ShieldTV USB Audio Question

So I upgraded my MiBox to a ShieldTV, and the one thing I am missing is an analogue output for my Multi-Zone amp..

Does anyone know if a USB DAC Sound card can output stereo while Surround Sound still passes out HDMI? It worked on the MiBox, allowing me to play music on the AndroidTv that plays through all the speakers in the house.

I dont really care if the DAC cant handle surround sound sources, its just for music.. I wont be playing a movie out on the back patio or in the garage.. I dont want to loose the HDMI 5.1 Audio feature that remixes all stereo into 5.1 for the main speakers tho, I'm loving not having to switch my AVR to ProLogic for Stereo sources.

Really trying to avoid an HDMI Audio Splitter, and I wont need one if the USB Sound card will work at the same time as HDMI Audio

Cheers, -n

Video cataloguing app for Android TV?

I am looking for an app that let's me view my local video collection in a usable way.

I've been using MXPlayer, which is not bad, but I would like the thumbnails to be larger.

I did try Archos Video Player, which has a great interface and scrapes, allowing you to associate fanart and descriptions and stuff, but what I didn't like was 1) it was scanning my entire hard drive, and I only wanted to select certain folders (it's possible to remove video from library, but I don't want to do this one by one), and to a lesser extent 2) it wasn't easy to correct the fanart/titles (a video I had named "wedding" was linked to a movie by the same name). But at the same time as cataloguing my local movies, I also want to be able to have a nice overview of my home-/cellphone-videos.

Ideally what I'd like:

  • Folder support: show/hide, look in folders, etc
  • Easy scraping (automatic and manual)
  • Viewing progress
  • Sorting options (genres, name, etc)
  • Parental lock (via PIN or something)
  • Nice interface with decent size thumbnails which make good use of the real estate: I don't want to see only 5 movies at a time and have to scroll forever. maybe also seeing a preview like some video apps/sites have, as if they were animated GIFs, especially useful for personal content (cell videos) which maybe doesn't have a meaningful name
  • Import/Export settings, or somehow to back them up

Any suggestions?

Retroarch on Mi Tv Box showing old/mobile UI

Hi everyone, I hope this is the right place to ask. I've got a Xiaomi Mi Android TV Box, which pairs perfectly with a wired 360 controller. I want to use Retroarch, however when I install it, it shows the old mobile UI (the one with three tabs on the bottom, touchscreen overlays etc) and not the new, fancy, PS3-like one. It works and everything, but it's far from ideal on the TV. I tried to navigate the settings but I had no luck. I installed it from the Google Play Store, so it's the latest version. Also, I did all OTAs available for my tv box. Any help? Thanks

MakeMKV distortion issue

I posted this in r/cordcutters but that subreddit is just filled with a bunch of people posting about verizon and Netflix and I know you guys are very active and knowledgeable so I'll ask here:

So I recently bought a Blu-ray drive for my pc because I want to rip my movies to stream from my Plex server to my Shield TV. I've been using MakeMKV for the rips. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E7B08MS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This is the Blu-ray drive I purchased and while it reads the movies just fine, every time I rip certain movies I get distortion like flashing glitch colors every now and then at the same time no matter how many time I re-rip them. I make sure that the bottom of the discs are spotless and I keep very good care of them but I just can't stomach that distortion in the playback and ruins the experience for me. I'm wondering if its a possibility that my drive could be reading the discs too slow and I need a faster one or if there is an interference with software. I'm literally out of ideas and any info could be really helpful!!!

Do all Android TVs share the Google Play store?

Hi everyone, I'm having trouble understanding Android TV as a product. Similar to how all Android Phones share the same apps, do all Android TVs share the same apps?

Asked another way, the LeEco Ecotv (Smart TV) says its powered by Android TV but YouTube videos show that the Google Play store is disabled on that device but there's still an ability to "side load" via APK file?

I am so confused about how to define Android TV and also how to define the LeEco TV which seems to have its own app store separate from Google Play but can still be side loaded with Google Play APKs?

NVIDIA Shield TV (first gen) network issues after upgrade

I need some help, here. I have been using my first gen Shield TV for a couple of years now, and everything has been great. I did the 5.0.3 upgrade to Nougat the other day, and I was no longer able to pull a DHCP lease. I RMA'd the unit, hoping that it was an issue that could be resolved thusly...but the new one is having the same issue. Anyone else experiencing this? Setting a static address seems to work, at least some of the time.

YouTube app on Mi Box doesn't have support for TV codes?

Every YouTube app I've used on streaming box had an option to allow the use of a TV code to run videos to the YouTube app. Except for this one and it's official android.

Am I doing something wrong here? Does android tv YouTube app really not have support for "tv code" pairing?

Is a used Gen 1 Shield worth $150?

I'm struggling to decide which Android TV or Chromecast to get with my new 4k TV.

  • If money weren't an issue, the Gen 2 Shield would be an obvious winner, but money IS an issue... (i'm trying to save up for a Nintendo Switch ASAP).

  • The CC Ultra sounds great, and is only $60 now. But it doesn't have a standalone remote, or run standalone apps. I'd rather get my feet wet with Android TV...

  • The Xiaomi Mi Box hits a sweet spot with price, 4k capabilities, and Android TV, but reviews say it doesn't perform well with 4k. And who knows how Xiaomi will support it...

So now I'm browsing ebay, thinking $150 is the max I'd pay for a Gen 1 Shield. Do you think it's worth that much?

Update:

I'm struggling to even find used 1st Gens Shields for $150. Amazon is selling refurbs for $170. If you're looking to sell yours, PM me.

I also want to try out the Mi Box from Wal-Mart, and return it if it's not up to par for me.
