YouTube app on Nougat for shield TV

Does anyone know if the you tube app gets updated in the Nougat 7.0 update? Does the nexus player have a new version? Just curious as the current one hasn't been updated in months on the shield.

Others accessing content - privacy question

From what I understand, you use your Google account on Android TV. How does this work with apps like Gmail, YiuTube or pretty much anything else that contains personal and personalized content? In case of Gmail, would anyone who's using the box be able to access my email? Screw with my YouTube playlists/recommendations?

Suggestions for VPN to watch USA content in Europe?

I just got a MiBox3, and I'd like to be able to use some video streaming sites with free (paid?) content like Hulu, HBO, CBS, etc.

Ideally I'd like a free option, but I may be inclined to something paid if it's worth it. I can't tap into my router, so anything like that would not be an option.

Suggestions?

Mibox 3 - is it possible to delay the 3.5mm analogue output?

I'm finding that the audio out of the 3.5mm output is slightly ahead of my TV. Does anyone know if there is a global setting that will delay the audio out of the 3.5mm jack?

If I Google Cast something from my phone to the Mi Box, is it being re-encoded with with a lossy video codec as part of the Google Cast process?

Comcast (complete dickbags) block almost everything on AndroidTV, so I'm forced to Google Cast HBOGo from my phone to my Mi Box.

What's really odd to me is that the quality doesn't seem to be any worse than when I would watch HBOGo directly through my old FireStickTV. ie, it still looks noticeably better than the not-so-great, low bitrate MPEG2 1080i stream that I get through my "HD" cable box from Comcast.

Android dev here. What TV apps do you want to see?

I've been building a few simple open source utility apps for Android TV, including the most recent "Family Calendar".

I have one more week of break from college, so I figured this was a good time to hack together another simple TV project.

What kind of app would be the most useful? If you see your idea already listed, upvote that comment so it's easier to parse the comments.

Of course, if any other developers are here and want to help, feel free to join the project.

CES2017 TV PANELS

how long we will have to wait to have Samsung and LG with AndroidTV? I am amazed by the possibilities that new TV PANELS are bringing to Android-TV OS; take a look at CES2017 LG Wallpaper edition, you can throw away the "media-box" that is connected to by a flat-cable and connect a Android-TV BOX into it, that handles channels, sound, multiple HDMI input and everything else, Samsung also releasing a TV that has fiber-optics connected "media-box" outside the television, so in theory it can be "upgradable" to a Android-TV OS.

Nexus Player to Shield user here: controller questions

Hi all, I finally bought an Nvidia Shield TV to replace our Nexus Player... much more powerful, plus looking forward to checking out some of the gaming functionality! :)

Beside performance, the only real difference coming from the Nexus Player seems to be the remote. I love the sleek design of the Shield's basic remote! But I have a few questions...

  • Window swap/task manager? (to quick swap or close programs) - on the NP, long press the home button did this, but on Shield long pressing the home button wants to record and broadcast stuff, which I will likely never use. Is there a way to remap this on the Shield remote?
  • Turn on TV? - minor gripe, but I used to be able to hit the home button on my NP remote, and my tv would automatically turn on and auto tune-in to the correct source on my tv. I've tried this on the Shield remote but it doesn't seem to work. Sure, I can turn on the TV by other remotes, but I liked having the functionality rolled in with just the one remote.
  • Long press select to rearrange apps on home screen? - long pressing select here doesn't seem to do anything on the main screen. If not this way, is there another way to rearrange the apps?

Thanks all!

Edit: checking out the Shield's faq site, it states that "SHIELD supports HDMI-CEC" (TIL that's what it was called) but it doesn't say how. Anyone had success with this?

Suggestions for a low cost, small TV with AndroidTV?

I'm looking for a smallish (~40 in) TV with Android TV built in. I'm having a hard time tracking this down as all the Bravias and Aquos are larger TVs and are quite expensive. The low cost Hisense and TCLs generally use Roku TV. Obviously, i can always go with a Mi Box paired with a cheap TV, but for useability reasons, I'd really prefer an all-in-one solution like the Bravia TVs.

Final Fantasies not working for anyone else?

I purchased Final Fantasy 3 and 4 for my phone awhile ago and wanted to try them out on my Nvidia ShieldTV. I can download them fine from the app store on the Shield, but when I go to open them, there's nothing but a black screen and no audio. Pressing the back button will bring up the dialogue to close the app, but that's about as much interaction with the games as I can get. I can uninstall and re-install all day with the same result.

I have the 16gb version with the games installed on a usb drive formatted as internal space. Could that be the culprit?

Newcomer, concerns about privacy/data collection/etc...

After 1 year of waiting for a refresh of the ShieldTV or a good contestant, I'm considering buying the new Nvidia Shield TV. But before, I have some concerns about AndroidTV and data collection, privacy, and how Google is spying on me (damn!). I don't really know Android so sorry if I ask common/silly questions, I just want a quick recap of what I can or can't do on this OS.

  • What data is collected by Google/Nvidia/tiers companies, when I use the Shield? why and how?

  • Can I disable the "always listening" function? (really scary) I don't really need voice command, if needed I mostly prefer talking to the remote after pressing the mic button.

  • Should I be worried about anything else? I'm no privacy freak, it's just a TV box, but I don't want to be "fully open" to Google either.

  • Also a more practical question : I don't have any Android device, will it impair my use of the ShieldTV? I have a Youtube/Gmail account, I guess it's ok.

  • If I ever get an Android smart TV (or any other TV OS) as it is becoming the norm, how will it interact with the ShieldTV? Will I have a hard time with duplicate functions?
