Some small issues with my Phillips 55PUS7303

Hi, I hope this is the right sub. I have a Phillips 55PUS7303 that runs Android TV, built in.

I mostly use the built in chromecast functionality, and it's great and stable, but I have some small issues, that could be related.

  1. I can set the name of the TV in android TV's settings. But after it's been off for a short while (standby button on the remote), the name resets to the default. It's an ugly name and I'd like to keep it as "Living Room".

  2. The built in chromecast is visible on my network for about 3 minutes on my network. After than, it seems to disappear, I'm guessing the TV is going into a deeper sleep than standby, and turning off wifi or something. I like the wake functionality of the chromecast, so I'd like it to always be available.

  3. I really like the chromecast backdrops, and I can enable them on the TV, but they'll kick in even when I'm watching something on the HDMI port, I had to disable it because it really gets in the way of playing games when the backdrop suddenly starts showing.

I'm guessing at least points 1 and 2 are due to the TV shutting off, and not having a built-in battery, so losing settings. But I couldn't find an option to stop it doing that. Is there anyone with a similar model or similar issues who can help?

Thanks

EDIT

I think I've fixed points 1 and 2! There's a setting in wifi called "Enable wake on wifi", and when you check that, another setting called "Wake TV with chromecast". I set those, set my name back to Living Room, and so far, it seems not to have gone away.

I'd never thought to look in there, because firstly, who puts standby options in wifi? And secondly, I don't actually use Wifi, I use wired ethernet because I stream 4k content

EDIT2

So my apparent fix has't worked. I've gone through every setting on my TV and I can't see anything that'll be causing this.

Are there any apps/programs that can run a TV like schedule for my android TV?

So I am in an area that recently converted to Digital transmission so there are about 3 oTA channels in the city. As a result I have wanted to avoid paying for cable.

I often buy a season of TV shows on google play, and we have netflix, and appearantly prime video because of prime. Is it possible to have an app that you can make a TV schedule so that on Monday night it would play Series A followed by Series B followed by series C, but on Tuesday if you start watching it would be Series D,E, and F one episode at a time?

I'd like to be able to pick a few series but then not just binge only one show for a while? I'd also like to not have to dig through all the menus of the different channels.

Need an advice in Turning my Basic TV to a "SMART" one.

Since the Mi Box can't be powered by the USB port in my TV I am now down to two choices, the google Chromecast, and the Roku Streaming Stick plus, my question is can I play local content in my phone on either of those devices? For example: I have a movie in my phone, can I play it in Chromcast? The same goes with Roku? I'm eyeing chromecast cause it's more affordable than Roku, but Roku supports 4k without the need of a power adapter, your inputs are much appreciated.

Remote App for Nvidia Shield

Hi, anybody out there with experience of a reliable way to steer Nvidia Shiled via phone App - INCLUDING full 'mouse' functionality.

I am using Nvidia native Android App that provides a touchpad working well as a mouse - but the keyboard feature does not work, and the connectivity is not reliable.

The native Android TV connects well but and the keyboard works - but the 'touchpad' mode does not provide mouse functionality.....

Thanks for help

Question About YouTube TV on ATV

I am doing a YouTube TV trial right now and possibly switching to it from PS Vue. I use a Shield and Mi Boxes in my house on all of the TVs. Vue has a feature in the settings to stop the stream after so many hours of inactivity. I haven't found any such setting in the YouTube TV app. Does any one know if the YouTube TV app will continue to use data while the Mi Box or Shield sleep if the app is not exited prior to the device going to sleep?

This item fixed my Mi Box 5.1 audio problems

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074HHSJVN/

It was either buy this or buy a new receiver that can process HDMI audio. I went with this option.

I'm a Mi Box user with the TOSLink cable going to my receiver since my receiver is older and can't process audio through HDMI. When Oreo hit, Thanks to the "always" option in the sound settings, I suddenly had 5.1 audio for AC3 and DTS tracks work for me. It was great. Then when the most recent patch hit (the one from couple weeks ago), I lost all 5.1 digital audio thanks to Xiaomi removing the "always" option in the sound settings. The always option forced 5.1 audio passthrough regardless of handshake. So I was back to 2.0 stereo with everything (mainly plex) and had to turn PCM audio on to even get audio to work.

With that device I bought, now I'm back to having 5.1 audio on AC3 and DTS tracks in Plex and HDHomeRun channels. I have Dynamic Range Control set to "None", Sound output set to "Auto", and DTS set to 20%.

There are still some issues with this setup:

  • EAC3 audio doesn't work. It doesn't convert to dolby digital like it should. Since the TOSlink cable doesn't support EAC3, you hear nothing. Plex thinks you can process it so it doesn't convert it for you either.

  • The Amazon Prime sideloaded app (v4.7.17) no audio for 5.1 content. 2.0 stereo content still works though.

  • AAC 5.1 audio is missing the center and rear left/right channels. I just convert my stuff to AC3 using Xmedia Recode. AAC 2.0 still works though. I suspect Xiaomi knows about this and hopefully will fix it in a future update.

  • I don't have an active Netflix sub so I can't test that. I don't have Kodi either.

A question about the Mi Box.

I'm planning on buying the latest version of Mi Box and I'm wondering if there is a way to power it via the USB port in my TV. I know there are cables like the one on the PSP to connect to the Mi Box, but I'm wondering if a USB port in the TV could power it, has anyone tried this already?

Bluetooth earphones doesn’t work on MiBox

I tried pairing my Bluetooth earphones to Mibox, when it pair successfully; internet doesn’t work until I disconnect my earphones. Also i am unable to access tv remote via remote app on my iPhone when paired my earphones.

Bluetooth remote does work fine which came in package. Earphones works smoothly on my phone.

I’ve updated to oreo build 2303. Anyone else experience same issue? Or any suggestions on this?

Not using original remote. What are my options for voice search?

Number 1 requirement: has to be wife/kids friendly (so no "app on phone" solutions).

I am not using the original MiBox remote cause I have Harmony remote (Home Hub). Obviously no mic, and therefore no voice search/assistant on the MiBox.

I have a Google Home right next to it, Unfortunately I don't know of any way of using that as a mic for the MiBox (I know I have limited proxy control from GH to MiBox, but that's insufficient).

So what are my other options? An always on webcam connected to MiBox? Can anyone recommend a specific one that's actually confirmed to work with MiBoX? Does it pick up voice clear enough across the room to do a voice search?

I'd really prefer another universal remote (to replace Harmony) that would have an in-built BT mic that would be able to pick up voice.

Thanks

Mibox Bluetooth audio affecting WiFi speed.

When using a Bluetooth speaker with my Mibox, my WiFi speed drops and videos become unwatchable with buffering and disconnects. With the speaker unpaired, I’m a solid 20 Mbps, with it paired I’m at 6mbps with occasional drops. Oddly, the upload speed seems to not change.

Is there an Android tv setting which will allow me to tell it to stop doing whatever it’s trying to do?

Brand new MX10 no audio at all

I just got an MX10 Android TV box running Oreo, using the hdmi for picture and trying to use spidif for audio. I can select automatic or spidif in the options, neither produces any sound, and just to test I've also hooked up 3.5mm out going from the TV (well, monitor). I've made sure the device volume is up, and obviously have checked the hifi side is working. Just got no idea what to do, have watched a couple of YouTube vids but mostly they aren't specific to Oreo. I've also tried a full reset.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

Edit: ok I now have some sound. Of I remove the spidif cable then the hdmi > 3.5mm audio works! Not ideal though, I pretty much chose this box because it has spidif out. Any ideas how I could get that working?

Youtube alternatives (Newpipe and Smart Youtube TV)

Hi All.

a bit tired of the lack of customisation on the Youtube app. so I tried Newpipe.

interface is really for mobiles, and you have to manually go and play after you've selected a video. Also, it does, not have a leanback icon (no biggie)

Smart Youtube TV, it seems to open the Youtube app!?!?

what am I missing? Any suggestions on how to make these work properly, or other players?

MDZ-16-AB pulling up touch GBoard keyboard instead of regular one. I can't type with the remote

Hey all,

Struggling with my one week old Mibox. Initially the keyboard worked great, but now, on apps that use the native keyboard for searching (like Twitch and the Android Market) the OS pulls what looks like a regular cellphone touch keyboard. This keyboard is not operable with the remote and the layout resembles more what you find on your cellphone than the regular TV keyboard that used to appear.

I have not sideloaded any additional keyboards. It's the native GBoard keyboard.

Do I really need to bother about poor review of Android TV UI in my planned Sony TV purchase?

I am planning to buy Sony LED TV. Online reviews summarises that WebOS in LG is user friendly, fast responding and well laid out UI than slow responding and poorly laid out Android TV UI. Does it make sense to r/AndroidTV? Do I really need to worry about while buying my next Sony TV? I perfectly understood that picture quality decides TV purchase, but I would like to know Android TV's experience will frustrate me beyond an extent?

External storage backup methods?

I’ve recently added an external hdd to my NVidia Shield, and now I’m becoming paranoid that if it goes bad, I lose all my stuff. I wasn’t worried until I started reading about others who have had it happen to them. So what’s a good backup strategy for this? As I understand it’s encrypted so - what methods are available? Is there an app that can sync the drive contents with a OneDrive account or anything, even if it’s in an encrypted backup file format of some sort?
