Android TV device doesn’t have “Display” option in settings

Hello, just bought a smart TV (AndroidTV 6). Instead of “Display” in settings, it has “Inputs”. Is there any way I can get back the “Display” option turned on again?

Cheapest box to play movies with multiple codecs in .mkv and .MP4 from a portable hard drive.

Basically my neighbour is a bit old and technophobic and I've been sorting some movies and TV shows out for him to watch. Only thing is his TV will only play certain things, and usually nothing in .mkv or .MP4 will play. I'm guessing it's modern codecs that it struggles with.

So I'm looking for a cheap box I can get, under 50 quid if possible, so that I can just download the movies for him, put them on a hard drive and all he has to do is plug and play.

Any idea what the cheapest box with widest compatibility would be?

[for italians] Was anyone able to install Dplay on Android TV?

Reading on the Dplay website, they say it's "now compatible with Smart TV, Android TV and Apple TV!" Yuppy!

Unfortunately when I go to the Play Store it says it's not compatible with any of my devices (I have a Shield TV).

I tried to sideload it, downloading the latest APK from apkpure, but it installs the mobile version that crashes as soon is launched.

Was anyone able to install it on Android TV and get it working?

Anyone mess with the Mecool M8S PRO L 4K yet? Running AndroidTV

I just ordered one off of eBay, so if anyone is interested I can provide some impressions compared to the SHIELD. I've messed with the Cheap Chinese Boxes Running Tablet Android (TM) and definitely not impressive at all, but I'd like to see if this would be a better fit for the unwashed masses out there (who frankly don't need the power of the SHIELD like us enthusiasts do).

Sony Android TV (x900e) Strange network issues

For whatever reason, if the TV goes into sleep mode, the ethernet connection won't 'wake up' until I turn on the wifi, even though no networks are configured for the wifi.

It's repeatable, happens every time and was driving me crazy until I figured out it was some kind of bug. Anyone else seeing this?

Any chance a new Nvidia Shield TV release in 2018?

I bought my Nvidia Shield TV in 2015 when it came out and while not manufactured by Google, it is certainly updated very frequently by Nvidia.

As anyone with the Nvidia Shield knows, it was made way more powerful than anything on the market in 2015, hence only now (2018) would I think the specifications of other streaming TV boxes come close...

Of late I have been having issues with my remotes/controllers and also (while watching turbo - that animated movie , on Vudu) the device made a weird noise and locked up hard (had to disconnect power), there are a few other things that tend to crash it, but not very often. That said, I am considering moving the existing box to my basement and getting another Nvidia Shield for my family room. Should I get a 2017 Shield or does anyone know if a new version of the Shield TV will be out in 2018 (hope launched made as future proofed as the 2015 version)?

Disabling 'All Channels' tab in Live Channels app

Hey does anyone know how to disable grouping in the Live Channels Tab? Whenever I open the app, it initially opens the sub-menu for groups, with 'All Channels' as the only option. I'd like to get rid of that and go straight to the full EPG. It did that initially, so I don't know how/when this happened.

Both Mibox Units have gone to hell simultaneously

Hey All,

I noticed some issues with both of my Mibox units over the last few days, and it all seems to stem from upgrading my wifi.

I found a deal on an Eero WiFi setup that I could not pass up and replaced my aging Linksys router a few weeks ago. Everything seemed to work great immediately after the upgrade. Since then I have also added in some Vizio wifi speakers to the house as well.

I turned on one of my Mibox units the other day and noticed it running very slow when loading any apps. Anything that required an internet connection runs very sluggishly. I chalked it up to that device being slow, but when I tried I the other Mibox a day later it is having the same exact issues.

I have tried calling Eero to have them take a look at my network, resetting everything having to do with wifi in the house, and doing a factory reset on one of my Miboxs. Nothing has worked.

My Shield, that I use 95% of the time, has no issues whatsoever.

Can anyone help me out with some ideas as to what may be causing this?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: If you use Eero and see issues with your Mibox units, be sure to turn off IPv6 in your Eero settings. Thanks for the help everyone!

Trick to getting the HBOGo to work on Nvidia Shield TV when your provider isn't listed.

I have a HBOGo subscription through my cable provider. When trying to link the account with the Nvidia Shield TV the provider is not listed, just mostly colleges.

Anyway, when I went through the activation I just selected "Samsung Smart TV" and put in the code. HBOGo activated on the Shield without issue and now can access the app right through the Shield instead of having to use my phone to cast.

Probably something a lot of you know already, but figured I'd share.

How do you test 4k 60fps playback?

How do you test your setup to make sure it plays 4k 60fps? Tbh, I don't think I can trust my own eyes to make an objective judgement. I think I have the right HDMI cable and TV, but not sure about the android tv box.

I haven't bought one yet. After watching some of the youtube reviews, I'm not sure which one that is actually capable of doing 4k 60fps. I am hoping that I could find a box that has an SPDIF connector. If not, then I guess I need to update my receiver.

Just got a Nvidia Shield and having some issues w/ Google Home voice commands

Just bought the Nvidia Shield TV and loving it thus far. The interface and customization is top notch. I'm having some small issues however, things that worked when I was only utilizing my Chromecast Ultra w/ Google Home.

  1. It wont cast movies via Google Home voice from Google Play Movies and TV like the Chromecast did. It acknowledges the command, the screen changes showing the Google Play Movies and TV logo but then nothing happens. A few seconds later I get an error messaging from Google Home saying "I'm sorry, something went wrong. Please try again in a few moments." But the issue continues.
  2. It won't power-on the TV via my voice w/ Google Home. It will power it off just fine with a voice command. This is a minor grip.
  3. Again, another minor grip. All commands need for me to now explain to Google Home the enter device. Like for example I used to be able to simply say "Play XYZ video on YouTube" and it would come right up on the TV. Now, since getting the Shield I have to "..on Living Room TV" as the Google Home will say it needs to know which device to use. We also have a Chromecast on the upstairs Bedroom with a separate Google Home there. We never had to be specific with the commands previously. The one upstairs knew I was talking about the upstairs TV and vice versa with the downstairs TV.

Any feedback or solutions? Also looking for a way to sideload apps not available on the Google Play Store on the device. For example, NBC Sports Gold. Will I just have to cast that from my phone when I want to use it or is there a trick to get the app on the TV?
Any solutions, advice is greatly appreciated!

Android TV apps vs Roku apps

I'm a bit disconcerted at the state of a lot of Android TV apps compared to Roku.

Crunchyroll: My session keeps expiring on Android TV forcing me to relog in, rather than saving my credentials. Meanwhile on the Roku version everything works.

Tablo: Scheduling on Android TV is by time and channel number not the actual name of the show. It does NOT work exactly great. Meanwhile on the Roku version you navigate to the show and schedule it.

Google Play Store: Roku allows you to use a pin, whereas Android TV requires you to enter in your entire password. And if you are like me and are using a fairly long password with some basic security features placed in it, you aren't going to enter that password in fast.

Other than voice search for Android TV, I'm not sure what Googles end game is, but the apps on it aren't exactly great and feel rushed and left as abandonware.

android tv & xiaomi mi box 4k + problems and suggestions on what to do [kinda a rant]

Oh boy, what an ugly experience buying this xiaomi mi box 4k (79€) has been. Some of the problems are related to the device itself, some to android tv in general.

I want to explain the situation and get some feedback if what i am experiencing is the "normal" adroid tv experience, because if so I will immediately return this and get either an apple tv or a roku.

My idea was to entirely replace my chromecast with a set top box, to have a remote + enjoy other apps too.

My experience: A) the xiaomi mi box has big problems with color inversion on some TVs including mine, you can read more about it here https://xiaomi.eu/community/threads/mi-box-4k-mdz-16-ab-color-inversion-with-philips-sony-tv-sets.41145/ See also https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/86374m/xiaomi_mi_box_doesnt_have_the_option_to_force_rgb/ This is a problem of some older sony and philips tv, xiaomi could fix it with a couple of lines of code (to force rgb) but refuses to do it or at least provide an explanation on why they don't want to fix it. My only chance now is to try with an hdmi splitter i have at home, i'm quite hopeless though B) The Android tv experience in general has some hickups: B1) the non removable recommended section only shows garbage (buzzfeet and other terrible content like that) (you can remove all recommended sources but not the section). It seems to work well only for plex, but youtube shows things absolutely unrelated to your subscription feed or taste in general. B2) the home interface is barely customizable, you cant remove google apps you dont care about. B3) youtube app is especially bad, you can start a video, exit to the main menu, go back in but the app reloads from zero. You will lose the video you were watching as well as progress. How can the youtube experience be this bad on ANDROID tv!? Furthermore, if you leave the app you will see the video that you were watching appear for a split second in the recommended section to pick it up again, but it will immediately disappear. This happens both if youtube is enabled and disabled in the recommendation in the home. C) inconsistent behaviour of reproduction: C1) netflix: click central button play/pause immediately C2) youtube&plex: need to click once to get reproduction panel, click again to pause/play D) search is a let down, kinda works like you want but you are still required to click at least 3/4 times from search to reproduction. E) google home can't launch netflix programs, it does work with youtube though. F) can't force audio output to stereo. This is a problem only in netflix, where it will try always to play the 5.1 track and then i lose control over the volume with the remote and have to use the tv remote. Why does it think i have 5.1? no clue, there's no home theatre... easy fix would be to have the option in the audio setting, except it's not there. G) Turning on my tv with cec works sometimes, turning off never. (this could also be the tv, but my playstation always works fine) H) cast from my phone is also hit or miss I) at least twice yesterday the box got really hot and video started lagging in youtube (off sync audio/video) J) general stuttering, occasional lag

Some problems in this list are of the xiaomi mi box, some problems in this list are of my tv, some problems in this list are of android tv.

The tv has to stay, no way I replace an entire tv for a stupid box not supporting the enforcement of rgb.

I'm really liking some things of android tv, especially kodi and some other apps to watch live tv like eurosport and the public television one of my origin country. I also like the remote, I've used the apple tv one in an apple store and it is so fucking not ergonomical! Another obvious problem of the apple tv is the absence of google cast, so i will need to keep my chromecast there. Hopefully, as the apple tv remote has an IR blaster, I could be able to play/pause the chromecast. What could also happen is that because of hdmi cec hitting pause/play will switch input to the apple tv.

Bottom line: I like the idea, but the implementation really seems to have lots of problems. Is it xiaomi? Do you have to spend hundreds of euros on a more expensive device like a SHIELD to get a proper experience? How can google recommend this device at all? How can be youtube experience so frustrating on an OS made by them? How is it possible that the youtube experience is better on the apple tv??? Furthermore, is it worth to invest in an ecosystem where major players like netflix do not support their apps properly (like with the google home situation).

I'm looking to something like a solution to rule them all, something below 170€, don't care about 4k, integration of cast is welcomed, does not have the problem of the mi box, does not immediately close apps like youtube and lets you resume from where you left off

PS I already expect quite some hateful comments, so let's try to keep it civilised here :)

Shield TV, versus the new Echo Tv from Amazon, vs Chromecast on a TV that already has Roku.

I have some questions that I not sure if this is the right place to ask but here goes. First would one of these box sets work on a Roku TV TV? I assume you would plug it into an input and you could select that input from the TV Roku menu like any other input? Second is The Shield TV got anything over a Chromecast or the new Amazon Fire TV box that just came out? And vice-versa amongst those three?

Does the Chromecast still have to accept streaming from a computer or phone or cannot pull content down over your internet on its own? Does the Fire TV have content that anybody wants? Can you play games on either one of those? Like you can on the Nvidia Shield?

I'm a little lost on all this so any information would really be that nice. Especially if you can point me in the direction of like reliable research on these items. Thank you.
