Anything better than the Nvidia Shield for streaming content?

I own the the shield (2017) and use it mainly for Kodi, Netflix etc and am quite happy about it. Curious if there's anything else out there that could be better in terms of performance.

Unable to install apk on Sony ATV

For some reason I’m unable to install third party apks on my Sony ATV any more.

I’ve tried turning off the Verify Apps toggle in the Settings > Security & restrictions menu.

However turning it off seems not to “stick”.

When I try to install any apk, the install button is grayed out. I’ve found the way around that, but then a pop up saying “Google Play Protect” comes up asking to allow the apk to be installed. Clicking on the Allow button does nothing. At that point the TV stops responding to any key other than the Back button.

Is there any way to disable this Play Protect?

Speed issues with leelbox and VPN

16GB Leelbox. Ethernet connection. I get about 65MBs with no VPN. When I log into VPN it drops to 8-10 MBs. Similar results when I use wifi instead of ethernet. I log in via the PIA android app. I've tried multiple servers with same results.

By comparison, on my laptop, when I enable PIA locally, I only lose 5%-10% of my Internet speed.

Mi Box 3 vs Fire TV Stick 4K

I've a had a Mi Box 3 for a couple of years now in my media room and Fire TV Sticks on the secondary TV's. The Fire TV Sticks were always just enough media device for secondary watching areas but the extra oomph that the Mi Box 3 provided was nice for the media room. When Amazon announced the Fire TV Stick 4K I figured I give it a shot and see if it could replace the Mi Box 3 as the media room streaming device.

First off let me start by saying I don't have any major complaints about the Mi Box 3 (which is running Oreo) that can't be overcome with minimal effort on my part. Biggest complaint would be the audio artifacts that I get through my surround system that is connected to my Denon AVR-X3000 receiver when playing back anything with E-AC3 audio, including Netflix and Prime streams and even offline files. I also have an Apple TV 4 so I usually use that for Netflix or Prime streaming since it decodes everything to PCM and that eliminates the E-AC3 artifacting. I never did like that way that the Apple TV 4 handles subtitles for Netflix or Prime Video so for some content that is a bit of an irritant. Realistically though that is more about personal preference and not really an issue with the device itself. For offline files I've always just used FFmpeg to convert the E-AC3 track to a standard AC3 track before moving the files to my NAS. Also, like most of you, I do sometimes have the issue of not being able to wake the Mi Box 3 from sleep using the remote but to be fair that isn't that often.

So last night my Fire TV Stick 4K arrived and I set out to get it setup in the media room. Prior to the Fire TV Stick 4K arriving I'd picked up an extra OTG power cable and a UGreen USB/LAN hub that I've had success with on other Android devices without LAN ports. Biggest plus for this device is that it features USB 3.0 and gigabit LAN. This allows for LAN speeds of upwards of 300Mbs over wired LAN through the Android devices USB 2.0 port and its rock solid. After connecting the OTG cable and USB/LAN hub to the Fire TV Stick 4K and plugging it in we were off to the races. The Fire TV Stick 4K instantly recognized the OTG attached USB/LAN hub and downloaded an available OS update and restarted. After that a quick walkthrough of the setup for the new (and excellent) 2nd gen Alexa Voice Remote which supported both my Sony TV and my Denon receiver. My TV isn't UHD and so I can't speak to the 4K or HDR performance of the Fire TV Stick 4K but I can say that it is very snappy. Much faster than the previous gen Fire TV Stick and easily on par with the performance of the Mi Box 3, at least from a real life user perspective. Details on the MT8695 have been hard to come by but AIDA64 confirms that the CPU is in fact based on ARM Cortex-A53 architecture. From an audio standpoint I set the audio output of the Fire TV Stick 4K to Dolby Digital only and when testing Netflix and Prime Video my receiver reports Dolby Digital 5.1 instead of Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 which means that the Fire TV Stick 4K has a proper Dolby license and converts DD+ to DD properly. This mean no audio artifacts for Netflix or Prime Video. I also didn't notice any audio dropouts while watching Netflix for an hour or so last night. On the flip side it doesn't appear that the Fire TV Stick 4K supports the passthrough of HD audio streams in Kodi as you can only enable passthrough for AC3, EAC3 and DTS. I tried playing a couple of network files with TrueHD 7.1 and DTS-HD MA 7.1 audio streams and they were decoded to PCM 7.1 before being passed to the AVR. Otherwise Kodi performance is excellent on the new Fire TV Stick 4K.

So overall I'm very impressed with Amazon's new Fire TV Stick 4K and would easily recommend it to anyone considering a Mi Box 3, Mi Box S, JetStream TV or any Chinese "Android TV" device (such as those from Mecool). Sure the Amazon OS eco system is a little garish but the stability of the system is way ahead of any thing that isn't an nVidia Shield. There is no YouTube app on the Fire OS but you can always sideload the official Google Play YouTube for Android TV app or view it through the Firefox or Silk browser apps. Outside of the significantly more expensive nVidia Shield TV I think that the new Fire TV Stick 4K is the best current option for an Android based media streamer.

Mi Box 3 just dead?

So one day it was working, now it's not doing anything. I've tried power cycling to no avail. I was wondering at first if it was the HDMI cable but it never shows up on my network or as a cast target after a few minutes. Lights come on when I plug it in but that's all I've got. Any ideas what I can try to revive it?

Pairing Bluetooth headphones to Sony AndroidTV

I have had my Sony for a while now, and while I do love the flexibility of having android I really dislike the terrible remote, the laggyness and the keyboard choice. Coming from an LGTV their remote really is magic.

But I think what gets me the most is how buried in the settings the Bluetooth menu is. There’s a quick sound settings menu, but it has zero BT options. Is there anyway to connect my BT headphones to the TV that doesn’t need me to go through the whole settings page?

CEC questions

Hi,
Firstly I was wondering if anyone has experience with the Jetstream box and HDMI-CEC?

Since i would like to put away my TV remote in a drawer or something I'm also wondering if it's possible to change source using the remote for a AndroidTV box? I've seen that it can be done with a Roku. There is "tiles" in the menu called HDMI1 HDMI2 etc.

Oh, and is there any information on when we can expect the Jetstream in Europe?

Thank you

Find a good box

I am looking for an Android TV box, however I'm relatively new to the Android TV scene. I don't really know what is good and what is not. I would like a TV box that is somewhat high-powered and is under the $100 limit. Is this possible? Also I have a 1 terabyte SATA drive, can I use that with the TV box?

(Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask)

Android box (TX9 pro) question

Would anyone have an idea for a solution about a particular minor issue that I experience each time I power on my device?

I always power off my device each night. Whenever I turn the device back on next my device downloads really really slow! Like 1Mb slow where normally it downloads at 50Mb. (50Mbps is what I pay for)

My fix is each time I power up my device I simply select "restart" from power options immediately. After I restart the device it will then download at 50Mb and everything will run normal.

This issue is only on this device. Example being when I run a speed test and this device is running slow, I can run the same speed test on my desktop PC and it will be at normal.

Would anybody have any idea why this happens and also a solution for the device to have the proper download speed upon the initial start up as opposed to a restart?

Thanks!

Edit: The device is connected via ethernet wire.

Alexa Voice Remote (2nd Generation), looks like it may be a no-go for ATV

Looking like this won't be a suitable alternative remote for Android TV. According to this page you need a Fire TV to configure the volume and power controls:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=G47P2QLV6DKLKA6P

Also seems to confirm it uses IR. I guess you could use a Fire TV to do the initial config, maybe. Or maybe we will luck out and the volume and power commands we be default Android commands and not IR out of the box.

Any suggestions for entertainment setup using torrents?

Is there any setup that I can do on my Android TV to perhaps connect to a server and let me watch the videos I downloaded from torrents or other sources? I can add the torrents from phone or PC and it should automatically pickup from the server. Any ideas?

Update: I have installed plex & kodi on my Android TV. I want to have my RPi/OPi running debian based distro as my Plex server but I'm unable to find the plex package from official sources.

Returning the Mi Box for a new one on MM build?

I'm contemplating returning my Mi Box which is currently on Oreo, and all the bugs that come with it, for a new one which ships with the alot more stable, MM build. Then keeping it on the MM build, until (if) a new oreo update comes out that for sure fixes all bugs.

I'm asking if it's wise to go ahead and do this, since i have no idea if Xiaomi pushes a firmware update tomorrow that fixes all current bugs, or if it's simply abandoned by now. I really don't know their intentions.

But it would be a shame if i exchanged my Mi Box, and a new update is released a week or two after, that fixes everything.

Before you say it, i'm already on 2179 build. I've tested all builds, and i've done countless of factory resets. It's meaningless, since this is most likely an underlying kernel issue, and not dependant on whether i'm on this or that build.

Any thoughts on this?

EDIT: E-mailed the store where i purchased my Mi Box from, and they told me that software is not covered by warranty, so they wouldn't let me exchange mine for a new unit that's on Android 6.0. One would think otherwise, since a device that is riddled with bugs, can not really function as advertised. They also told me that, based on the information they could get, an 8.1 update is coming. But that, we already kinda figured out by now. What we don't know is, if that update is released tomorrow or in 9 months. Hopefully sooner rather than later.
