Best MP4/MKV Players for AndroidTV from USB Hard Drive?

I've got a Sony Android SmartTV being delivered soon. While I know I can use Sony's own media player to playback MP4/MKV videos from my USB hard drive, I was wondering what players from the Play store would do a better job? Can they take full advantage of the motion processing?

Thanks!

A slightly weird question: does anybody have the measurements of the power plug for the Shield TV?

I keep a power strip behind my tv, which is wallmounted. There is only a small amount of space behind the tv, so I need to know if I will be able to squeeze the power plug in behind my tv. From the pictures it looks rather large, but I just want to confirm the measurements with any of you who own it, and would be kind enough to measure it for me. Would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

Edit: for reference, this is the power plug I'm referring to

Youtube manual resolution selection removed?

Not sure if this has been addressed elsewhere but with the new update I can no longer choose what quality to watch a given video at so I can't force the video I'm watching to be displayed at the highest resolution. I have a 4K TV and the highest any vid will play at is 1080p.

Netflix 24p

I'm really sorry if there's an easy to find answer to my question somewhere. But I tried. For hours.

What android TV device supports smooth 24p Netflix playback? (except for the Nvidia shield...)

This is really all I want. I watch 99% Netflix and sometimes Amazon Video (for which I could still use my PS4 if I get some device that doesn't support Amazon).

What I've learned so far:

  • the Nvidia shield is pretty much unrivaled and is supposed to work perfectly. I just consider 300 bucks way to much just to watch Netflix.
  • I had the Fire TV stick, but when switched to 24p output Netflix it stutters every few seconds
  • the Xiaomi Mi Box had a lot of problems early on, but it might have gotten better since?
  • there are some cheap S905X devices that can run Kodi. And Kodi apparently has a new Netflix plugin. Is it usable yet?

Thank you so much for your help!

Any way to re-pair harmony hub bluetooth?

So I had my harmony hub paired to the Shield TV, and working great but rooted my Shield which required unlocking the bootloader. That erased all device settings/storage. So now my Harmony hub still thinks its paired but the Shield doesnt know anything about it. I tried adding a bluetooth device, but it doesnt do anything. I know i can delete the Shield from Harmony and set it up again as new device, but then I have to go thru the trouble of remapping all my keys, which I would like to avoid.

Anyone know how to force the harmony hub back into pairing mode?

Root Android TV of Sony to enable A2DP Bluetooth?

I am using Sony's 43x8300C TV, it uses Android TV it has bluetooth support. I often watch late night films that affect other people. So I bought a PBH-300 Bluetooth headset recently. I bring home the suspense turn on the TV and try to connect to it. But I received a disappointment from Sony, which is that most of Sony's Bravia does not support A2DP over Bluetooth. So almost bluetooth ear phones can not operate on Sony's Bravia. So I think we can root Android TV on Sony's Bravia to activate Bluetooth A2DP mode. According to everyone, is this feasible? Because I find Sony Bravia to integrate Bluetooth 4.0 to 4.2, hardware will definitely support A2DP.

Anyway to sleep external HDD on Nvidia Shield?

Im trying to use my Shield as a plex server, but its also located in my bedroom so I dont want it spinning 24/7. Ideally id want it to spin down and stay off after no activity, but id settle for scheduling it, or a lot of things. However even if I do manage to get it to sleep, something always wakes it (nobody is using the plex server either).

Any suggestions?

Selecting a profile on Hulu?

Is it possible to select a profile on Hulu on the Shield TV app? I use my brother's Hulu account, and while I have my own account for my girlfriend and I and can access it via a browser on my computer, I can't select it on my Shield TV. It defaults to his rather than mine, with no option to switch at all.

Anyone know?

Audio sync issue on Mi Box when playing from IPTV links.

I have a subscription to an IPTV service. I'm using Perfect Player with a URL list. Every so often the audio and video don't line up. Is there a setting on the Mi Box that needs to be adjusted or is the problem Perfect Player? My Mi box is connected via HDMI and no receiver or soundbar is being used.

I guess it can also be the service provider but when using the same service on PP on my Shield TV I don't get the same issue. Has anyone had the same issue? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Using Android TV outside US?

I'm seriously considering getting an Android TV (the Mi Box specifically) but I wanna ask, how well Android TV works outside the US media life support? Can you help me with this because this is my first media box, and help me get started. I'm on the Philippines btw

Could some media apps could be restricted? Also I wanna ask is most media apps on Android TV now supports PiP now, the floating video thing, like for YouTube or Spotify? Also is Chrome app now on Android TV now? You know sometimes you need it for livestreams on websites

How about Free TV OTA, does Android TV support this, via a USB dongle and wired to the antenna outside? Even both DTV & Analog? Because here in PH, we still haven't fully switched on DTV, we still on testing phases, and also Free TV is still important here as how a cable also important in the US too. We're willing to cut cords here as much as possible, but at sometimes I could see my mom much prefer what's on free TV, also TV networks here haven't jumped on streaming apps/subscription yet, so no livestreaming yet anywhere via internet, and in case internet's very slow so we have a fallback option.

Also can you help me find that right USB antenna dongle that will work for Android TVs. For both DTV ISDBT and Analog NTSC? Also the right app on Play Store that can do this? Could Plex or Kodi do this on their app, or even just Live Channels app will just do?

Also I wanna ask about camera, I was wondering if Android TV supports webcams via USB, so we could accept say videocalls Skype or Facebook Messenger. Also is chat apps on Android TV mostly support PiP now too. Also could you also help me find right and trustable good webcam accessory that will work for Android TVs, and will be right for a wide living room setup?

Lastly, I wanna ask, how long before updates being rolled out on Android TVs, I mean with Auto, Wear and TV right, it's very well controlled by Google right? Is it that bad too as how Android updates roll outs on phones, tablets too or I'll get Android Oreo much sooner? This ships with Android Marshmallow btw, is too Nougat update already on Mi Box already to those that have this too?

Sorry if I'm asking too much, I'm really new to media boxes. And thanks for the answers in advance

Does not support HDMI output

Hi, I have a Minix box for years and I like it, but it's getting old and started to behave weirdly. So I bought a Mi Box, which I like. but there is one problem.

I have a local TV app which doesn't allow output to HDMI (it is supposed to be used for mobile) It somehow worked in my old MINIX box, but in the new Mi Box, it says "does not support output to HDMI". I guess this is the supposed behavior, but is there any ways to get around that? Why didn't the app detect the MINIX box is outputting to a TV? Thanks a lot

MiBox + Kodi 18 alpha = ability to play high bitrate 4k files

I've been disappointed in the MiBox up into a few minutes ago with it's inability to handle 4k Bluray rips. Tried everything I could think of until installing the Kodi 18 Alpha today. Now I have the ability to play 4K UHD with HD Audio on my system. I thought it was just the MiBox being underpowered turns out it's software related after all. Who Knew?
