Fire TV vs Android TV. Come on developers!

I just plugged in my Fire TV to update it. I prefer my Shield TV, but it disappointed me to see how many apps the Fire TV has that isn't on Android TV. ABC, NBC, and NBC Sports all have Fire TV apps and have no excuse for not being on Android TV. CNN go and OAN are awesome news apps on Fire TV but absent on Android TV. PlayStation Vue is an awesome new service that would gain a bunch of new viewers if it released an Android TV app. I don't understand why developers are so slow to release apps especially since Android TV continues to pick up steam, especially developers that already have Fire TV apps (android under its skin). Here's a list of notable video and tv everywhere apps on Fire TV that aren't on Android TV. It would take developers minimal work to get these on Android TV.

ABC, NBC, NBC Sports, PlayStation Vue, CNN Go, OAN, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, Tubi TV, Watch TBS, Watch TNT, Watch TCM, Smithsonian Channel, A&E, History Channel, Hallmark Channel, Watch DIY, Watch Cooking, and Amazon Instant Video (yeah I'll throw that in as well)

I know many of these apps can be sideloaded over, but that's not my point. These need to be native through the Play Store. And here's a list of notable apps missing from both Fire TV and Android TV. We need to start holding these companies feet to the flame, putting pressure on them to support our platform.

SYFY Now, The CW, BeIn Sports, Sundance TV, USA Now, Discovery Go, Science Channel, AMC, Spike, Bravo, Adult Swim, Comedy Central, Nat Geo TV, Univision Now, Telemundo Now, Cartoon Network, Destination America, Esquire, Freeform, IFC, NFL Network, TLC, TV Land. FOX News Channel (no live feed), MSNBC, Animal Planet

Also Fire TV has Shovel Knight which is a ridiculously awesome 8bit game that combines elements of Super Mario Bros 3, Duck Tales, and Castlevania. It's a shame Android TV users aren't able to experience it.

[Q] Anyone found a way to force app to landscape without root?

Title. There is an app that i would like to use with AndroidTV, but

a) doesnt't have a AndroidTv version, so i had to side load it

b) it has only portrait mode

On my phone with App Settings (Xposed module) i was able to force landscape mode, and worked well.

Now i'm looking for an app (non-root) to force a 3rd party app into landscape.

New to Android TV - The hype is real

So I bought my parents this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/sony-75-class-74-5-diag-led-2160p-smart-4k-ultra-hd-tv-with-high-dynamic-range-black/4804404.p?id=1219825175607&skuId=4804404

I had no idea that it was Android TV enabled. In fact, I probably wouldn't have purchased it had I known, because I wanted to get them a "dumb" TV so I wouldn't have to do tech support for them all the time. Also, as much as I love Android, I really haven't heard anything THAT great about Android TV. Holy shit I'm glad I was wrong. I've used Apple TV and hated it. I have several Chromecasts and love them, but this is on a whole different level. Voice control isn't shit. The system is fast, intuitive, and beautiful. I love it and I can't wait to get one for myself. Sorry if I come off as "hail corporate" or whatever, but I'm just so fucking thrilled that this tech is actually good. I can't wait to comb through this sub to find good tips and tricks.

Netflix for Android TV and default audio - Can this be changed?

I am using Netflix on my Sony Android TV. I have the optical audio output connected to my Schiit Bifrost DAC, which only supports stereo inputs. When I am watching Netflix, I have to change the audio from 5.1 to Stereo each time I watch content that includes a surround audio stream. Is there a way to tell Netflix to default to the stereo audio stream? As far as I can tell, there are no settings in Netflix to change.

Any help would be appreciated.

How to change the aspect ratio on Sony Pravia w800c

So I downloaded some Blu-Ray movies with 2.40 Aspect ratio and I tried to play them on my Laptop with a HDMI Cable to my TV but still doesn't shows me the full screen.

So I tried to get the movie in a Flash memory and played it on my tv, it shows me the full screen but with half screen like black up ,black down and the movie in the middle I tried to change the Aspect ratio, there is no option such like that, I get to change it by one way "Zoom" "Normal" and two other options, but didn't get options for specific restitution

My TV is Sony Pravia 2015 W800c

Dolphin Emulator

I'm a huge fan of emulators for android and have all the systems I want current;y set up as of now minus Gamecube. I loved dolphin on my pc and had run it on my android phone many years ago but was disappointing with its performance at the time (it had just released and was convinced at the time that android would have been incapable of running dolphin) but now that I am very comfortable with android TV I was wondering if any of you guys use it on the regular or if it is still a WIP. If you guys do run it and it runs well, a link to the best build and possibly either a compatibility list for games or a optimized settings list would save me a lot of time.

Sony XBR-65X750D stuck on infinite boot loop

Had this TV for under a month and it's just stuck on loop of the Sony logo followed by the android loading animation, TV will reboot and do it over and over. I can't power it down without unplugging it. Is this common? Has anyone fixed this issue? I've looked through the sony forums for people having similar issues and the best assistance they can provide is "try unplugging it". I have absolutely no interest in having a tech come to my home to try and fix it, if that's the only solution I'll just return the fucking thing.

Exclusivity kills legit-digital for me. I'd enjoy a solid application that loaded every library from the 500 services, who have the rights to whatever movie, together.

The digital world is a weird place. Not only is every premium channel like Showtime and HBO trending in this direction but we're already shifting through apps on top of apps like Amazon Video, Ultraflix, Netflix, Hulu, Google Play, VUDU, and many more just to stream specific content. All of these exclusive deals forcing the customer to download what feels like 500 different applications to get the movies they want really makes pirating services on applications like Kodi seem like the premium. Another giant con to going digital is the amount of digging it takes to find the service that provides the content you're looking for the best. When a movie is found on all the apps, not every service provides it the same.. in 4k, 5.1 surround, etc. I apologize for the rant. Anyone know of an app that consolidates this nonsense? Is something like this even possible? :(

Unable To Check For System Updates?

On this new Sony Bravia XBR65X850D running Android TV 6.0.1, I go to Settings -> About -> System Update -> Check for a system update...

...and it searches forever. For hours and hours. I ultimately have to cancel out. I know it's a new set, already running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, and doesn't have a pending update (yet) but it's weird that the UI doesn't simply report that. Why does it keep searching without giving up after a certain amount of time? This same behavior happens even after a complete Factory data reset. And I know my network connection is solid and strong; every other app and streaming service working fine.

And so I ask: anyone else with the X750D (or X700D or X800D,) are you experiencing the same? Is there some other "trick" to get Android TV to successfully check for updates, even when one might not be pending?

Streaming apps still missing from Android TV (US-based)

Android TV has made a lot of progress over the past year in terms of the streaming apps it offers, although it hasn't yet caught up with Roku, Amazon Fire TV or Apple TV. Most of the major apps, like Netflix, Hulu, Sling TV, HBO NOW, HBO Go, Showtime, Showtime Anytime, Starz, CBS All Access, Fox NOW, PBS, PBS Kids, Disney Movies Anywhere, MLB.tv, NBA Game Time, WWE Network, and Plex (among others) are available. Below is a list of those apps from various standalone services as well as traditional TV networks that still do not have a native Android TV app available (although many do have a mobile app compatible with Chromecast/Google Cast).

Please let me know if you have any corrections or additions to make. I have only included here apps that are available on at least one TV-connected streaming platform.

standalone apps/services

  • Amazon Video (currently only on certain smart TVs including Sony Bravia and Philips)
  • Vudu (currently only on Nvidia Shield TV)
  • FandangoNow
  • PlayStation Vue
  • NFL Game Pass
  • NHL.TV
  • Lifetime Movie Club
  • Seeso
  • Acorn TV
  • Sundance Now Doc Club
  • Dove Channel
  • Smithsonian Earth
  • Tribeca Shortlist

pay TV provider authenticated apps

  • ABC
  • NBC
  • The CW
  • ABC News
  • CNNgo (Android TV app noted as “coming soon” in April 2016)
  • Comedy Central
  • USA NOW
  • Discovery GO
  • Freeform
  • Syfy Now
  • Lifetime
  • Adult Swim
  • Bravo Now
  • Spike
