Best HDR content to show the difference between HDR and NON HDR?

Just got a new 4K HDR set and a Shield and was looking for what movies/shows use HDR the best where you can really tell the difference between it and non HDR content. Some of the stuff on Netflix/Amazon on the Shield I couldn't really tell it was in HDR even though they had the HDR label and the TV popped up that it was HDR. Have Kodi too for stuff not available on Netflix or Amazon.

4K Youtube on Sony Model X800D no more?

I've had this TV for a little under a year and the youtube app used to have a the little gear icon that you see in youtube's normal web layout. You could switch resolutions on the fly with that option on the TV, even up to 2160p. But a recent update looks like it dialed it back completely. Now the app mirrors the app on PS4. The gear is gone and videos that are supposed to play in 4K only say HD when you look at the title card during a video. You can go to the "stats for nerds" option in the app and it looks like the resolution is scaled back to HD as well.

Curious if anyone else has noticed this. Did Sony or Android just eliminate 4K playback completely with this update? Is there a way to scale the app back to the previous iteration so I can get proper 2160p? It could be that I'm missing something, but I can't find any other way to explain it.

Thanks.

Is there any hack that will keep a Bravia TV connected to WiFi after you turn it off?

Whenever I turn on my Bravia running Nougat, it takes a little while to reconnect to WiFi. So I end up waiting a couple of minutes to access any network-based service -- YouTube, Netflix, etc. Hard-wiring via ethernet solves the problem, but I'm wondering is there any software-based solution to keep WiFi connected so there's no delay when powering on? Thanks!

Nougat Gamepad Support

Hey Friendos. Wondering whether there is a gamepad or set of gamepads that are supported natively by Nougat. Specifically I have a Nebula Capsule (Android 7.1) and I’m trying to connect a couple gamepads to it for simple gaming with friends. Bluetooth preferred if possible. I’ve already tried and failed to get a DS4 working properly. Any advice appreciated!

On Air vs Live Channels

So my Sony TV just updated to Android 7.0 (Nougat?) and now whenever I change input sources (Say from PS4 to Apple TV, or from Apple TV to my Cable Box) a little prompt comes up asking:

"Open with live channels: just once always

use a different app: on air"

The thing is: I have no idea what the difference is, or which I should be picking, and I don't want to pick the wrong option and never be able to go back.

I can't find any documentation online so if anyone could help me out that'd be amazing!

Any decent remote options besides going with a Harmony setup?

Currently I use my actual TV's remote because it has some decent CEC functionality. Power, 4 directional arrows, select, back and Volume. No home though.

I would love a remote that can do all that + home but not sure if anything like that exists.

4K HDR playback on SONY KD65XD7505?

I have really bad internet at home so I cannot stream movies from Google Play Movies & TV. I want to watch show and movies nevertheless so I download movies. The format is an .mkv file. Is there a way to playback those kind of files directly through AndroidTV? Will this support HDR and 4K resolution?

I can connect my MacBook as well and use VLC or IINA to play those files too, but do I get HDR over HDMI?

Thank you for answering and helping me out. Cheers

Anyone have kodi look choppy when mi box wakes up?

If i let my mi box go up sleep on it's own with kodi open, when it wakes up the Kodi UIs are all chopped up. If i put it to sleep manually and wake it right back up it fixes it.

Anything suggestions? Btw, when it happens it only affects Kodi. Android home screen is fine.

Backdrop - Android TV vs Chromecast (default screen)

In case your not sure what backdrop is, its the home screen that that shows random pictures or pictures from Google Photos with the time and temperature.

What's annoying is that on Chromecast screens have been updated over the last few months. The font is wider and easier to read from a distance, tells you room name, wifi connection, other details. Where as Android TV backdrop screen has only the time and weather. Which is totally fine but could you at least make it the wider new style so it easier to read.

I had thought it was because Nexus Player was not updated, but its now gotten the new 8.0 and its still the old side, plus a few months back the pulled backdrop coding and put it into the Play Store. Before anyone says the Nexus Player is old, I have 2 more brand new TV's with Android TV embedded.

Below is a link to pictures of what i'm talking about. https://imgur.com/a/uWfNS

Nexus Player worth it?

I saw some seemingly good deals for a refurb Nexus Player on eBay (as low as $35), and I’m curious if that’s a better deal than a Mi Box.

I’ve got a Shield TV and I love it, and I really like that the Nexus already has Oreo and the Assistant, but I know the hardware is old. I just need something for the bedroom, because my wife isn’t as happy with the Chromecast.

It’s annoyingly hard to stick with ATV given that there are basically just three options for a box — one that’s really old, one that doesn’t have good support, and one that’s expensive. But I love the integration with Google Home and Chromecast, so I’m a bit stuck. Fingers crossed there’s a Pixel TV at Google IO this year.

Help with Sony OLED A1 streaming network

Hi guys, just got this beast. very happy (if anyone wants to know) but i need some help. I am either a bit dissapointed with Android TV's limitations or im simply being too noob to not understand it well. Due to extreme cold here I did not get time to sit on my pc and properly setup Kodi or Plex. (i did install them, but tinkering them for best settings requieres a bit time). plex right now is saying on TV that it server is not powerful enough to stream. which is a bummer. My network is a wired gigabit by the way. so thats not a problem

as i just streamed a 65gb Batman BEgins 4k through the default video app. (I had a dlna server Serviio installed for previous tv).

so till winter goes, im stuck with this .

however i am unable to digest some very basic things.

please help:

  1. why cant i check what resolution is being played here? 2160p or 1080p (or 720p whatever). it was so easy to verify in my previous lg tv
  2. i cant check time on my latest smart tv...........
  3. i cannot change subtitles size, or color . i mean i understand basic videos is barebones but this is ridiculous?? stuck with oversized grey subtitles. lg smartshare default app was much more flexible.
  4. if i am stuck with these limitations . whats wrong with plex if anyone knows? as my network is perfect.

its too cold and i might have missed something. please ask and ill reply with info.

thanks for your time.
