Has there been any word on Nougat for the Shield TV?

New features look great, has NVIDIA or anyone said anything about the update?

Downloading firetv apps to sideload to androidtv

I've had some success with side loading firetv apps to androidtv, to fill some of the void these carriers are missing.

The challenge now is finding the actual apks for fire TV apps, as I don't own a fire TV.

Do anyone know of a way I can download apks meant for firetv without actually having one?

shield goes to sleep while listening to google play music

I'm doing some painting around the house and decided to try to listen to some music through the TV, but the TV throws up the screen saver and goes to sleep after a while and the music stops playing. Is there a setting somewhere that I can add an idle exception or something for google play music?

Mi Box spotted in the wild at Walmart selling for $69

Over at Android Police, commenter George Garrett has spotted the new Mi Box on the shelf at his local Walmart selling for $69! There has still been no official release of this product from Xiaomi, so maybe an employee jumped the gun and put it out early.

$69 is probably cheaper than any of us were expecting to see this box -- an Android TV streamer that can handle UHD HDR @ 60 fps -- selling for!

Nougat ruined my Nexus Player, should I sideload a ROM?

Hi All,

Ever since the Nougat update on my Nexus Player every single app crashes (Netflix in particular), the whole thing is slow to the point of being barely usable and even casting has been shoddy.

I know I can go into settings and clear cache and data for the crashing apps, but essentially I shouldn't have to do that every time. Will sideloading a ROM like the Pure Nexus ROM fix this?

Android TV set for an older HDTV- DVI only

So here is the the deal. Back in 2003 my dad built a nice home theatre room. Sound insulation in the walls, good 5.1 speakers, Denon Receiver and a 60 inch 1080i Sony Grand Wega LCD projection TV. It is still pretty sweet, and honestly we haven't felt like updating it yet (hassle).

However we want to add some digital support through either an Android TV set or a Chromecast, and this TV only has a single DVI port (HDMI wasn't available). What are some Android TV sets that would play nice with our existing TV? Currently we have a Blu ray player connected via an HDMI to DVI cable but then have separate audio cables running though the receiver as the player had those ports.

Is there an Android TV box that would be best suited for this type of setup? We aren't ready to upgrade our TV yet to 4K.

Are we expecting Google assistant to come to Android TV?

I'd love to my make my home smarter, I wish Google would put some effort into making it possible for me to tell my phone to play for example heat on Netflix in my livingroom and bam, there it is.

IIRC there was a video on Google's last presentation of a family where a kid used the assistant to do this kind of thing with a Chromecast and he was talking to a speaker in the room.

Purchased a used Shield TV

Hey guys,

I've been wanting a Shield TV for some time, but right when I had a good change to purchase one, they'd been out of stock forever. But one popped up on Amazon Warehouse Deals for a nice price so I took the plunge. It's hard to tell if it's really in good shape or how used it was, so I know it's kind of a gamble...worst case scenario I could return it I suppose.

But supposing the device is in good physical condition and it works normally, does anyone suggest any precautions I might take before turning on a used device and connecting it to my network? I haven't used an Android TV before, but am familiar with the OS in general from my phones/tablets and such. Could I just power the device, and immediately wipe it or something?

Thanks everyone! Excited to get it in the mail!

Win10 app remote control app for Android TV?

Hi, I want to be able to control the Shield ATV from my desktop where I'm seated most of the time.

I have the dedicated remote which is super handy, but sometimes I leave it lying somewhere away from the PC. Grabbing a smartphone is not too practical. I know I can emulate android apps on windows, but shouldn't there be some dedicated app out there for remote control?

Closest I landed with google was Winpho Unified Remote app

Looking to switch to AndroidTV box

So I have been using a couple of KitKat 4.4 android boxes for my home theatre for a while now but starting to think that upgrading to a real Android TV box is a good idea. Primary issues at the moment are complete lack of updates, general feel of OS as mostly phone but on a TV, recent YouTube app update limits to 360p and live streams don't work. Audio handling/pass through is pretty weak as well.

Main apps that I use are:

  • Kodi (for play of local SMB hosted content)
  • Netflix
  • YouTube
  • Some web surfing

I am also thinking of upgrading to a 4K TV at some point soon.

What will be the best discrete box for this? The Nvidia Shield seems very expensive for what it is but happy to pay for quality and long term support.

One last thing is that I like something that can mostly work with cursor type controls like a Blu-ray player. Waving a mouse around is a pain and using a game controller annoying.

Playstation Vue for AndroidTV

Has anyone heard whether Sony has committed to bringing PS Vue to the AndroidTV platform (and timeline)? I have the Nvidia Shield and have little need for my DirectTV subscription ever since getting Vudu to round out my other streaming needs. My major concern is the lack of local news, CNN, etc. While I have tried Haystack, it just does not seem very well integrated. My PS4 came with PS Vue and (in Philly), I get all the local channels + some other channels that I tend to watch.

Saving YouTube video to "Watch Later" (or any) playlist? Or bookmarking them in some way?

There's a great video on the "Recommendations Row" of Android TV. I click to watch it. I'm brought to the YouTube app; I'm logged in and see all of my subscriptions and have access to my history and previously-saved videos. But how do I bookmark this new video, or otherwise save it to a playlist? Surely this is possible? For the life of me I can't find any UI for it. Is "liking" the video really the only way to achieve any kind of "bookmark?"

I'm running Android TV 6.0.1 on Sony Bravia X750D, and have a subscription to YouTube Red, if any of that matters.

Anyways, what can you guys tell me about the differences, what it really is and any hidden costs behind them. Thanks guys! (Also, I'm in alberta, Canada if that makes a difference?)
