Expected Lifetime of Android TVs?

I'm finally in a position to replace my 15-year-old "HD Ready" TV with something a bit more modern, and it seems like the first choice I have to make is "what smart platform do you want?". Android TV looks pretty good, but my main concern is that a couple of years from now the OEM and Google will have dropped support and I'm going to need to buy a new TV again.

Am I worrying about nothing? Has Google or any of the OEMs actually committed to support periods?

Android Q + Android TV?

So I'm thinking about getting an Nvidia Shield TV which I think would be perfect for me and I know it's getting Android Pie but I was just wondering if maybe the Shield will be getting Q or if there are any other know Android TV boxes that are known to be getting Android Q later this year.

Thanks!

installing non android tv supported app from google play store

Hi guys,

i just bought my first android tv box (Xiaomi mi box S). but I wanted to know if there's any way to install this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vidio.android&hl=en. this app is like a local live tv streaming app (like youtube tv but for Indonesian content). How can I install it? I saw there's some downloadable apks on the internet, but i hate the perks of having to redownload the apks when a new major update is available. is there a way to install the app to my android tv while still getting auto updates from google play store?

Thanks

Blu-Ray quality MKV stutters and freezes when played through my original Mi Box

I'm trying to play a MKV file (blu-ray quality rip) through my mi box (original) and it stutters, and switches files. I was originally running the file from an external hard drive-->usb hub-->Mi Box--> with VLC. I've since tried using kodi, as well as directly running from the flashdrive-->Mi box. Nothing seems to work. Is the simple answer Nvidia Shield, or is there possibly something else that I'm missing? Thanks for any thoughts.

Upgrading my cheap Android box

I currently have a cheap MXPro which has served me well overall, but it doesn't boot sometimes and have to take plug out to restart, even this usually takes a few attempts. It's also generally slowing down, so I want to upgrade to a dependable box mainly for streaming.

I did purchase this Leelbox but despite the apparently excellent specs, the video when streaming is choppy on all apps tested and displays worse than my MXPro! Very disappointing

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07MJPGPTX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I now recognise these are labelled as the cheap Chinese boxes not optimised for TV which I've noticed people recommend avoiding.

I've come across "real" Android TV boxes below.

Couple of general queries - 1) Would I need to sideload all apps (eg Showbox)? 2) Will my Rii keyboard work with these?

- The Nvidia Shield which is too pricey and I don't need it for gaming. If it really is THE absolute must buy I could extend to that price range.

- The Mi Box - have seen people complain with Wifi issues and also booting it up. This box looked like the answer until I saw these issues.

- MeCool M8S Pro L - Is this an Android TV box or Android box or somewhere in between? Not sure based on this review:

https://hometheatrelife.com/mecool-m8s-pro-l-review/?&ampcf=1

Is there anything on https://www.entertainmentbox.com/ which is good or are these all similar to the Chinese boxes not optimised for TV? The X96 Max looks good...

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Why are there so few Android TV boxes on the market?

Comparing to how many Android smartphones and tablets are out there vs like, less than 10 TV boxes? I'm just curious what's going on. Especially if someone wants a more powerful device, then Shield is his only option.

New Android TV capable of less than my OG Chromecast.

I bought an Android TV. Why buy a Chromecast ultra and a new TV, I thought. It seems though that the TV has Built in Chromecast AND Android TV as though they are seperate entities. Meaning, if I run the YouTube app from the TVs remote my Google Home Mini cannot pause/play/stop etc but if I ask Google to play something on YouTube it will stream it and have control over playback

On top of that, after the first day the built in chromecast could no longer be accesed to stream netflix frome the assistant althought it does work from an app. the first couple of times I tried it was able to steam Netflix, now the the assistant read out the confirmation line and immediately afterwards says that it cannot do that and to try from a smart device.

My Android TV works less well than the Chromecast it replaced. Is this the Android experiece or is there something that I can do to make this work as expected?

Edit: some clarifications in bold.

Further clarification: can Google assistant control playback on Android TV?

Installed app not present in app folder

Hi there, I successfully installed a 3rd party app in my android tv (not downloaded from the play store). The app works well, however it doesn’t show up in the app folder nor I can select it as favourite. In order to launch it I am forced to go in settings-apps and do it from there. Does anyone know how I can fix this. Thanks!!

TCL U49P6046 issues

There are 2 issues with my android tv. The first one is wifi. I' ve changed my ISP and the previous wifi network is still shown in wifi settings. I' ve forgotten it but it still shows there when I restart the tv. Also it forgets automatically my current wifi and I have to enter password every time I turn on the tv.

The other issue is concerning turning the tv on. Sometimes the tv can' t be turned on so I need to unplug it from the power source. Then I can turn the tv on normaly. The remote controler is not the cause, that's for sure.

I' m trying to avoid doing factory reset. Will do it if it' s the only solution. If anyone has some solutions, I would be grateful.

I have an amp setup with my ATV that uses IR for volume. I bought the G20 Remote because I saw it has learning IR but was disappointed to realize it only does learning IR for the power key.
