Mi Box problems = considering a Shield

So I'm considering dumping my MiBox (it's been a good run - got it on day one - but with the bugs from the upgrade it's nearly unusable) and looking into a Shield.

My main concern is the lack of IR support for use with an IR universal remote.

How are you getting around this, if you are? I don't want to have to buy a new universal remote too, on top of buying a new AndroidTV media box.

Any other recommendations to replace my MiBox?

FDroid Fails to enable installing unknown sources?

So I have the Xiaomi Mi Box, and it's updated to Oreo... But when trying to use the FDroid app... I can't install anything. Other apps I have been able to enable the unknown sources privledge but FDroid won't show up there... What could possibly be wrong? And while I'm at it, what app should I use to move about my screen with a mouse cursor? Because I tried my bluetooth mouse and it didn't work, so I'm wondering if there a, free please, app to switch modes to mouse mode for the remote?

EDIT: Solved, just needed the reboot

Best bang for buck with true 4k? Netflix etc.

New to the whole Android TV side of the operating system and I'm looking to upgrade to a true tv box that can play back 4k. Most importantly Netflix. I've heard mixed things about mibox, I'm completely lost at the very tech stuff. I don't care about audio or all the bells and whistles. I have a beelink box right now but it does not play 4k and it's not true Android TV.

Looking forward to recommendations. Thank you

Clueless about buying something Smart. Captain please help.

Hi there,

I am thinking of getting a smart stick or box for my dumb tv for my rented apartment. So here I will tell you in detail my conundrum and why I think only Reddit can help me:

  1. I am an expat so I keep moving and wish to use the device everywhere.
  2. I have Amazon Prime Subscription and wish to use Netflix too.
  3. I want to sideload apps and run Plex too.
  4. I want a way to watch stuff from My Passport HDD.
  5. Prefer a way to have more storage than 8GB.
  6. Do not want too many features but want stability and speed.
  7. Casting is not much of a preference but seamless 1080 is. No 4K TV.
  8. Shield = No, budget limitations and size.
  9. Want something that can stand the test of time, atleast an year or two.
  10. Prefer something like Android TV interface or Fire UI which is close to stock.
  11. 50Mbps connection at home.
  12. Do not prefer many updates but stability.

This is it. Should I wait? Is there any chance of a better device coming soon?

Suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks. P.S I want the international version.

Casting Never Works

Hello Internet,

Now this is probably already talked about, but I don't understand a lot of the technical words in the bugs in the Mi Box Oreo update,

But is anyone else having horrible casting reliability, as well as horrible YouTube streaming, and white dots that look like white noise in the background of the video in all parts of the OS?

If so, how can I fix this, and if not, any ideas when it will be fixed?

Controlling Android TV from Google Home Mini

So I just bought a TCL TV with Android TV built in, which has been excellent so far. However, I'm unable to use my Google Home Mini to play content with the built-in Chromecast. When I ask it to do stuff (play music on Spotify, play content on Netflix) it says that it can't find the device name on the network. Manually casting to the TV works fine. When I plug in my old Chromecast to the HDMI port the Home Mini has no trouble casting to that either. Is this a known limitation of Android TV/TCL or have I configured something wrong?

Is there anything cheaper than a Shield that can do HD audio and play 4K movies from an external HDD?

I was looking into getting a Mi Box but I am seeing that people are having trouble with external HDD's (mine is a 2TB NTFS). I just need something that can play my 4K MKV files with DTS-HD MA audio.

Lag when casting desktop to TV with Google Chrome's cast function

Hi guys, I need some help.

I'm having a lag problem when I'm trying to cast my desktop's screen over the Wi-Fi to my Sony Android TV with built-in Chromecast. The mouse and inputs are lagging on the TV for like half a second, which is really frustrating for any type of gaming. I've tried switching the TV from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz Wi-Fi, but it did not help. The distance between the TV and the PC is less than a meter, so that should not be a problem, I guess. Are there some picture settings or something similar that needs to be meddled with for the cast to work smooth?

Thanks.

Mi Box - USB Pendrive NTFS not working after update

Hi guys!

I have a Xiaomi Mi Box that I bought from China (I'm from Brazil). Recently they did an update to Android 8.0, which has impacted " my TV Box. Because after this update, the USB drive is no longer recognized. I've already tried to format the drive, I've updated the system (It has an update which should fix this bug, but didn't worked at all). When I do format the pendrive on the Mi Box, my PC don't recognizes it, and them I have to format again, and when I put it into the box again, it doesn't recognizes there, so I have to format again. Though it did work formating in FAT32, but I can only copy files with less then 4GB. Anyone have any idea to make it work again? Like before the update? PS: The USB(Pendrive) capacity is 32Giga

Looking Forward,

Rafael Matos
