APK2TV - Takes Android apps and Makes them Android TV compatible (to some degree)

PSA Kodi is comparable to a second app store

A lot of people are worried about the abysmal number of apps for Android TV and they're right. But at the same time i want to remember everyone that Kodi exists and work beautifully on the Shield. So if you have no problem troubleshooting a little bit to make things work you can use hundreds of addons instead of apps. I have had some problems lately with the Nba app and discovered an Nba addon which works better than the app. I've seen 2 or 3 Amazon Video addons too. Obviously they're user-developed so functionality is not guaranteed, but the number of broken or abandoned addons is very little and repositories are kept tightly clean. Lastly the kodi community is very active and if you have problems you can look up the wiki or write on the forum.

I miss Google TV

So I had a Logitech Revue, which worked for years and was great. I never had to use the guide because I could search whatever channel something was on like the Ravens or Caps or Archer. But my friends broke my keyboard and I never really used it again.

I saw the deal for the Nvidia Shield, and I see that it doesn't have an hdmi input. It's more like an Apple TV correct? With apps for television? What's the best box to get that is more like the Revue? One that can show my cable box video. I'm not ready to cut the cord yet.

EDIT: So I manned up and did the deal for a Nvidia Shield and remote. I also bought the HDHOMERUN DVR so I can get my live tv. I can't wait till it gets here!

Clarification on Android/AndroidTV (NHL package)

I'd prefer to purchase an Shield as opposed to a Roku player but one mandatory feature for me would be including the NHL Center Ice package. I know the Roku environment has it but I only see it listed as "available for Android" and not explicitly "Android TV"

Is anyone able to clarify for me if a Shield can run the NHL Center Ice package app?

Custom Homescreen on M8 Possible?

I have an Android M8 box and I am wondering what method I should follow to create a completely custom interface? I use Nova Launcher on my [rooted] phone and have customized all the icons and selected certain widgets so the interface is clean and uniform. I would like to do something similar on the M8 so I only have icons for apps I use (Netflix, Kodi, Youtube, Chrome) and maybe have a few widgets on the homescreen, such as local weather, maybe a “new movie releases” slideshow widget if I can find one. I know Nova Launcher will work for a 10-ft-display but if there are better options, I wouldn’t mind.

It appears to me that the M8 is already running a launcher on top of the base OS. I would prefer not to take the device offline for more an afternoon/evening while tinkering with different launchers and ROMs since my family uses it every day. I just want to streamline to interface and make it more aesthetic to my preferences but without bricking the device.

Are there any tutorials or basic steps I can follow for something like this?

Thanks!

Live Channels app - Explained

I know we have a lot of new people here with the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales and I know the Live Channels app is somewhat misleading/not clear. I made a post recently that explains it so I thought I'd copy/paste here for you all:

Live Channels is a system level app that "listens" for apps that have video streams (not necessarily live tv, just ongoing streams) and have made themselves available as "sources." If an app like this is installed, when you open Live Channels, you will be able to add said app as a source and whatever channels that app has made available will be integrated into the Live Channels tv guide. A good app to test this with is Pluto TV. Install the app, then open Live Channels and you'll see what I mean.

Now obviously with only one source this is pointless; why not just open the source's app? The idea is to aggregate sources into one app. I think right now, most people only use 2 apps: Pluto TV and HdHomerun extend. HdHomerun extend is a tv tuner that you connect to an OTA antenna and then your router. The tuner takes the signals, processes them and then broadcasts them over your network. If you have the HDHomerun app installed, you can then view your broadcast channels via the shield instead of changing inputs. You could then choose HDHomerun as a source for Live Channels and have your broadcasts channels aggregated in the same location as all your Pluto TV channels. See what I'm getting at here?

There are a few other great candidates that would be great for Live Channels. Imagine if Sling TV implemented it. You could have your 20+ Sling channels in the same location as your 20+ broadcast channels and as your 100+ PlutoTV channels. Crackle recently implemented a channel like interface; imagine if they got on board. There is a lot of potential with the Live Channels app to aggregate from multiple content providers and give us the traditional "channel surfing" experience.

Short guide:

  • Install PlutoTV to force the Live Channels app to appear on the home screen and then you can play around a bit.

  • If you want to get free OTA channels in the Live Channels app, you can buy an HD Antenna and an HDHomerun Extend. You'll connect antenna -> homerun -> router, install the HDHomerun View app and Live Channels will identify said app as a source.

  • Alternatively, you can get an HDHomerun Prime if you still have cable and want to integrate your paid cable channels in the Live Channels app.

At present there is not a lot of support for Live Channels. Google has stated they want to grow this feature (it is a hugely unique feature - no other platform is doing it). Contact other potential sources! SlingTV is a prime candidate. Contact them if you want integration.

Post if you have any questions and I'll help as best I can.

Also, plug for /r/cordcutters as this feature is quite conducive to cordcutting

Sony Android TV stability issues

Evening everyone,

Just purchased a new 4k Sony TV, which has a built in android TV system.

While the features and flexibility of the TV are great, one of the problems with the TV is that some of the core apps crash on quite a regular basis, Play services, android TV display, and some other ones. I've run updates for the TV, and there is no other ones available to install.

I work in IT, and am happy to fiddle with things, but I'd rather not fiddle in a way that might turn my new TV into a decorative wall panel.

Is it possible to install a "base rom" similar to android phones? can I replace some of the default apps with more stable ones? any other options at all?

If you need or want any more details, please let me know.

Cheers :)

Need help with Sony 4K Android TV

Hi all,

I hope this is ok to post here but i've been helping my parents (nearly retired) choose and set up their new TV. They love their new TV and it was on sale - it's a "Sony Bravia KD55X85" They're not quick adopting new technology but like the speech function in their android tablet, both the type and do "ok google" queries.

I'm having an issue with the speech search function on the homescreen of the TV... it doesn't stop listening:

At first I thought it was a remote issue or I was using it wrong, but the same query within the youtube app on android tv works perfectly:

I want to make the search feature work like the youtube speech search did. As they don't like all the menus on the TV and then they'll just not use any of the features (which they will like if they can use them easily)

Can anyone help?

Shield TV-any luck with this custom rom? Link in Comments

I've heard this is the way you want to experience Android TV if you want it at its finest. the big issue with it, i hear, is the loss of the functionality of the shield controller(completely) but a dongled 360 stick can solve the issue flawlessly. my question is once set up on this setup, will my 360 controller turn on my 360 at random, or will it effectively become a shield device?

nVidia Shield TV

Hey everyone,

I thought I would share my little project. I love my shield TV, it's tiny, powerful and playing Fallout 4 over my network to my TV is seamless, but I'm not a fan of the smallness of the box.

So what I did was take a broken Atari 2600, removed the innards (but kept the switches although I did have to snap the board), took two of the back columns out and the shield fits in it lovely.

Space invaders just fills the void :) now it's made it better 178% I feel!

Equivalent to Chromecast idle Pictures on Android TV?

Hi,

Just got myself a Shield ATV, waiting for it to be delivered now. It will be by first ATV device.

I've had a Chromecast for over 2 years and have loved it, but I know that Android TV has the cast functionality built in, so I'll probably be retiring the Chromecast to my parent's house. But aside from casting apps and webpages, one of the things I really enjoy about the Chromecast is the beautiful looping pictures that it shows on the screen when idle.

Is there an equivalent to this on Android TV? I'd hate to lose seeing all those beautiful pictures from Google+ and NASA and other sources, yet it seems ridiculous to keep the Chromecast just for that.
