[ I have asked something similar a while ago on the dedicated Nexus TV subreddit (link) ]
I'm looking to by a device with Android TV to stream from my library of movies and tv-shows on my Synology NAS.
The media is h264 AVC encoded in an MKV or MP4 container with either AC3 or DTS audio. Some are 1080p, most are 720p with a framerate of 23.97
I have checked some Smart TV's, including the SONY KDL-55W805 CBAEP (which i like so far), but I don't know if it is fast enough or comes with the necessary codecs to play media from my library. Especially I have read that most of those Smart TV's come with weak hardware, which makes their menus sluggish and overall annoying to use.
As an alternative, I would consider buying a companion-device like the nVidia SHIELD, if the Android TV on those Smart TV's will not suffice.
Any advice or experiences from you guys is very welcome!
I recently bought the new Play:5 and tried to connect it to my TV using the 3.5mm audio jack. I am happy to report that there is virtually no delay and the audio quality is a HUGE boost compared to the TV speakers.
If your TV (or other streaming box) does not have a 3.5mm audio out, you can use an HDMI audio extractor and an RCA cable. I am using this setup with my Nvidia Shield TV and it works flawlessly.
I understand that this may not be the optimal AV setup for audiophiles, but it is a great alternative for many who may not want to spend on expensive AV systems.
I'm one of the Android TV and Tablo dual users. I know that Live Channel support is "on the roadmap" but I'm impatient, and really want to make this work so I can make it easier for my wife.
I found using the http://TABLOIP:18080/pvr/ and saw that a temp folder is opened for the live streams and the number appears to be unique for each channel.
Using VLC I am able to stream http://TABLOIP:18080/pvr/CHNO/pl/playlist.m3u8 and get the appropriate channel live.
Need help with the last step... Live Channel integration. Tried using Cumulus TV but just get a black screen. Not sure if it's an issue with being a local file, my system setup... etc. But this would be a great stopgap until Tablo figures this out.
Thanks!
Update: I spoke too quickly. The "link" above only works when the Tablo has the feed already selected, and then Cumulus will let it play in Live Channels, but will not change the channel for you. Hopefully there are those smarter than me that can help.
