After a couple of weeks of research I bought a Mi Box last week. I was advised not to upgrade to Oreo because of the problems, but to update to build 1901.
I wanted to see how the system runs with the purchased firmware before I do anything.
I wanted an Android box for three reasons. I have a Plex media server machine with a DVB-S/S2 card so I use it for Plex, Kodi with TVheadend and YouTube.
YouTube did freeze all the time (I did update all the apps in the Play Store), sometimes waking up the device did not work and had some problems with HDMI-CEC ( Philips 32PFL4007H/12 ).
Yesterday I saw that my box was downloaded the Oreo update and only waits for a reboot to install it. I did read about before that there was some auto upgrades for some users. I want to know what and when is happening to my devices so I decided to upgrade.
The procedure was:
- Factory reset from settings (not in recovery)
- Setup the box for the first time
- Turn off auto-update in Play Store and remove the updates if did already
- Download upgrade in the settings (no USB drive attached)
- Reboot to install
- Factory reset from settings (not in recovery)
- Setup the box for the first time
I did install the updates in Play Store and turned off auto-update.
Kodi, Plex and YouTube works as it should. I did not have any issues with them. HDMI-CEC works great. With 2.4GHz Wi-Fi I had some dropouts so I changed to 5GHz and now everything is OK.
I thought, I should share my experience with people who may thinking about upgrade.
Also have to say that I did NOT tried Netflix, Hulu, RedBull TV... Only the mentioned apps I use.
