Has anyone tried sideloading DirectTV app?

I have a Sony tv with android tv and I was wondering if, with a direct TV subscription, I can watch live TV by sideloading their app for tablets. Does it have an HDMI restriction? Thank you.

Where do you get your sideloaded apks and how can you be sure they are for aTV?

I noticed that some apps come in a specific Android TV version, for example some will be com.xx.android and com.xx.atv : where do you download your apks from and is there a site that lets you select the specific platform you want to download your app for? I wanna be sure I'm downloading the corresponding app like I would taking it from the play store through my Sony TV. Thank you.

p.s. by the way can android apps recognize and automatically "adapt" depending on what device you are installing them?

New androidTV user (Sony tv) some questions about region changing and apk sideloading

Hi everyone I'm planning of buying a Sony 43XD8099 (X800D in the US). Starting by saying I live in Italy I have some questions:

1)I wanna be able to access US apps, has anyone tried to change region of the play store? as far as I understand I should be fine using a US google account (I read that changing country to an existing account doesn't work). When you select your country on the initial setup, is that is used to get your channels in the right order? in that case I'd need to select my real country right? Can you use 2 google accounts on the same tv? Does that mess things up?

2)In case I decide to just sideload apks without worrying about changing region, is there a way to auto-update or at least automatically check sideloaded apps? to my knowledge android checks updates only of play store downloaded apps

Thank you for your help!

Amazon Video error 9353?

Has anyone seen this error? I just tried amazon video for the first time on my Sony 700D after performing a software update, and now I can't connect to the service, failing immediately upon opening the app. It works fine from my TiVo, however.

The error code is not listed in their error database, and there aren't many helpful results on google.

SOLVED: per /u/BillEndure, clearing the app system data or de-registering the device in Amazon resolves the issue. After doing so, you are prompted to re-register the device, which restore normal functionality.

Limit WiFi frequency to 5GHz?

Is there any way to limit WiFi frequency to 5GHz in AndroidTV? I have a Mi Box in an apartment where both 2.4GHz and 5GHz are broadcast under the same SSID and I don't have control over the router.

Seems to be the cheapest price $118 cad vs $140 on ebay (aside from the long wait for shipping).

Xiaomi mi box won't connect to WiFi for more that 2 second at a time.

My Xiaomi me box stopped connecting to wifi 2 days ago. Now it connects for 2 seconds than disconnects for 2 seconds and keeps doing this. Any idea how I can fix this?

Edit: so it worked again for half an hour. Then I put the box to sleep and now when I turned it on again the same problem is back. Randomly works and stops working.

Does Android TV support username/password authentication wifi networks?

I'm thinking of getting a Mi Box to bring to university. At my school we use the eduroam network, which asks for a username/password for authentication. It also uses TTLS security and PEAP phase 2 authentication. On most devices (Apple, Windows, Linux desktop/mobile OSes) we need to run configuration programs that install certificates and programs, but Android (at least the phone/tablet form factor) is usually very nice in that we don't need to run any configuration program (though one is available on Google Play Store). We just need to go to Advanced Settings on the eduroam wifi network, enter our school email as username, password, TTLS as security, and PEAP as phase 2 authentication, and then it just works, no certificates or anything.

Has anybody here ever tried to set up an Android TV on a network like this? Are these options available for such a network on the OS?

Also, another thing. I have Private Internet Access VPN. There is a phone/tablet form factor Android app for PIA available, but not a TV form factor version. Can I still use the VPN? There are also OpenVPN configurations for PIA available, and I read somewhere that there is a functioning Android TV OpenVPN app available. Can anyone confirm?

Gave up on the Mi Box, went for a second Shield TV

I got a 4K TV by accident. I ordered the 1080p version of Vizio and got the 4K version by mistake. Best Buy took care of the price difference, but I returned the Vizio and bought an LG 4K instead.

I wanted to like the Mi Box. I really did. I didn't want to move my Shield TV, as it is hooked up to my 1080p TV in my game room, and all I needed the Mi Box to do was deliver 4K Netflix and YouTube.

It's the little things. Like, It doesn't always wake with my Harmony Remote. In fact, it almost never did. No change to the power settings made it work reliably.

It also doesn't work with a USB Ethernet adapter. At least not well. I have a rock solid WiFi network so the Mi Box always gets at least 100Mbps, usually closer to 150 on every fast.com speed test. Plug in a USB Ethernet adapter and no speed test hits above 10Mbps.

There is also the lack of a play/pause button or even command for the Harmony. The center button is fine in most cases, but some apps require the command.

There's also the Vudu issue. I have Gigabit internet, and on every other device in my house Vudu (and every other streaming app) just screams. Vudu looks amazing. Everywhere but the Mi Box. The video stutters in every single video that we stream. It's so noticeable that my 4 year old sees it. Nonstop stuttering. Non. Stop.

And then YouTube. The Mi Box cannot deliver 4K video in the YouTube app. It pulls up short every single time. Most 4K videos play in 1080p, but some play in whatever resolution falls between 4K and 1080p. And every single 1080p 60fps video skips, stutters and buffers until you stop watching in frustration.

The new Shield TV in the same spot as the Mi Box, using the same Ethernet cable that was at one time hooked up to the Mi Box is killing it. Not a single stutter or skip in Vudu. 4K YouTube and Netflix titles are playing in 4K. No skips. No stutters.

The Mi Box is now hooked up to our home office TV. If it can't do the job in there, I'll put it in a drawer somewhere.

tl;dr too many drawbacks to the Mi Box. Replaced it with a second Shield TV for 4K. Got the Best Buy surprise remote in the box package. I had no idea they were doing that.

Sony BRAVIA KD55XD8599 voice control

Hello, I need some help with my new android TV. I got two remotes with it: a normal one and one with voice control than I can't seem to figure out how to use.

I go to press the microphone on the remote but nothing happens, it just doesn't do anything. It's like it doesn't hear my voice at all. Now, I don't know what I'm doing wrong, tbh. Maybe some of them experienced the same and can help me?

Can't watch Ultra HD shows from Amazon Video on my Shield TV.

I am able to watch HD shows, but when i try to watch any Ultra HD, it just keeps trying to load and finally crashes. I am able to watch 4k YouTube videos. I just got these https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-High-Speed-HDMI-Cable-Standard/dp/B014I8SSD0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1479502370&sr=8-3&keywords=hdmi+cable to see if there's any changes and it's still same thing. I have a KS8000 TV and i can watch the Ultra HD Videos through the TV app, but not through the Shield TV. Is there something i'm doing wrong?

HDMI settings is at 4k 60Hz (recommended).

I don't have Netflix Ultra HD to test if that would work.

MiBox Bluetooth replacement remotes

I'm interested in hearing everyone's experience with replacement Bluetooth remotes for the US Mi box. The original Amazon Fire TV Stick remote seems to work decently well with it. Any others? I'm not interested in irc or USB dongle remotes. Really looking for the Bluetooth replacement. Thanxx!
