Nexus Player - voice search is always wrong?

Voice search is always either laggy, or it guesses wrong. "Samsung Galaxy" becomes "simple gal" or just "the". The beep sounds that play when searching are extremely late too. Is this how it is for everyone?

Will Nvidia eventually lock the bootloader on the Shield TV like Amazon did on the Fire TV?

Hi everyone.

I just ordered the Nvidia Shield TV and I am not sure if I should try rooting it right away or not. On the other hand, I am asking myself if I take a risk if I don't do it. What if Nvidia will decide to lock the bootloader like Amazon did on the Fire TV or do whatever other thing possible in order to block the rooting of its devices? Although I'm hoping that Nvidia does not see this as a good marketing move, it's still a question that comes to mind.

Analysing both options (to root or not to root) I would chose not to root at the moment as I can sideload apps, use different launchers and I don't intend using a custom ROM that is not made for TV (for now).

What do you think? Will Nvidia choose to sail the Amazon river and block rooting methods or not?

What are the main advantages of rooting? What about disadvantages (if any)?

What are the main advantages of not rooting (if any)? What about disadvantages?

Thanks.

[Shield TV] Nvidia has GeForce Now games sale (50-75% off)

It's not a lot of games, but they've put both the Saints Row and Metro games on sale, ranging from 50-75% off. Both the Metro games are $5 USD, Saints Row IV is $4.50 USD, and Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell is $7.50 USD.

Shield or Roku 4

I bought the Shield during the $150 deal, but it's unopened as of yet. I've been struggling to decide what device would work better for me. The Shield is definitely more powerful, but the gaming functionality might not be so important to me. Especially since my PC has an AMD video card in it.

So that leaves me with content. Roku is going to win here, right? Would there be any reasons that the Shield is still the better media box for me?

Thanks!

Apps you have wanted for Android TV?

Hello everyone, so I have been an app developer for a few months now and just replaced my nexus player with a shield TV. I am looking into possibly making an app for Android TV but I want to hear some ideas. So I have come to y'all, what utility or tool apps have you wished Android tv had? Thanks everyone

New Shield TV owner- Where's the apps?

I just got a shield yesterday and after tinkering with it for a few hours I'm a bit disappointed. I'm coming from an Apple TV 3rd gen. It's not the most powerful hardware but it does have many streaming service and AirPlay, which is great for getting video from my computer to the screen easily.

The shield has crazy powerful hardware but is severely lacking in streaming services. I primarily bought it because I thought it would be a full replacement for my Apple TV and more but it doesn't seem like it's ready.

How long has it taken you guys to get new streaming apps? Are they added monthly? Do you have any solutions for adding apps that are on android via sideloading that don't have touch emulation? I'd love to get Disney channel and adult swim working.

DNS

Hi,

Been Googling for a bit now, nothings really come up though.

Recently bought a Shield TV - I'm based in the UK, my partner loves watching Bones which is only available on the US Netflix. I have changed the DNS to make it work by changing my network settings to manual.

Is there an app which makes switching easier? For example: having 2 sets of manual settings? It doesn't remember my manual settings after reverting to auto.

Any apps that I could sideload?

Cheers!

Edit: Thanks for the help guys, I'll look into them!

Do Nvidia Shield TV region restricted apps show on the home screen once installed?

Hi,

The question is pretty straight forward. I have read that apps that are not officially compatible with the Shield TV can be sideloaded but will not show on the home screen. What about region restricted apps that ARE compatible with the Shield like, for example, the BBC iPlayer? If the BBC iPlayer is sideloaded on a device located in the US, will it stay hidden too?

Thanks

Shield TV vs Fire TV 4K?

Hey all, cord cutter here; I stream 100% of the content I watch. That includes YouTube, NetFlix, Prime Video, and other...sources all from a PC. I want to replace that PC with something smaller. I know both can run Kodi (sideloading on the Fire), and both can support Prime Video, Pandora, NetFlix, etc. But the Play Store isn't available on Amazon devices. I don't care about apps, and will likely not be gaming on it, but having access to the Play Store's movies and series would be helpful.

Has anyone here used both devices? With the BF pricing the Shield TV is twice the cost of the Fire TV ($75 vs $150). Knowing full well that I'm in an Android TV sub, is the Shield worth the cost difference?

Netflix on Nvidia Shield and DNS behaviour question

Hi everyone. I'm thinking of buying the Shield. I now use Netflix on Amazon fire TV along with Unotelly DNS for changing Netfix regions so I have a few questions:

  1. Does the Shield allow DNS to be changed in the settings or it can only be done from the router directly? If so, I have to buy an extra router to install between my ISP gateway/router (cannot replace) and the Shield for DNS changing purposes.

  2. Is the Netflix app forcing Google DNS even if a different DNS is already set by the user? I so, I would need to buy a router with DD-WRT, that can reroute Google traffic instead of blocking it completely and make the app work according to the bellow article:

http://help.unotelly.com/support/solutions/articles/199318-netflix-3-7-2-not-working-on-android

Thank you.

Shield TV + Remote bundle?

I braved black friday best buy tonight and came home with a shiny new shield TV for $150. When I got home I was alarmed to see that it didn't come with the remote - only the gamepad. The nvidia site says the black friday sale includes a remote and lists best buy as a participating retailer. Should I just go back with my receipt and the nvidia ad in the morning and see if they have the remotes? Is it a separate SKU? I didn't see it on the shelf with the shield TV itself.

Edit, got my remote this morning with no hassle. They're shelved nearby with things like replacement fire and roku remotes. My best buy still head plenty this morning.

Nvidia Shield Question.

I currently have Plex Media Server installed on my PC and use my Chromecast to view my content on my TV. If I were to purchase the Nvidia Shield box and connect an external hard drive with my media, would I be able to view my content this way, perhaps using an app such as Kodi?

I have been trying to find a direct answer to my query but so far I am still at a loss and am wondering if anyone with a Nvidia Shield box can confirm this for me.

I do like the Plex UI but I believe it can't serve up content without the PMS and I have heard that there are Plex skins for Kodi anyway.

Hoping for some clarification.

Two Shields under same account...

With black Friday around the corner, I'm debating on getting another Shield for my son's room. Would there be any issues using it under my play account / GeForce Now account? In the beginning I'll just be using it to stream videos via the many services available... But my son is starting to be more interested in gaming, so I thought about either getting another Shield, or putting my old ps3 in his room... But there is also the factor of power consumption when I bring the Ps3 in on the equation... Any thoughts?

Fox Sports Go

Has anyone managed to get Fox Sports Go to work on their Android TV? I'm using the Shield TV and when I go to log in (TWC) the option isn't there. So I scroll to the bottom under more tv providers, gives me the option to input my zip code and when I select TWC it says to go back to main menu to re select it. Problem is, the options isn't there.
