Wake up TV on alarm clock

I'm looking at buying a Sony XBR43x830C. I was wondering if I can use it as an alarm clock where it'll automatically turn its self on and launch say Pandora at a set time in the morning?

Has anyone had any luck with Slingplayer?

I know that HD-Homerun is the way to go if I wanted to watch live TV on my shield but a second hand slingbox solo retails for around £12 ($17) and accepts component input (no TV tuner) streaming. I could also get a slingbox pro for £10 ($14) which features a TV tuner and HDMI streaming but isn't as widely supported. There are some much newer and more powerful models but they cost around the same as the HDH Connect And I'd rather go for that if I had to.

Both devices are several years old (2007 release) and have depreciated in value and support which makes me doubt how useful they'd be but for a budget build being substantially cheaper than the cheapest HD Homerun device are they worth a gamble?

Has anyone had any experience with slingboxes? do they work ok?

EDIT: Ok guys, it's ordered now & I'll set it up when I can. Thanks for all your help.

If I buy a Nexus Player, will it stop streaming when I turn off my CEC enabled TV?

Sorry for a double post, people jumping to conclusions instead of answer the question resulted in making a more complete post.

So if I am stream Hulu and set the sleep timer on my TV, when the TV turns off what does the Nexus Player do?

If I am streaming Hulu and turn my CEC enabled TV off, what does the Nexus Player do?

Will it pause, return to the home screen, or just keep on streaming?

I usually set the sleep timer on the TV and fall asleep to whatever I am watching. I don't want the Nexus Player to keep on streaming all night once the TV turns off.

FTP server that will run in the background?

Hey, I'm searching for a good way to easily manage my files on my nexus player. So far, an ftp server seems like the best way to go about that. The only problem is, I can't seem to find one that will constantly run in the background. Does anyone know of a way (or an app) that will allow me to do this? Thanks!

Smart TV or companion device (SHIELD) for streaming my movie/TV library from the NAS

[ I have asked something similar a while ago on the dedicated Nexus TV subreddit (link) ]

I'm looking to by a device with Android TV to stream from my library of movies and tv-shows on my Synology NAS.

The media is h264 AVC encoded in an MKV or MP4 container with either AC3 or DTS audio. Some are 1080p, most are 720p with a framerate of 23.97

I have checked some Smart TV's, including the SONY KDL-55W805 CBAEP (which i like so far), but I don't know if it is fast enough or comes with the necessary codecs to play media from my library. Especially I have read that most of those Smart TV's come with weak hardware, which makes their menus sluggish and overall annoying to use.

As an alternative, I would consider buying a companion-device like the nVidia SHIELD, if the Android TV on those Smart TV's will not suffice.

Any advice or experiences from you guys is very welcome!

Anyone else experiencing this. It barely lasts a song or two before giving up the ghost. Very frustrating.

Edit: clearing app data seems to have fixed it.

FuboTV support coming

I emailed the developers of the FuboTV app (live soccer streaming) about supporting Android TV. This was the answer:

Hi,

It is definitely in our plans to develop an app for Android TV devices. I haven't been given any set time frame on when that might be released though. But please check back with us :)

Thanks for checking out fuboTV! Please let me know if you have anymore questions for us. I'd be happy to answer them for you!

Kind regards, Viviana

For those of us who don't want to spend extra for soccer packages with Cable providers or SlingTV this looks like a good option (10 bucks a month)

Best sideloaded apps that work perfectly with AndroidTV?

I do not have many sideloaded apps currently, and the ones I've tried are finicky to say the least. Are there any apps or games that work great on AndroidTV, but need to be sideloaded?

What are some good live TV apps or Kodi add-ons?

I've been running Phoenix on Kodi for a bit, but it's naturally limited and goes down quite a bit. I know of Pluto which is okay, but I'd like to get a full set of live TV channels to switch to, if some channel like ESPN on Phoenix goes down. I don't really trust the lists I've seen on Google search results, since they're meh.

Using Play:5 with your TV [X-post from /r/sonos]

I recently bought the new Play:5 and tried to connect it to my TV using the 3.5mm audio jack. I am happy to report that there is virtually no delay and the audio quality is a HUGE boost compared to the TV speakers.

If your TV (or other streaming box) does not have a 3.5mm audio out, you can use an HDMI audio extractor and an RCA cable. I am using this setup with my Nvidia Shield TV and it works flawlessly.

I understand that this may not be the optimal AV setup for audiophiles, but it is a great alternative for many who may not want to spend on expensive AV systems.

TabloTV and Live Channels

I'm one of the Android TV and Tablo dual users. I know that Live Channel support is "on the roadmap" but I'm impatient, and really want to make this work so I can make it easier for my wife.

I found using the http://TABLOIP:18080/pvr/ and saw that a temp folder is opened for the live streams and the number appears to be unique for each channel.

Using VLC I am able to stream http://TABLOIP:18080/pvr/CHNO/pl/playlist.m3u8 and get the appropriate channel live.

Need help with the last step... Live Channel integration. Tried using Cumulus TV but just get a black screen. Not sure if it's an issue with being a local file, my system setup... etc. But this would be a great stopgap until Tablo figures this out.

Thanks!

Update: I spoke too quickly. The "link" above only works when the Tablo has the feed already selected, and then Cumulus will let it play in Live Channels, but will not change the channel for you. Hopefully there are those smarter than me that can help.

Questions about Razer Forge TV

I'm looking at the Razer Forge TV due to the $50 discount for Ouya owners. A few questions:

  1. How does it stack up to Nexus Player as a streaming box? I understand there's no remote? Will it recognize the Nexus Player's remote?

  2. Does the ROM/interface look similar to Nexus Player's, or significantly different?

  3. Does it have access to the stock android TV apps? The play store? Google Play movies?
