I'm looking for a box....

I'm after a box to run in my van. It has SD Screens at the moment, and a 100v/100w Japanese plug socket. I'm wanting a bluetooth remote so the box can be hidden away, and I'd like to run something like Kodi to access a USB hard drive, or a large capacity MicroSD card.

Gaming would be nice (emulators for example) and It would be nice to have Cast support (Mira/Chrome etc)

I've been looking at the Xiaomi Mi box, as it seems to tick a lot of boxes. Do any of these boxes work without an internet connection for local media?

Thanks!

Will shield play nice with Google Home

I got a google home for the holidays, and am a loyal shield user, with all the news about the shield, and google assitant, and the nvidia spots, and the smarthings hub feature, the shield is starting to look like a full solution for the home.

My question is, will the shield and the google home device realize that they are on the same team? when i say OK, Google, who takes the request? and will the GH understand that the shield picked up the request? If my TV is off, but the shield is still on and i want to play music, will the shield know to let the home play the music? if im playing a game on my shield and want to lisen to music on the GH speaker, will the shield know to ignore this request? Or will i have to specify everything "ok google, play spotify playlist on the living room google home" . i know you guys dont have all the answers, but just wanted to see if you think they will fight, or play nice with each other.

One other question, say i have a shield int he living room, and a nexus player in the bedroom, will a spot only report back to the shield, or would a spot in the bedroom know that it should send its requests to the nexus player?

The possibilities are endless, i think this really could make the smart connected house situation amazing, since its not just a TV device, and not just an audio assistant.

Mi Box ethernet USB adapter issue

Anyone have a brand of USB adapter that does not have problems or rarely has problems?

I bought belkin's for my two Mi Box's. 10/100 USB 2.0. They work great but every couple days I have to reboot the Mi Box because it goes back to WiFi. This happens on both box's.

On 5.2 Ghz WiFi, I sometimes get freezing or skipped frames. Yes I have full bars. Connection over 500 Mbps.

On ethernet I never have issues with freezing or dropped frames. It just works which is how I like it.

I figure there has to be a brand out there that is more compatible with this unit so it doesn't time out.

My Sling AirTV observations

Instead of posting these findings as comments on other posts, I'm going to start a new topic. Here you go.

It's an unremarkable device. It's huge, and it really does feel as cheap as it looks.

The Sling integration appears to be a Sling TV logo in the upper right hand corner of the home screen, a special Sling TV app and on startup Sling TV launches.

This is certainly not as slow as the Nexus Player, and I'd say it is on par with the Mi Box, maybe a bit snappier. I've only been using it for about 2 hours.

I'm not sorry I bought it and I'll be keeping it. I won't be buying another.

Edit: I got downvoted for sharing observations on a new device? Fuck you guys.

Installing Trakt add-on in Kodi

I'm a little confused trying to do this. The add-on is not in the Kodi Add-on repository on the Kodi on my Android TV but if I open it on my laptop it is there along with many others that don't show up on the TV. Anybody have any idea why this is? I've tried checking for updates on the repository but it says they're the same version on both devices. Maybe this is something that is known and I just hadn't experienced it yet. Thanks guys!

Bluetooth remotes with voice control

Both the new (Sling) AirTV and the new Nvidia Shield remotes feature a combination of a few things I haven't seen so far:

  1. Bluetooth (compatible with anything that uses BT, in theory)
  2. TV/Receiver/Soundbar control (via IR blaster)
  3. Voice control

AFAIK, it's been a "Pick 2 out of 3"-type of scenario up until now. Giving up voice control is the main reason I haven't switched from my OG Shield remote to a Logitech Harmony.

One of the things that excites me is being able to buy a remote that fits a particular use case. For example, I'll be perfectly happy with the new Shield TV remote. But I know my sister & her family would appreciate the transport controls on the AirTV remote -- which is a big reason I was considering recommending that to them over a Shield. But a Shield TV + AirTV remote might make the perfect marriage. Or, hell, the new FireTV remote might even work too!

Anyway, this One input- AND one remote- to rule them all business has me really excited. :)

Any apps to mirror a computer display at higher than 1080p?

I have a 4K Sony bravia with Marshmallow Android TV 6.0. I can mirror my macs display to the Bravia using an airplay app, in my case I bought AirReceiver (full version). Works fine but it's max res is 1080p. I want to be able to use the Bravia for displaying my desktop at full res 2500x1600 or 4K in order to use it as a digital whiteboard for meetings so don't care if it lags a bit. (not 4K movie playback)

Anyone know an AndroidTV app that can mirror a mac desktop at higher res than 1080p ?

Don't get a Mi Box -- too many reports of problems, and the support is terrible.

First of all, if you got a Mi Box and it's working fine, congratulations. You're one of the lucky ones. Now take a moment to search around here and in other forums and you'll find many of us who're facing the following issues:

  • Unexplained, random Wi-Fi drops

  • Unexplained, random remote disconnects

  • Frame drops on Netflix and Kodi

As for support, it's a complete joke. They've done nothing but replied telling me to do the default procecures (reset, reboot, etc), and once it didn't solve, they asked me to return the product to the source of purchase (which I would have already done, but I bought this from the US yet live abroad).

So, if I were you, I would not risk getting a Mi Box, even though it's cheap. You get what you pay for. Go for the Shield.

EDIT: If you're not able to notice frame drops that doesn't mean they aren't there. Some people just don't notice them. To those of us who do, it's a real, annoying problem. So, before you start accusing us of being "drama queens", consider for a second that maybe you're the one with an untrained eye and low quality standards.

EDIT2: We're not talking about the Mi Box lacking some features. We're talking about malfunction. It's a 2016 device that can't do something that a 2006 device - a WDTV Live Plus - could do without any problems. It can't play 1080p without frame drops! I mean no offense when I say that some of you simply don't notice the frame drops, but geez, what a bunch of narcissists taking everything personally.

Can the Mi Box do 4K h.264 and h.265 at 30 fps from a USB source without dropping any frames?

*Is this question inappropriate for this sub or something?

Maybe people only care about the streaming features of android tv devices?

For what it's worth, I bought the device and it plays 4K h.265 and h.264 at 30fps from USB devices without dropping any frames in standalone video players that have hardware acceleration. (MX Player is mostly what I used after I got some Bluetooth audio desync with VLC)

The menus are also smooth in all apps I've tried, even at 4K 60fps. My only only complaint about the device is that youtube drops some frames every 30 seconds or so at 1080p 60fps, even if the UI performance is very good even at 4K 60fps. 4K 30fps videos seems to play fine in youtube without dropping any frames.

Anyone find specs or info on the AirTV by Dish?

I have been scouring the internet looking for a bit more info on the AirTV because I'd be interested in seeing if it's got better hardware inside than the Mi Box which I find lacking. Or at least have a dedicated ethernet port or USB 3. Their website is really basic and doesn't even say when one would ship if it was ordered. I just pre-ordered a new shield for my main room but I wouldn't mind replacing the Mi Box in the bedroom with this if it was better.

Mi Box as Home Audio System Brains?

Hello, I just got a Mi Box and would like to set it up in a way that I can explore an mp3 collection on my TV and listen to it through a soundbar. I would obviously need to plug in an external Hard Drive, but would love it if it could draw power from the Mi Box and not make noise or have too many lights. Do you have any recommendations for hard drives/flash drives/etc that could work well in this situation? I ordered a 500GB SSD drive and it's on its way, but now i'm not sure if it was the right thing to purchase.

Also, are there any good Leanback music player apps that could read the files from the external drive? or am I stuck with having to use File Explorer apps?

Thanks!
