.

Steps to install:

  1. Download the directv now beta apk (I did not upload this and cannot verify contents: https://m.sendspace.com/file/xrht74)
  2. "Purchase" the Directv NOW beta from your amazon account: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073PLVJ1P
  3. Install a browser on your android TV (sideload chrome, firefox, or install puffinTV: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cloudmosa.puffinTV)
  4. Install the directv now beta apk on your android tv and launch it, it will say you need the amazon app store, select help and it will launch the web browser.
  5. Download the amazon app store, launch it, and login to your amazon account - You will need a mouse and possibly a keyboard to login
  6. Launch directv now beta and login. Done!

Live tv , on demand, cloud dvr, 5.1 , HD all works! It even shows up on the home screen launcher

Tv Box Boot Loop

I have a Android TV box, a "NexBox A95X" it was for over a month without use and today I was about to use it and it started "optimizing applications" but every time it's about to finish it reboots and goes through the same process again, I was doing some research, looks like it's not super uncommon on Android devices but people just go through recovery mode and factory reset the phone or restore from a SD with a back up... Well, there's no way for me to go to the recovery menu o the Box since it has no buttons... Is there any way to solve this?

Alexa works exceptionally well with my Sony Bravia running AndroidTV. OK Google, barely at all. WTF?

I have a 2016 Sony Bravia with AndroidTV and Alexa voice control. I also have a few Amazon Echos, and a Google Home Mini. I named the television “TV” to keep things simple.

“Alexa, turn on TV” works fine.

“Alexa, turn off TV” also works fine.

“OK Google, turn on TV” gets me this dumb response: “I also need to know which device to use. Try saying that again, and include the device’s name.”

“Okay Google, turn on YouTube on TV” works, but then after TV turns on, it starts playing music off YouTube. There appears to be no simple command to simply turn on the TV and take me to the home screen. This is stupid.

“Okay Google, turn off the TV” gets me “I couldn’t turn off the TV, check your device manual to make sure this command is possible” and sometimes “I also need to know which device to use. Try saying that again, and include the device’s name.” This is really, really stupid.

I can tell Alexa to mute the TV, change the volume, change inputs, play/pause/FF/rewind (which works on installed apps, including Kodi, my AppleTV by way of HDMI-CEC, as well as my DVR by way of IR blaster.)

OK Google can do none of these.

It seems absurd to me that Alexa works better with this AndroidTV than Google’s own voice assistant does.

Local audio app with "smart playlists"?

I have a large collection of audio files stored on my local network. Kodi is fine as an app to play an album. What I miss is an app that would pick "smart mixes" based on local content, similar to how spotify or youtube would create a playlist based on the first song you choose.

Is something like that available for AndroidTV? What are people using?

firefox for android tv is a nice remote-friendly (finally) browser that i don't think people know about yet.

it was mentioned here 2 weeks ago but only got 3 votes https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/7mtlkn/firefox_for_android_tv/

you can sideload it from apkmirror here https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/mozilla/firefox-android-tv/firefox-android-tv-1-0-2-release/firefox-android-tv-1-0-2-android-apk-download/

i have tested it on the mibox 6.0 only. runs smooth. launches with a URL bar and under that is 10 boxes of pre-saved bookmarks/shortcuts. you navigate with a big (too big imo but not huge) blue dot on the screen. it jumps about 1/20th of the screen with each click on the remote dpad and it scrolls the page when you get to page edges. when you need to type something, you move the blue dot to the box you want to fill in and hit the ok button on the remote and the onscreen keyboard pops up. you can complete auto-fills by hitting the 'go' on the far right of the keyboard.

incomplete/missing features: no editing the 10 bookmarks/shortcuts. no saving new bookmarks/shortcuts. no changing the blue dot size (minor in the grand scheme of things). there's a pull-out menu that brings up back/forward/refresh but you can only get to it by mouse not remote (left click on left edge of screen while you're browsing and pull it to the right). the remote's back function works fine but can't do forward or refresh. no tabs for multiple instances.

i haven't tried too many sites because i was mainly interested in testing video. i input a sports stream website i use and the video played perfectly. then i checked a site that uses flash video still and that failed. then i tried another site and i got a please disable adblock message so i guess it has adblock built-in. lastly, i tried amazon's site to play video and that failed. it wouldn't play it in the browser and wanted to open an app to do so. i directed it to the play store and it shows the prime app with no options to do anything. so i directed it to aptoidtv to install from there and it installed fine but that version of prime still doesn't work. it will play a video for a bit then have an error on that video while it plays and eventually punts you out of the video.

TLDR fast, adblock, great with remote. no favorites, no tabs, no flash videos, no amazon prime video.

if you play around with it and find something cool, let me/us know.

Unable to play anything on Sony Bravia KDL-50W800C from Google Home Mini (2018)

The TV has built-in Chromecast and I can cast screen and YouTube videos on it from my phone. But I can't play anything from the Google Home Mini - neither on YouTube nor on Google Play Music. When asked, the assistant says it's playing the video/music on KDL-50W800C, but nothing appears on the TV screen whatsoever. The Home app on the phone shows both the TV and Home Mini and both are connected to the same wireless network. I'm totally at my wit's end now. Any help on this matter will be much appreciated.
