Ethernet for MiBox

Whenever I am streaming any live tv or sports via spmc it constantly lags and buffers. Would getting a USB to Ethernet adapter solve this issue? Does the Ethernet cable increase speeds on the mi box? Thanks.

Shield TV remote vs MI Box Remote

My kids constantly losing Shield's remote in the couch. This never happens with the Roku remote I think because it has more bulk to it. Sideclick just started shipping Mi Box Remote version and I'm wondering how close they are to a Shield remote.

Mi Box 4K - Max supported HDCP Level?

When I connect my MiBox to HDCP 2.2 port on my TV I get (presumably this port is 2.2 only):

HDCP Level: unprotected
HDCP Max: 1.x

However when I connect to other ports I get

HDCP Level: 1.x
HDCP Max: 1.x

With unprotected, obviously netflix doesn't work. In 1.x protected it works, but it will only give me 1080p output, correct? I don't care about 4K output from netflix, I don't even have that plan; but do I lose anything else? I noticed I cannot set kodi to anything above 1080p, but doubt they check for HDCP?

Does anyone have 2.2 working at all?

Edit:

When I set the MiBox to use 4K2K@60Hz and connected to hdcp 2.2 port it finally appears to support hdcp 2.2

So:

  • normal port, 1080p: hdcp 1.x works
  • hdcp 2.2 port port, 1080p: hdcp unprotected
  • hdcp 2.2 port, 4k: hdcp 2.2

in short, I was stupid for not testing that. But I think it's kinda counterintuitive when HDCP 2.2 port ONLY supports HDCP 2.2, and ONLY in 4K mode. But lesson learned.

Mi box vpn slow speeds

I own a Nvidia shield. I needed a second device for my other living area. I did not want to spend another 200 bucks. I decided to get the mi box from Wally world. It's a little slower but overall Im very impressed with it. The only downfall I have found is my vpn which is pia runs really slow when connected to any of the servers. The apk is side loaded, I even tried using a openvpn app and just uploaded the server information, that also gave me very slow speeds. My shield gets 95 percent speeds connected to vpn so does my axon 7 connected through Wi-Fi. Anybody else have this issue? Thanks in advance

Is it worth using SPMC over Kodi on my Sony TV?

I'm using Kodi/Plex for kodi as my main media player. I find it does everything fine. But apparently SPMC is more optimized for Android TV's, what benefits does it have over the kodi app?

Android TV: Fire TV vs Mi Box

I currently have a Nexus Player and I really love the device, it just works (mostly). Unfortunately, the lack of HEVC/x265 10bit is becoming a deal breaker. Ideally, I'd buy another Nexus device since it ensures stock UI and prompt updates but that is no longer an option. The obvious solution would be to get Shield TV. Since I'm not much of a gamer, not even casual gamer, Shield TV is kind of expensive for streaming duties. Personally, I'm leaning towards the Fire TV since it has an Ethernet port and Amazon seems to update the device (???). I hate the Amazon bloat but the lack of Ethernet port on Mi Box really bothers me. I was hoping to hear from device owners about their experiences.

[Update] HBO Now Investigating Dolby 5.1 Audio on Shield TV

I finally got through to someone higher up in the food chain. I have been informed that HBO Now is receiving mixed feedback from customers on Dolby 5.1 audio working on the Shield. As such, they have reached out to NVIDIA and are attempting to resolve the situation. They put me on some list to be notified when the service has been fixed.

Starz app no longer supports Dolby 5.1 Audio [Official Response from Starz]

I called last week to get an answer on this. The case got escalated and I received a response today.

Initial email:

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. The STARZ app provides a stereo mix. This would give you left and right audio but it would not give you surround, which is what is seems like you are asking about. We are working on providing a surround mix in future builds.

Regards,

-Jason

I replied, asking if I was crazy or if the app used to support 5.1 (I thought I remembered it supporting it, being the only 1 of the big 3, Starz, HBO and Showtime). I received another response:

Hello,

Thanks for the response. The app did have 5.1 in the past on Android TV. A change in the OS caused us to move to a stereo feed until an underlining issue is resolved. I do not have a timeframe on when that will be resolved and when 5.1 will be available again.

Regards,

-Jason
