Is a system backup of the MiBox possible ?

Greetings good people, I was wondering whether there is a way to backup the Mibox ( apps, settings and data) without rooting the box? I contacted Xiaomi support and was told that the MiBox does not backup capability. Following online research, it seems like I would be able to to a backup using the Helium backup app. Any other suggestions will be appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Mi box HBO now crash??

My Mi box just arrived, installed all of my normal streaming apps all of them work with the exception of HBO Now.

I live outside the US so I sideload most of my apps, I get them most from apkmirror, the latest version of the HBO Now apk for android tv is v.2.3.1.   It seems that I'm getting a login failure, the app wants me to sign in which I do then displays a unable to sign in briefly but then proceeds to open the HBO Now homescreen. I'm able to browse titles but as soon as I try to stream something the app would crash displaying 'unfortunately hbo now has stopped' and kick me back to the Mi box homescreen. When I open setting inside the app whenever I choose billing information the app would display the same error, also when I try to sign out it doesn't display my account as if I'm not even signed in.

HBO now on other devices work flawlessly, I do use a Smart dns service to access all my streaming apps and login credentials are inputted correctly.

I have tried sideloading previous apks v2.3.0 and v2.2.0 none of them work still the same problem.

So is this just an app bug or is HBO blocking the app to be sideloaded to the Mi box? It's nearing GOT season would really like this problem to away before then.

YouTube Videos With Pre-roll Ads Won't Play

I've been having a problem with YouTube for AndroidTV since day one.. most videos with preroll ads won't play... just sits with a loading circle forever. Sometimes if I go back and reload a few times, it'll eventually start but most of the time, nothing. I paid for a month of YouTube Red to test and sure enough, everything works the first time. I've tried clearing data, even up to a factory reset and I'm still seeing the issue. Any ideas?

CenturyLink will soon release an Android TV STB

Well, I know it's considered a shitty provider in the US, but this is what I found. It's not much but I still think it's cool to see a provider using Android TV in the US.

... or maybe I'm all wrong ?

[Mi Box]How to see HDCP connectivity

Like many other people I am having issues with netflix (4k)
My TV supports HDCP 2.2 and I have my Mi Box directly hooked up with a cable thats also capable.
I have the output set to 4k60hz and everything works fine.
Youtube plays 4k Videos without an issue.
However netflix reverts to 1080p and only 2.0 audio. Not 5.1 and not 4k.

Is there any way I can see if HDCP 2.2 is working correctly? I've looked around in the settings and the settings of my TV (Philips 43PUK7100) but I can't find the Info anywhere...

All help appreciated!

EDIT:
I installed this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidfung.drminfo&rdid=com.androidfung.drminfo
And it tells me the max HDCP level is 1.x which is strange as the cable and the TV specs say it supports HDCP 2.2

Edit 2:
So this morning I turned on the box just to check and wtf hdcp 2.2 is working...
I changed NOTHING. same cable same port same everything.
So now 4k is working HOWEVER I still don't have 5.1 sound from netflix. Plex and kodi work fine with 5.1

Mibox and 4k60fps content with YouTube

Has anyone had any luck with 4k60 content on the mibox YouTube app? The mibox itself shows it can connect at 4k60 in the display settings, but 4k60 content through YouTube seems to just revert to 1080p60 . 4k30 content seems to display fine, just no 4k60fps. My shield TV displays 4k60 in YouTube just fine.

NVIDIA SHIELD - Alternative Launchers (KODI)?

I've had a Nexus Player for a while now, and just ordered an Nvidia Shield (arriving Friday EEEEEEEEEE!!).

When I get it I'd like to try to set it up with Kodi or SPMC as the launcher. I don't want autostart. I want Kodi to be the actual launcher where the home button returns to Kodi, etc.

I've read that there have been two ways to do this:

  • ADB commands, although from what I've seen this no longer works with Nougat.

  • Root.

I don't want to root, because of Netflix recently locking out Netflix access of rooted devices.

What is my best option for achieving what I'd like to do? Is my understanding that the ADB method no longer works on Nougat correct? Am I able to downgrade to Marshmallow? Would there be any downsides to doing so?

Any advice in this regard would be appreciated.

Is anyone else having trouble playing most 5.1 channel audio formats correctly on their Mi Box?

The only 5.1 channel audio format that works on my mi box is AC3 for some reason. DTS, FLAC, AAC, etc only plays in stereo mode with my receiver. At first, I thought it might have been a problem with Plex and Kodi. I kept changing the settings on both programs but nothing worked. Finally I just plugged in my flash drive and tested a random video file with AAC 5.1 audio. I played it in MX player and VLC and both programs only outputted stereo audio.

I'm not sure if this is a bug affecting all mi boxes or I just received a lemon. If it's a bug a might have to try to return it to walmart (I think I have a month left according to their return policy). It would break my heart to have to return it. Other than the 5.1 audio problem, it works pretty okay in every other area. I just wanted a 1080p streaming box ;_;

The funny thing is that my old crappy 1st gen Amazon fire TV stick, whose interface is so slow now it makes me want to rip my hair out, plays these formats fine in surround sound mode. Also it streams high bitrate (15-20 mbps) video files a lot better than my mi box. When I play these files on my mi box, I get the "connection to the server is not fast enough" error more frequently even though my wireless internet speed is fast enough.

Did anyone update their Mi Box to the Nougot beta and fix this problem? I'm thinking about getting the Amazon fire TV box. I would hate to lose the google cast features though.

-------TL;DR-------

**--**Can't play DTS, FLAC, AAC, etc 5.1 audio files in surround sound mode. Only plays in stereo mode.

**--**Only 5.1 AC3 works weirdly enough

**--**Doesn't work streamed to Plex/Kodi

**--**Doesn't work played directly from USB in VLC or MX player

**--**Works on 1st gen fire TV Stick so no problem specifically with receiver.

**--**Can updating to Nougot solve the problem? Is this a bug on most Mi boxes or is mine a lemon?

My neighbor's Bluetooth device keeps trying to pair w/ my TV (interrupting what I'm watching)

I keep getting a popup that asks me to enter the pin for a "Blue Station HD2". After searching for that text, I came up with this user manual for a bluetooth stereo tranceiver. I don't own this device, so I'm assuming its one of my neighbors' (I live in an apartment). It's annoying because this will pop up several times in the time span of an hour or two, and the dialog completely exits whatever I'm watching (whether YouTube, HBO, Netflix, etc). Is there a way to stop this from happening? I thought about disabling Bluetooth, but then my remote wouldn't work.

App with menu to connect bluetooth device?

I recently connected my bluetooth headphones to my shield and watched a movie, it worked great! However I still have them paired to my phone and to my dismay I found the only option for bluetooth devices is unpair, do I have to pair my bluetooth headphones to my android tv every single time I want to use them?

Surly theres an app that initiates bluetooth connection?

Also is there a way to filter apps on play store so it only shows apps comparable with my android tv?

Brand New mac/win app called Soda Player with acestream, casting, and great subtitle handling

Here's the subreddit: /r/sodaplayer/

Still very new so it's still pretty barebones, but for me it works perfectly on my mac casting to my Mibox. Acestream support for mac is also amazing.

I have been waiting for an app like this. After casting, anything else just seems unnecessarily complicated.

Using Android's Netflix APK on Mi Box

Hi all, i just wanted to share you my partial solution for the Netflix issues on the Mi Box.

You just install the Android version for Netflix. I think it is the 4.16 version. You get the smartphone interface, but you also get HD. With a wireless mouse, you can get a better experience.

This link has the option to download the APK: https://help.netflix.com/es/node/57688

Mi Box Retroarch Problems

I have been trying to use Retroarch on the mi box and I have been having a lot of problems.

First, every time I move around the menu, the whole screen flickers black for a second.

Second, it slows down and crashes all the time on me.

Third, controlling it is really janky. Even when I set it to allow all controllers to control the menu, when I configure my Xbox 360 controller, it defaults to the Xbox controller and won't let me use my remote to navigate the menu and it makes the Xbox bumpers move up and down the menu.

Any ideas how to fix this or a link to a good config for Retroarch?

When downloading Android Phone apps for use on the Mi Box, what dpi setting and architecture is ideal? ARM, ARM64 etc.

With popular apps such as Youtube I see DPI settings all the way from "no dpi" up to 480 dpi at a site like apkmirror.

For the instruction set I'm 99 percent sure ARM or ARM64 is proper, but I'm not sure which one is best.

I don't think the Mi Box uses an x86 architecture.

Adding IR commands to the Mi Box

SPMC update for subtitle security vulnerability?

Not sure where else to ask this--has anyone seen or heard anything about SPMC and the recent news that SRT subtitle files downloaded from specific sites can run malicious code in certain media players?

Looks like Kodi released a patch, so did VLC, but the current SPMC is 16.6, and I think the bug fix on Kodi is version 17.2.

I run SubZero on my Plex Media Server and it gets subs from OpenSubtitles, and I'm concerned that those subs may be a threat if run from SPMC.

Any information that anyone can provide is much appreciated!
