Looking for an optical adapter for the Shield

I bought a second shield for my den, but completely forgot that the Shield does not have an optical audio port. The room has an older TV and older soundbar. The TV does not have an optical out port and the soundbar does not support hdmi.

Our Shields do not have an optical audio port but they do have two USB ports that can deliver optical audio using an adapter. nVidia natively supports the Turtle Beach Audio Advantage Micro II USB Analog & Digital Audio Adapter, but I can't find it for sale anywhere.

Has anyone found a decent alternative?

YouTube defaults to 360p on MiBox

We had to get a new modem(spectrum Arris) a few days ago. Ever since YouTube is sluggish and defaults to 360p. If I force it to 1080 it does fine immediately. Curious if there's a work around to get things straightened back out.

[How-to] My Android TV Box system

If you’ve bought an Android box like I did, or really any other streaming device, you’ll already know one important thing.

They don’t come with a manual.

They might…IF YOU’RE LUCKY come with a little leaflet that explains where to put the cables, but that’s usually it. It’s the same thing if you have a PC. It’s easy to find someone who’ll sell it to you, but it’s up to you to figure out how to use it on your own.

Consider this your Android TV Box setup instruction manual.

Step 1 - How to hook it up

This is the fun part. Ripping open the box and hooking everything up.

Really, I love this part. This is where you’re still excited about getting cutting the cord and getting a new toy.

So let’s go over really briefly how to hook up your new Android box or streaming device.

It’s only two connections really – three in some cases. First is the HDMI cable. There’s usually one in the box. If not, you can find one on Amazon. Don’t get fooled into buying some super expensive, shielded HDMI cable with gold plated connectors for $50 or $100. Just stop.

Find the Amazon Basics cable for however long you need it and you’re done. You shouldn’t pay more than $1 per foot for the cable. If you have a lot of corners that you have to squeeze around or an angry cat that likes to chew wires, then and only then opt for a braided cable. Otherwise, cheap is good.

Second is the Ethernet cable. This one is optional. You can go wireless and that’s OK. Ethernet is faster and if you’re going to be streaming 4K, then you need all the speed (bandwidth) you can get. If you have the option, go wired Ethernet. If that’s not an option, you can still go wireless.

Personally, I like to get a flat ribbon Ethernet cable. They take up less space and you can hide them easier. There’s no difference in performance. As long as you go with at least Cat 5e, then you’ve essentially future-proofed your wiring.

The final connection is the easy one. Power. Find an outlet and plug it in. Just don’t overload your power strip and set the house on fire.

Step 2 - Choose your network

Before you can do anything else, you need to connect to the Internet. Some manufacturers make you chose how you’re connecting the device before you even get to the home screen. If I’m being honest, I think that’s the way to go and more manufacturers should do it that way.

If yours doesn’t, then you’re going to need to do it manually.

Head on over to the Settings screen and click on Network. From there you’ll be able to turn on Ethernet or Wi-Fi and select your network.

Step 3 - Add your Google account

Once you’ve hit the power button for the first time, the first thing you should do is enter in your Google account.

Why?

This starts the process of updating any preinstalled apps and syncing any data you want to have follow you from device to device.

For those of you that are super-protective of your privacy and don’t want any of your data on your Android box, that’s OK too. Just create a different Google account specifically for this box. You’re going to need to do this to download any apps from the Google Play Store and get updates.

If you’re really dead-set against including any personal information on your device, you can skip this step and go straight to…

Step 4 - Install the Aptoide App Store

Aptoide TV is an alternative Android app store that has a ton of different apps to choose from.

Even if you mostly use the Google Play Store, Aptoide gives you access to a bunch of different apps that Google may not like. For example, if Google and Amazon are fighting (like they normally are), you might only be able to find some Amazon apps on Aptoide.

Either way, it gives you more options to choose from. Options are good, right?

Step 5 - Google Play apps

Now that the system updates are done, here comes the fun part.

Let’s get some apps.

You can install apps in both the Google Play Store or the Aptoide TV app store in much the same way.

No matter which one you decide to use, you should double check that your existing apps have all been updated. Hopefully we started the process earlier when you entered your Google account information, but let’s double check.

Android TV box setup next steps

So where do you go from here?

I deliberately didn’t mention anything about Kodi or Plex in this new version of my Android box Setup Guide. That’s a whole other setup guide, you can find many guides on Google, however I may update my post in the future to contain this information too.

Android TV vs Chromecast Ultra

I'm looking to buy a new TV soon and had a few questions about "cast-enabled" / "chromecast built-in" / Android TVs vs a separate Chromecast Ultra. Some TVs I was looking at were Sony Bravia TVs with Android TV and Vizio TVs with Smartcast.

Do the built in ones stream 4K with HDR? (assuming the TV is 4K with HDR) I know the Chromecast Ultra does for apps like Netflix and YouTube.

Do they work with Google Assistant ? (on phones / Google Home) I saw some posts about "play XXX on Netflix" not working on Android TVs, is this still the case?

Is there any performance issue with streaming on the TV / AndroidTV vs on a Chromecast Ultra?

Thanks for any help!

MKV H.265 Raw 4K Rip Playback Device Suggestions?

So I have an external hard drive formatted as exFat with a bunch of raw 4K Rips all in a .mkv format. I'm looking for a device that I could just hook my HDD up to and play them all from the hard drive. Preferably with a nice interface.

Any and all suggestions are highly appreciated!

UPDATE: I went with the Beelink GT1 Ultimate, excellent device that has been handling all my UHD raw rips that I throw at it. BUT! LibreELEC IS A MUST HAVE. Without LibreELEC, there's wayy less customization and there's a subtitle bug that causes dropped frames in the regular OS, LibreELEC fixes this.

Live TV CNN, Discovery Channel Free Streaming in Live Channels App

Does anyone have any suggestions for getting a way to have IPTV channels such as CNN, Discovery, Nat Geo etc to appear in the Live Channels guide on Android Tv. I know obviously you need to find a source of these channels using something like m3u lists, but not sure of where to find this and to make them work natively in Live Channels.

xiaomi Mi Box SPDIF

Hi Folks,

Im looking to add a second android TV box to the household, having had huge success with the nvidia shield.

I was looking atthe Mi box, but I'm confused as to whether this box has SPDIF out of just a 3.5mm stereo jack out.

Is it a dual function port, do i need any "special" cables to connect it to my ageing amp in the "cinema room".

Thanks for your help as always.

Live Channels incessantly spams the "Network Tuner Prompt"

I have three HDHomeRun tuners in my home - and regardless of whether I've used the HDHomeRun app integration or others like InstaTV - the Live channels app will interrupt netflix/plex/anything that's currently running with a bright blue Network Tuner setup prompt.

The prompt cannot be completed - moving your way through the options eventually exits/fails out. When leaving the ShieldTV in standby these prompts will actually queue up - so cancelling one will just re-open it again until you've worked your way through them all. You have to dismiss the Live Channels app in order to keep the prompts from returning.

The Network tuner feature was in beta for a while but I don't see it in my channel sources, so I cannot use the native integration.

It's killing me slowly. I'm on Oreo now and I'm assuming I cannot revert my Live Channels to the oldest version that didn't have this issue.

Once Plex has the grid view on the AndroidTV app I'll probably say goodbye to Live Channels if this doesn't get fixed.

Anyone know of anything?

New Hisense TV's with Android TV built in, and a custom World Cup app. Can anyone pull the app?

https://www.androidpolice.com/2018/06/12/hisense-h9-plus-4k-tvs-android-tv-now-available/

New Hisense TV's are releasing and they have a custom Fox Sports app for the World Cup that airs the matches in 4k (I believe), anyone with one of these TV's able to pull this app?

WORKING VERSION See update in post.

Thanks to /u/whatpens for extracting the app and compiling a patched version. I installed in on my shield and it works great. The only small problem (really not a problem at all) is if you close the app, then re-open, you will likely get an "unauthorized error". Clearing data and re-activating works though so not a big deal. You do need some sort of cable/satellite/streaming provider to activate the app with. I have YoutubeTV. Sling works, as does Fubo TV, PS Vue, DTV Now, and others.

If this has helped anyone, please consider donating to /u/whatpens as this is pretty massive in terms of watching the matches in 4k in the US.

Mibox - Steam Link

Steam Link app for android has been out for sometime now. I just tried it, but could not connect to my host pc with my mibox for some reason. Whenever I try connecting to my pc with it, mibox throws me back to steam link menu while starting big picture mode on the pc. The same setup works with my android phone. (Gamestream via mibox also works.)

Did anyone else try?

Edit: If anyone ends up here via a search engine, Factory resetting my mibox worked, I can finally use steam link now. I must admit I hate setting up apps all over again.

Android TV device seemingly disappearing from Google-linked devices

My Android TV (Sony Bravia) seems to have quite randomly unlinked with my Google account. I'm logged in on the tv with my account, but the TV no longer shows up in my Google Play device list. The biggest clue is that Google Play Music stopped working and displayed a toast message about a maximum of 10 devices per library, even though I don't use anywhere near 10.

Anyone had this happen to them? Seems like quite a bizarre error.
