Favorite useful apps?

So I cut the cord and have been using the nvidia shield exclusively for the past year. So far it's been used as our TV box with Tablo, Sling, Hulu, and Kodi (trying to convince the wife and kids to drop either hulu or sling, but everyone has their favorite). Generally pretty happy with the viewing options. We're not into gaming, so other than as a novelty, we don't use the shield for games. However -- I've been wondering -- since android phones and tablets have so many other productive apps available, for everything from shopping to travel to dieting to interior decorating -- what other productivity apps are people using for non-TV purposes? I occasionally check the weather. That's about it though. Thoughts?

What Makes A Good Android TV Box?

I am thinking of buying one for my brother, but I am a bit confused. What is the difference between a 50$ box and nvidia shield?

I mean if he only wants to watch tv. Is there any actual difference?

Also from my research I found out that Android tv is not good for watching live sports. What do you mainly uses yours for?

Pre-ordered Shield 2 Remote, got shield 1 remote?

Shield 1 or 2 remote?

So I just got my preorder for the shield 2 remote in the mail, but the box makes me think this is a shield 1 remote. The box says "Headphone Jack for Private Listening" on the back. Is this actually a shield 1 remote or a shield 2 remote?

As I'm going to be returning it (because I just bought the $200 bundle from Best Buy), I don't want to open the box.

So they either shipped me a shield 1 remote, or they're reusing the box from the shield 1 remote (which I highly doubt because of the lack of a headphone jack).

Controller comparison

Anyone have experience with both? It might come down to personal preference but I'm most likely picking one up once the voice assistant feature goes live. I'd like to know if its an upgrade outside of that. Thanks!

Voice Search/Assistant through a universal remote: Is it possible?

With the gen 2 base model Shield, is there anyway to get 100% of the remote features mapped to a universal remote? The only problem I see is voice search. With android 7.0 it's always listening, so it shouldn't be a problem, right? I could just leave the Shield remote in the drawer and use my universal remote.

What is the state of Ad Blocking, root, and custom ROMs?

I'm looking to buy the gen 2 Shield TV base model. One thing that would be nice to have is system wide ad blocking. What's the best way to do this? Do you need root access?

Also, are custom ROMs a thing? What about launchers? Honestly I'm fine with the default stuff, I'm just wondering. Are there downsides to root?

NVidia Shield 2017 first impressions

I got my NVidia shield (european version) yesterday and had some time to play to it. It is without a doubt a huge upgrade to the Minix X8H.

Positives:

  • Worked without any trouble with an Harmony Remote
  • CEC worked great
  • nvidia streaming is impressive
  • Controller is not as uncomfortable as it first looks like
  • Plex works amazingly well
  • Live channels are awesome with Zattoo (pity I still haven't been able to import anything into CumulusTV - doesn't seem to sync with Google drive as it should)

Negatives:

  • Casting doesn't work from Google Home (its stuck at version 1.20.67611, and I can't find a way to update it)
  • Amazon video uninstalls itself on first run (haven't found a way to install it again..even with VPN, I think it actually deletes the apk)

It would be great if someone had a solution for both negatives, given that they software side.

Overall best streaming box I've ever used.

Update [2017.01.18]:

IR Remote options for Nvidia Shield

I wasn't considering the Shield before because I need Amazon Prime and Plex. I don't really like the remotes that come with the Shield and would like to use a boring universal learning remote.

  1. Get the new Shield and use a Flirc.

  2. Buy a used first gen Shield (and program my remote how?).

  3. Buy a new Shield and suck it up and use the included remote.

Help with audio passthrough in kodi

Have a Le Eco tv with built in Android tv, audio connected to denon receiver via optical cable. Trying to watch movies with dts surround. If i pay the file via a fike browser and use the default video player it works perfect, audio and video are great DTS pops up on the receiver. When i play the same file in kodi by default it doesnt send the dts signal. If i enable passthrough i get no sound and the video stops. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I can get around it by using a separate app but would really like to have everything in one place that is also wife friendly. Before anyone suggests plex i would also like to not have my computer on all the time to act as the server, at the moment everything did on a drive connected to my router.

Getting Harmony to work with Shield and PS Vue

I got the new Shield TV today, and most everything has been working great. I can't, however, seem to select things in the Vue app. I can move directionally, but can't select anything unless I use the original Shield remote or controller. I can control all other apps just fine with the Harmony. Any ideas?

Time to move on from Mi Box

I've tried to love the Mi Box, I really have. I tried 2 times to buy them early when Walmart put them on the shelf before street date, and I went back on release day to get mine.

I use at least one of them almost every day, and for more than just a few minute at a time. They've been a disappointment from the start, and I'm tired of waiting for Xiaomi to make them better.

I can get over the 4K thing mostly. I only have two 4K TVs and they both have a Shield TV on them. The thing that I can't get over is how god-awful these things are with sports streaming on Vue or Watch ESPN. Fox Sports universally sucks on all platforms, so I won't complain about that.

The Mi Box cannot deliver 1080p/60fps for smooth sports performance. Not on WiFi, not on Ethernet. If I plug a Mi Box into the same Ethernet cable where my Shield TV pulls 700Mbps+, the Mi Box brings in 7Mbps. Given that I'm using a USB 2 Ethernet adapter I'm not going to get anything over 100Mbps. I'd settle for 20, but I can't get it. The Nexus Player with the same setup gets 95Mbps+ every time.

I wanted the AirTV to be good enough for my bedroom and the home office as they aren't used as often, but it just isn't. The box works well enough I suppose, but the Sling TV customizations would drive my wife nuts as she never uses Sling TV. Hell, the Sling customizations are starting to get to me too, and I use Sling TV a good bit.

I'm picking up the two Shield TV gen 2s that I just ordered from Best Buy this afternoon. It isn't money that I want to spend on set top boxes, but streaming is now how my family watches TV. I'm tired of settling for an inferior experience just because I have money tied up in a few cheap China boxes.

I'm giving away two of my Mi Boxes to people that don't give a squirt about sports and the third is going in a spare room. I am bearish on Xiaomi delivering the updates that they promised anytime soon given that they just issued a Marshmallow update a week or so ago.

Time to cut bait.

How to give Kodi access to power states? (root)

I deleted the LeanBackLauncher and set XBMC Launcher as my new launcher, but Kodi still doesn't have access to the power states. Those of you who have have been successful in this, how did you do it?

I'm of course rooted.

Very annoying problem. Imagine watching a movie and suddenly the device goes into sleep because of the power timer set in main Android TV settings, not inactivity within Kodi.
