Trying to cut the cord

Everyone in the family is sold on the idea of cutting the cord with one notable exception. My Fiancee's mom really enjoys watching the local TV station (KTLA5) in her mornings before work.

KTLA has an Android App, which I've tried to side-load but it's really janky. They stream via livestream.com but there isn't a Livestream app for Android TV, and sideloading the official mobile app is even uglier.

So, before I buy an antenna and the HDHomerun Extend, which is more than the cost of the Shield, can anyone think of another way to stream KTLA5 to the Shield TV?

YouTube 60fps issues

I have a new Mi box and it is struggling with 60fps youtube videos. When playing 1080 or even 720 content that's 60fps I'll get a second or 2 stutter of both video and audio. It happens very frequently during the videos. Is there a way to disable that in YouTube? I'm tired of having to lower the content to 480.

Ive returned the box and got a new one thinking it was a hardware issue but same, I've reset to default, uninstalled youtube updates even played with some of the developers settings but same issue.

Wireless AC Android Box?

I'm desperately looking for an (affordable) android box that's 802.11ac compatible. I know that both the Fire TV and Firestick as well as the Nvidia shield are, but does anyone know of any other options? I'd prefer something I can buy on Amazon. I've bought Chinese boxes that are 2.4/5Ghz compatible but they're still SLOW compared to say, and iPhone 6s when testing for download speed. So even though the device would connect to my 5ghz network it would top out at like 35mbps.

NVIDIA Shield and the Xfinity App

Do you guys know if the Xfinity TV app works on the Shield? I am normally a Roku user just for ease of use and the wife likes it, but I am paying almost $30 a month for my cable box etc. The Shield seems great, and if the app works I think it could be a great addition. Just want it to be simple without rooting the device and all that. Is it standard download like on my Android phone?

Purchased Sony Android TV, lots of questions

I purchased a Roku TV about a month ago and the quality of the TV (not surprisingly) wasn't the best. Despite the quality issues, I really enjoyed the easy integration of the cord-cutter-focused features -- Netflix, HBO Go, Sling TV, etc. all just a couple clicks away.

With that being said, I decided to return the Sharp Roku TV and purchased a Sony Bravia Android TV. Thus far, I've had mixed emotions about the Android TV integration and I'm hoping the community can help me sort through some of the head scratchers:

  1. No integrated channel guide? I don't have a cable box and I figured with Google's backing, Android TV would have a fantastic channel guide. No such luck as far as I can tell. I configured my channel listing via the QAM tuner. UPDATE: Thanks everyone for point me to the Live Channels app.

  2. The "Featured Apps" section needs to be pared down or removed. I'm going to investigate the HALauncher, but it appears to be a mixed bag based upon the warning on their Google Play page. UPDATE: Disabling Sony Shelf and Sony Select did the trick, but removed access to some of the native apps on the TV. The only option is to sideload them.

  3. The search feature is decent, but frustrating at times. I'll ask, "What time does The Walking Dead come on tonight?", and it shows me YouTube results for The Walking Dead.

All in all, it feels like it's on the cusp of being great, but it's lacking elements that a consumer would expect from an Android-branded television. My concern is that this is typical Google -- it teases something great and then fails to put their weight behind the product.

I'm hoping someone can put my mind at ease, but I'm starting to question the premium I paid for this television when compared to the Roku TV.

UPDATE: Added note about updating my channel listing via the QAM tuner

Amazon Appstore Possible? Or, Options for Streaming NBC/CSN Sports

I'm trying to sideload the NBC Sports for Fire onto my Mi Box. The app installs fine, but upon opening it, I get a message informing me that I need to have the Amazon App store installed on my device (and presumably logged in). Which is simple enough, I though. I downloaded Amazon Underground (which I guess is what the appstore is now called?) and installed it. Couldn't log in, however. I got a white screen after selecting log in from the initial menu options. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas on troubleshooting this issue? I'm essentially trying to do this:

http://www.androidheadlines.com/2015/02/android-tv-install-amazon-appstore-purchased-apps-nexus-player.html

Except it looks like maybe there's been a change in the Amazon apk that is now preventing this work around. Alternatively, does anyone have any suggestions for how I'd be able to stream the NBC sports stuff? I've tried the Kodi plugin, but was met with constant buffering every minute or so that made it unbearable to watch. I've tried using a sideloaded browser, but the NBC/Comcast website requires flash to stream, which Chrome doesn't support. I also can't cast it for some reason from my laptop browser, because the quality just turns to garbage. Any help would be appreciated!

Looking for some Android TV users interested in beta testing my stock market app - MarketCast

I am the developer of MarketCast for Android TV and Fire TV. The current app is very early but I am on the verge of finally bringing some new features. Before I launch these updates it would be great if any of you would like to beta test and possibly provide feedback. Here is the link to opt-in if you are interested.

https://play.google.com/apps/testing/co.adamapps.financeapp

Feedback can be sent to contactmarketcast@gmail.com or you can use the playstore listing feedback channel once you opt-in.

If you have not heard of MarketCast it is just a way to see your stock portfolio on your TV with live updates. Also, just to note there is a mobile version with cast support but this beta is focusing on the Android TV version. Thanks!

Update: Released new beta version 2.0.2 with many bugs fixed.

Archos vs MX Player vs VLC vs Plex for local playback?

I'm just curious what people are using for their video players and why. I'm currently using Archos paid version because I like the Leanback UI and how it automatically pulls metadata and minimal setup that is required. Plus the option to stream .torrent files. However, Archos sometimes doesn't seem to want find some movies or tv shows when it does it's media scan of my library.

However, sometimes the a/v is out of sync with Archos, especially if I skip ahead a lot in a movie for example, but works perfectly in VLC. The only thing is I hate how VLC's UI looks.

I havn't used MX for a while, but from what I remember I wasn't a fan of that UI either. But with the new Shield TV update, does MX player have better sound quality than the other players?

Plex I can't seem to have it discover my local media. It has meta data for movies I don't even have on my Shield TV anymore, but doesn't update to movies that are currently on the Shield. Is Plex more for streaming than local playback? Does the Plex server even have to be on just for local playback?

P.S. Don't even mention Kodi. Kodi is dead to me.

NFL with Cable Login on AndroidTV?

I have nflnetwork through Charter. I can log into the nflnonline.NFL.com page and authentic and watch redzone on Sundays through my PC.

I have a firetv box, but there is no way to watch through firetv with cable logins. I've tried sideloading a web browser (thinks it's mobile even with user agent changes) and trying to sideload the NFL app (requires Google apps, which fire doesn't have). So I'm looking for a new box.

If I get an Android TV box (mibox or shield), Is there a streaming app to allow me to use my cable account and watch the official redzone stream?

Thanks

Philips vs. Sony Android TV

Having read a couple of threads on here I wonder if there really is a significant difference between the android TV on a Philips and android tv on a Sony.

Can anyone point out the differences, if any?

EDIT: Thanks for the response, decided to go for the Sony KD49XD7005. Looked like the right choice for my budget and needs.

Mi Box Audio Sounds Terrible

I have a Vizio P series (4K Smartcast) and decided to pick up a Mi Box for Sling TV/PS Vue, since they're just kind of clunky only casting them. I'm finding that the audio sounds considerably worse through the Mi Box than through Google Cast straight to the TV. The biggest difference is in Netflix. It sounds low quality, and there are drastic changes from quiet to loud. I'm running a 5.1 sound bar system, over HDMI ARC. I've tried the three different audio settings (PCM, HDMI, and SPDIF), but I don't notice any difference between any of them, nor do I know what is actually changing between them. Is this an issue with the Mi Box or am I do something wrong?

How do USB drives work with Android TV?

I am trying to work out how to use my external hard drive with an Android TV, and I don't really want to risk loosing all the data that is on it by doing something stupid.

I am planning on plugging the external hard drive into Kodi (on a Mi Box), and then watching the files from it. However, I want to be able to unplug the hard drive, and copy files to and from it aswell free of will.

Is this going to work with it as it currently is, or does Android TV have to format it before it can be used?

Possible to use an emulator (N64, SNES, etc.) on a Sony Android TV?

[deleted]

1 Answers

Hi guys so I just downloaded a multipack N64 emulator

I got this emulator you see and I'm currently using a PS3 controller to play with it. So here's the deal whenever I connect my PS3 controller unto the tv it automatically serves as a secondary TV remote like when I press the d-pad it functions accordingly like a TV remote would do and when I press "x" it functions as enter and "o" it functions as "back". Here's the problem, whenever I play a game on the emu and as I press "o" in the game (as a certain command for the game) it also exits me from the emu and opens the emulator main menu (due to this I can't use "o" for the game) because as I said earlier it functions as a "back" command like a remote as well. How do I resolve this problem? I'm satisfied if I can disable the PS3 controller to function as a TV remote.

Mi Box USB Hub

Looking for recommendations for a USB hub to attach to a Mi Box. One USB port won't work for me. I have an air mouse controller I'd like to use which takes up a USB slot. Not to mention I bought several 64 GB micro SDcards thinking I was going to use them on normal android boxes for extra storage.

So I'm looking for a USB hub that has a Micro SD slot and works on the Mi Box. External powered is ok.
