YouTube and Photos & Video not syncing on Nvidia Shield TV

So I just picked up a new Nvidia Shield TV and have been playing around trying to get everything figured out. I've been banging my head against the wall trying to get apps to sync correctly.

I logged in with my Google account and right off the bat I noticed that YouTube was showing me recommended videos from channels I subscribe to, but when I scroll down to subscriptions, the menu is completely empty. I also noticed my playlists are not populating as well. The sections are there, they're just empty.

Google Play and Music both appear to work correctly, but the Photos & Videos app is a complete mistery to me. All I see when I open the app is a black screen. There's a slide-in menu on the left with a few options as well, but it's not actually pulling down my content.

Initially I thought it would just take some time and figured I'd give it a day or two to sync up. It's been 3 days since I set it up and logged in and these two apps are still void of my content. Any ideas?

Nexus Player connectivity problems

Recently obtained a Nexus Player and having some connectivity issues with it.

On WiFi it works, except that if it sits idle for a few hours, it will loose connection after being woken up. This occurs on both the 2Ghz and 5Ghz bands. Only way to fix it is a reboot. Turning the WiFi on/off, or even reconnecting to my WiFi does not fix it. My router is only about 8 feet away. It shows the Nexus Player with a -55dB signal on 2Ghz, and -65dB on 5Ghz, so basically a excellent signal.

So I thought I would try a USB to ethernet adapter. I found a supported one with a Axis chipset. This solved the connection loss after sleep issue, but introduced a new problem.. Streaming apps will randomly loose connection. Youtube is particularly bad about this.

My router is a Asus RT-AC66U. Internet connection is 1000Mbps/500Mbps.

I have a Shield TV in another room that does not have issues like this at all on either WiFi or Ethernet...

Has anyone found fixes or workarounds for pro on 6.0?

Edit: Nvidia shield TV, sorry.

I have the 16gb and the pro. 16gb can handle external hdds, while the pro shows as "usb3002" and can't access media.

Likewise, if the pro goes into standby (via CEC or over time) it needs to be physically unplugged to start back up.

I've read a few others had issues a few days ago, but haven't seen much since. Was there a workaround for either issue I missed?

Noob questions

Im thinking about getting an Android TV box. Im not sure how it works in terms of being able to watch any movie you want, does it have nothing to do with the box and all to do with the apps that could be taken down rendering the box a paper weight?

Also I have a big home theater and I and if I can't watch 1080p with a bitrate at least as good as netflix on a console level, and 5.1 surround on most movies, I will probably not be going for it, as i've invested too much money in my set-up to watch sub par quality. Does quality also depend on the quality of the box itself?

Edit: I've also seen a lot of big "4k" stickers slapped on ads for these boxes on ebay and amazon, is that BS?

Why is Google making it so hard to get Android TV?

In Canada anyway... They have completely removed the Nexus Player from Canada. The only other option is the Nvidia Shield TV but that's also very hard to find here. Roku and Apple TV are everywhere. Does Google just not care?

Sony XBR and Casting

New owner of XBR-65X850C and have a question about casting and see if other XBR owners see this issue.

I am able to cast YT, Play Music but I am not able to cast WatchESPN, Spotify. Is this the expected functionality? Is the casting feature in Android TV not have the same functionality as a Chromecast?

Old android phone as full fledged Android TV remote

I have a Nexus Player. NP remote is... okay but I want more from it. I want a remote that has a 3.5mm plug and receives audio, is rechargeable, has a keyboard (a good plus) and can change volume.

Shield TV remote is good; but at 50 bucks and no keyboard, no thanks. I discovered Rii K25A in Amazon; perfect but it's nearly $40.

I have a rooted Nexus S. Everything is still working well. I'm thinking what apps do I need to put in this old phone so it can be a full fledged Android TV remote.

Edit: added the need of volume controls

Avoiding MLB.TV blackouts

Has anyone had success getting around MLB.TV blackouts on Android TV? In the past I've used a Kodi/XBMC plugin with unblock-us so I could watch the Braves in Charlotte, but I really like the native app for Android TV and would prefer to use that. I tried the guide in the link last year on my Fire TV but didn't have any success. I'm going to play around with it again today on my Shield TV to see if I can get it working, but I was just wondering if anyone had any pro tips.

Using Telecom TV apps on my android TV box

I haven't had luck doing this - they throw an error stating screen mirroring not supported or hdmi out not allowed.

Part of the value prop of buying this device was to get access to my shows thru the app as I can on my tablet.

Any workarounds to trick the app? I am sure they are doing this to protect box rentals / sales, wondering if anyone has beat it.

I am trying to use bell fibetv on an H8.

Thx in advance for any advice.

M8S IP Address issue

I'm trying to configure my M8s to have a static IP address and it's... a bit of a nightmare, honestly. So I'll just walk you through WTF I've tried so far, and... maybe someone around here can help.

First, I'm doing this wired, not wireless.

First thing I did, open my router and find the device via the IP address. The device already told me its IP address, so I just grabbed it from the connected devices list on the router, and set it to be static. Restart, and everything should be good, right? Um, well no.

So now the router's showing the M8S as still connected to the static defined IP address, but the actual M8S device says it's connected through a different IP address... It's also now showing it has a different MAC address. Every time I try this, the MAC address of the M8S changes. Further, I check the device itself, both on the hardware and on the software settings, and it shows a completely different MAC address from everything else.

Okay, let's try something different. I define the MAC address the M8S says the ethernet port should have a static IP address. Now it shows up in the device list on the router, except now the M8S is showing yet another IP address, and my router says the device using that IP address has a still different MAC address.

Okay, maybe this is a bad way to go about it. Let's open up the M8S's configurations and set it through the android software. So I open up the ethernet settings on the M8S. I switch it over to static IP from DHCP. I set up its IP address, Subnet, DNS, Gateway... Should be gravy now, right?

SUCCESS! It's now getting the static IP address I've assigned. The router is seeing it show up properly. It's even now showing up with the MAC address the device keeps telling me it should have. Everything is gravy. I go about my business...

And then notice that, while I'm connected to the network with full SMB access, I can't get out of the network. I know I've got the IP address, gateway, subnet, DNS, etc all set up right. I even double and triple-checked online. Everything should be working.

And yet, for some reason, I do not have access to the internet.

I even downloaded an application to show me what my settings were when auto-connected through DHCP. I wrote them down, and copied them into the static IP setup.

I went into wifi settings and set the static IP address up there, using the exact same settings. That works fine. Address is static, and I can communicate outside the network.

But so long as my IP address is set to static via the device I can not call out. And if I set my IP address as static any other way, it refuses to go static.

I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out WTF to do here.

Is it possible to install Android on older Sony Tv?

I bought a Sany Bravia KDL-60w855b Smart TV last year, its a good tv, but there is nothing smart about it, its just a very primitive software to install some crappy apps.

And then later Sony released new Android Bravia Tv, Im kind if pissed to be honest, should have waited a bit, didnt do my research. But anyway, is it possible to mod or do some shenanigans to manually put Android onto it? Or Im better of just buying some cheapo android box and call it a day?

I didnt find any mod related forums on this model or anything. Any suggestions or help is appreciated!

Protip: HDHomeRun View has a secret settings menu

While in HDHomeRun View, press the Play/Pause button 5-10 times.

What you can do here:

  • Change the UI in View. Online Beta will enable showing what show is next in the guide with a right press.
  • Enable/Disable hardware encoding
  • Transcode to H.264/AVC - When I changed this from "Mobile" to "Heavy" on my Shield, I saw an improvement in picture quality in both View and Live Channels.

edit: Trick is, the Shield remote doesn't have a Play/Pause button. I used a keyboard.

It doesn't lower it or raise it but it just really annoying when I have to start the movie back up. Has this happened to anyone and do you know how to fix?

Sony Bravia 3D Tv 2015

Hi just bought the TV mentioned in the title. Blown away by android tv. Installed Kodi and loving the speed and apps without having to connect my laptop.

My the only problem is 3D. On this tv the option for 3d only comes up for certain apps and modes. So far it only becomes an options for any of the hdmi ports and the default video app.

The default video app support limited formats though.

Wondering if any one else with this tv has found an app that can play usb videos or is kodi like that supports 3d?

Any help is much appreciated!

VLC 2.0 Beta (1.9.0) makes VLC more Kodi-like. It now connects to SMB, NFS, FTP, and SFTP shares, includes favorites, supports playlists, rewritten controls, history, notification, an improved Android TV UI and the option to use the Android TV UI on all devices.

VLC on Android 2.0.0 Beta (1.9.0)

2.0 introduces a large number of features, notably network disk browsing (Windows shares, UPnP, NFS, FTP, SFTP...), favorite folders and URLs, video playlists, rewritten notifications and control and a rewritten history.

It is also a merge of Android TV and Android versions, so that every device can optionally get the Android TV interface. The TV interface has been improved quite a bit too.

Finally, it should be faster to decode and playback all video types.

How do we convince developers to port/support their games to Android TV?

There are some great new games that have come out that would be great on Android TV. I know that there needs to be install base to generate revenue, etc. Right now I'm looking at Downwell specifically. The game already has controller support and works on Steam. I would love to see this on Android TV. It seems to be a perfect fit. How do we as a community voice our desire for Android TV without brigading the app reviews that will get a dev's attention?
