Questions about Steam Link on Sony Android TV

I have had a Sony Android TV (KDL-65W850C) for a few years now which has been great. Love the TV and had no issues with it. I’m not much of a gamer, but I recently heard about the Steam Link app being made available for Android TV and thought it might be time to dip my toe into PC gaming. My kids are getting a bit older now so they will probably get some enjoyment out of it too. I have a PC at home which I use for work (i7, 16GB, GTX970) which seems more than capable of gaming duties. Seems I have most of what I need to get up and running, My main questions were regarding controllers. I have an Xbox 360 with 3 wireless controllers. I understand that with a 360 Wireless Receiver I can use these controllers on a PC, but can I use these directly with the TV itself? A little reading around told me this was not easy, maybe even impossible; https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/6z5i0g/mi_box_and_wireless_xbox_360_controller/

Do my controllers have to interface directly with the PC running the games, or is with the TV OK? I ask because the PC that runs the games is up the other end of the house (ie. Nowhere near my TV). What are my options for this? Ideally I’d love to use my existing 360 controllers (with wireless receiver), saves me buying expensive new hardware if I don’t need to. Failing that, do I have to go out and buy PS4 controllers? I remember when I got the TV hearing that PS4 controllers can be connected to the TV directly. Assuming that having controllers connected to the TV (rather than to the PC), is that my best option? And how about a KB/mouse combo for playing games that require them like RTS games. Should I just get a basic combo with dongle via USB? Bluetooth?

Appreciate any input you guys can give me. Cheers.

UKTV, casting/screen mirroring

Hi,

I downloaded the UKTV Play app today and was dismayed to find out that I can't cast it onto my television. When I go through the Google Home app and just cast everything from my phone screen onto my television and then play the video it shows me my status bar and the timer/buffering bar at the bottom of the screen but the video only plays on my phone, not the television.

Is there an app that I can use to mirror everything onto my android TV?

Using Samsung S8+, Sony KD49XE8004, No chromecast or fire stick.

Thought I might share my positive Oreo experience

Before I begin, I should make it clear that I don't do many of the more 'advanced' features that many on this sub do. I don't watch 4k content, I don't (generally) do 5.1 and I don't do HDR or anything like that. I also flashed the Nougat beta onto my Mi Box as soon as I got it, so my experience is based on that transition

There are a lot of people here and on the Xiaomi forums that have been issues with Oreo, so I thought I might share my experience, now that its been out for a while.

TL;DR Its good, better performance and better interface (IMO).

Firstly, I was skeptical about the Oreo's interface, but I've grown to enjoy it. Luckily the two main apps I use (Plex and Netflix) both have excellent support for channels, meaning the home screen is far more productive than it was when it was just a simple app drawer.

I also noticed a big performance jump, (likely due to the improved processor firmware). Rather than it stuttering constantly when playing through video, it was now much smoother.

About the only 'issue' I have is the 'feature' which means you can't use USB debugging and a ethernet adapter at the same time, which is a pain for what I like to do.

Obviously this will not be representative of all Mi Box owners, but if someone only used HD video then it might be helpful.

Some videos wont play on my androidTV

Sorry for the noob question, I recently got my first Android TV (sony kd-49xf8505) and I'm having trouble reading some video files. Here are two examples:

  • My androidTV shuts down and restarts every time I try to read some .MKV files. It happens with 23 episodes of a TV show. Here are the informations about the encoding: "1080p 10bits AAC5.1 HEVC x265" I can read other MKV files just fine, but those make my AndroidTV crash every single time.

  • My AndroidTV is displaying green gibberish mosaic patterns when I try to watch a 43GB 4k video. Here are the informations about the encoding: "4K HDR10bits BT2020 DTS HD-MA VISIONPLUS HDR1000"

I initially thought that it was a network problem, that my bandwidth wasn't good enough... But other 4k videos run smoothly, and I've tried reading both the files with VLC, Kodi, casting to Chromecast, even reading them directly from an attached USB drive: the problems still happen.

Could someone help me find the cause of these problems ?

Thank you for your time!

Made Some Progress with Mibox

I've noticed a lot of people are having issues with their mibox, myself included. I reached out to customer service and explained the problems I was having. The initial response and followup email took some time, but within 5 business days I had a prepaid label in hand. They are sending me a new one once the old unit is received

I'll have to wait and see how the rest of this pans out

TCL Xess X2 U65X9006 USB File access

I just bought a TCL Xess X2 (U65X9006) which has Android v7 on it and I cant seem to find a way to access USB files without having to unplug and plug the USB back in to get into the USB folders.

With a wall-mounted tv that is really really annoying to do, does anyone know of a way around it that i can access the USB files? On my previous samsung the USB was in the source input list but not on the TCL.

Android Box Autorun APK

I have an UTV Android Box with Kodi Jarvis installed which can stream, however, the internet does not work on any other application as I think thé UTV servers are permanantly closed.

I had à 60mb USB which I would place APKs and plug into thé Android box, it would then open à page that states batch installation in which I can choose an apk to install, thé Kodi upgrade apk was larger than 60mb so I formatted thé USB and made thé partition larger but now when I plug in thé USB thé auto détection batch installer does not open so I can not install thé apk, does Anyone know how I can make this batch installer pop up automatically again?

This is an issue as thé Android Box uses UTV skin and there is no way to reset to base Android and there is no File manager with no internet Access to login to Gplay to download one.

Ordered Mi Box 3

Hi,

I just ordered a Mi Box 3 and it would be delivered by Mon-Tues.

I am well aware of the issues with Oreo but I just need to know if Xiaomi has made the update optional for users, because I heard that a patch has been out for users.

Any news about the scheme of things and what you'd like me to do or how to stop from updating?

Amazon Prime jn TCL P2MUS AndroidTV?

Hey, can someone upload the latest Amazon prime apk from bravia/panasonic tv (or whichever device for the .17 update)?

I have this TCL tv with official androidTV (nougat) Netflix certified but sadly no prime tv.

I have already tried two widely available APKs:

  1. Amazon Video_4.2.43-nvidia-armv7a.apk
  2. Prime Video_4.7.9-googleplay-armv7a.apk

Both goes upto the media selection (login works too) but won't play anything!

Tried mobile app too but that didn't work either. :(

TIA and Regards. ʘ‿ʘ

Mibox 3 Oreo audio issue

Hey all,

I just recently got a MiBox with Android TV Oreo on it. When trying to play videos with either DTS-MA 7.1 or Dobly TrueHD 7.1 audio I don't get any sound through my Denon AVR-S720W. I have tried with both Plex an Kodi with the audio pass through options turned on for both (I have Kodi set to 7.1 speaker config as well). Surround sound is enabled on the mibox as well. When playing those sources my receiver shows PCM Zero as the source on it. Has anyone had a smilar issue and have an idea of how I can solve it

Best way to stream videos from a computer on the same local network?

I have a shield TV hooked up my 4k TV setup but whenever I want to watch one of my big 10gb+ movies I always run into issues no matter what video player I try to use. Ive tried vlc, kodi, and even mxplayer through sideloading the apk. It's a pain to save things to an USB to play movies too because my shield is only 16gb so at this point I'd rather play things directly from my PC. What's the best method to stream videos from my desktop to my shield tv? I have them both on the same local network, the desktop by wire and the shield on a strong 5ghz wireless signal. My USB sticks are all so slow that I think putting things over through the wifi will have higher throughput anyways.

EDIT: Tried Plex as suggested. Even though it was horrid for playing things locally on my shield off my USB it turned out to be a perfect solution for playing things off my PC like a media server.
