Caller ID / MSG pop up for ATV

Anyone know of or seen an app that will show caller ID info and possibly text messages in a overlay window? I like to try to keep my phone on the charger to not be distracted by it when actually sitting down to watch a movie...the temptation is always there to pick it up and check email quickly but then you end up on imgur or eBay or googling something lol. It would be nice to be able to just leave the phone somewhere else but not miss say a call from work. So for example I'm sitting watching something and a call comes in, a small notification window would pop up showing the number on my TV over top of the movie I'm watching. Or possibly even a small preview of an incoming text message (why they text in an emergency situation at work I have no idea.... But they do)

Is there a browser for ATV that works with the Android TV Remote App?

I don't have a keyboard hooked up to my Android TV but I would like to surf the web or play videos on apps that aren't on the Android TV. Can you control it for my phone in the Android TV app?

Google home still can't launch apps on my Android TV devices.

I have both a shield TV and a Sony Android TV and when I say listen to Spotify or watch Netflix on either device she starts to try and then states something went wrong. This is super annoying. Any fix?

Ideal service for streaming within local network

I currently use a NexusPlayer for my TV for online streaming like Netflix, HBO, Youtube, and Kodi with some plugins. I have some media content: Some movies, home videos that I used to store on a PC and backed up on an HDD.

I tried to setup a samba server with a raspberrypi3 connected a separate HDD formatted and moved some data to it. I've been able to access it after setting up a samba server and using Kodi to view content. However, I'm feeling after the latest updates to Android and probably the device is a little choked up. Sometimes, videos stutter and occasionally I've had Kodi also crash. Frustrated, I did a factory reset and reinstalled minimal apps and tried Kodi again and its not much better. While I know the device is probably underpowered and being x86 there is less support. However, I would like to extract more out of it rather than moving to a new box.

I was wondering if there is a better service I can use to do this local streaming. I see plex needs license and also needs a re-install on the rpi, so I don't want to go that route. I also saw emby as a service, but I am not that handy on linux and I don't want to try out multiple things on my build and have to deal with purging it all out due to my stupidity. What is the best service to use for this kind of local streaming within the home network server side unix (rpi based) and client side on the androidTV.

I'm fairly new to this, and have been trying out a couple of things, but please be gentle.

Thank you!

USB3 to Gigabit Ethernet on Philips Android TV

Hi all,

I just bought a new Philips TV with Android 7 (55PUS7272). I'm really satisfied sof far. The only thing that sucks is the 100mbit Ethernet Port. I've testetd the speed and I only get ~80mbit. I tried to stream a UHB Blu ray rip from Plex running on my PC and it worked pretty well with direct play. It just stopped a few times with a "poor network" error message. The movie has a bitrate of 55 mbit/s. My question is if a USB3 to Ethernet adapter will do the job. The comments say that this model will work on a mii android box so I hope it will also work on the Philips. I know you guys like the shield box but I really don't want an extra box just for streaming movies. Is anyone here who uses an adapter like this or an other model on a Philips?

Thank you very much.

Amazon Echo or Google Home? to control Shield Android TV with Harmony Hub

I'm more invested into the Google eco system, however I've heard Amazon has a stronger skill set. But really I'd like to know which will do a better job of controlling Logitech Harmony Hub with NVIDIA Shield TV. Or should I forget the whole idea of voice controlling my TV and stick with the hard remote?

Nvidia ShieldTV and SmartThings issue

So I got my SmartThings link for the ShieldTV a couple days ago and everything worked great. Until today. All of a sudden the SmartThings app on the ShieldTV won't recognize the SmartThings link. The ShieldTV does because everytime I unplug and replug in the link, the SmartThings app launches but then proceeds to say it doesn't see the link. I've rebooted the ShieldTV, uninstalled and reinstalled the app, and same thing. Anyone else having this issue?

Am I really the only one who hates the new launcher?

I find myself actively avoiding my Nexus Player these days because it's such a pain to navigate. Am I really the only one who feels this way? Is there any way to force the old Leanback Launcher on to the new operating system? Or failing that a Launcher that acts like the old one used to behave?

Surely I'm not the only one, am I?

Is AndroidTV really worth it?

I have the Android TV Mi Box. I feel that while it is convenient in some ways, it is also limiting. The new Google Play Music app is worse than the regular Android one, and I think the same goes for Youtube. And the list goes longer. The Mi Box is also stuttering for me and I am tired of that. But if I buy Shield, it will still be Android TV. Can anyone give an objective comparison with other modern Android tv boxes that run regular Android. Are they really worse?

US folks: what cloud live TV service (Youtube TV, Hulu, Sling, etc) are you using, if any?

I bought an Nvidia Shield hoping I'd be able to jump on the bandwagon of these new cloud TV services, but I've been really disappointed at how few of them have Android TV apps, let alone pay attention to them.

It appears that neither YouTube TV nor Hulu have apps with their Live TV features included, so they're out immediately. It seems Playstation Vue and Sling do have live TV, so if anyone is using them I'd be interested to hear your experiences. Are there any others I've missed?

Overall I'm very disappointed with the platform for this reason alone. It might be a lot easier for me to just sell my Nvidia Shield and get a Chromecast instead, even though I hate everything being controlled by the phone.
