NVIDIA Shield: Editing keyboard.xml, Includes_Furniture.xml and autostart SPMC on boot (Harmony issues etc.)

Hello!

I can happily say that I am really enjoying SPMC on my NVIDIA Shield. For the most part, it runs exactly how I want it to, and I really appreciate the work put into this.

There are just a couple of things, that I cannot seem to handle. Probably cause of my lack of skills - so I hope you can guide me on this. I have not rooted my NVIDIA Shield, basically I cannot even exactly comprehend yet what it means to do it, and how to. It seemed a bit hard, since I only have a Mac, and the guides are for Windows mostly. In general I just do not feel very "in control" of the files on my NVIDIA Shield, as most of my issues are probably just files I need to be able to edit/handle.

1 - My Logitech Harmony Elite is not playing too nicely with my NVIDIA Shield / SPMC yet. Basically, I have just set it up as a NVIDIA Shield Gaming Console, and running the standard setup for buttons. There is an annoying delay on button presses, and I feel like I am missing a lot out on a lot of button mapping configuration. I already tried to edit my keyboard.xml as per: https://github.com/koying/SPMC/wiki/Advanced-Keymap-for-NVIDIA-Shield-TV-and-Logitech-Harmony-Hub-Remote-Control , but I do not believe I succeeded. What I did is I copied the content into an XML file and changed the list as per this thread: #189 because I want my video to keep playing in the background when I press the back/exit button. Afterwards I put it on my Synology NAS, that I have mapped to my NVIDIA Shield and used the file manager to copy it to my special://profile/keymaps. It seems like the file eventually dissapeared and created a keyboard.xml.bak.0 file in place of it. Also I searched for solutions to the delay problem, and found that it is probably since I am running over IR right now, and need to set it up for bluetooth. I found so many different directions to go for this, so I completely lost track, and need guidance. Also my NVIDIA Shield does not turn off properly when using the "Off" button, as it seems. Sometimes I believe it has been continuing to play stuff while everything else is turned off.

Can you guys refer to me to a good guide to use for properly setting up my Harmony Elite? I really want to have it respond nice and quick(over bluetooth), and make full use of binds/bottons.

2 - In my skin, Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes, there is an annoying equalizer bar in the top right corner that I want to remove. As per the emby forums I need to open Includes_Furniture.xml and comment some lines.

Can you help me how to gain access to and edit this Includes_Furniture.xml file?

3 - I want SPMC to autostart when my Shield boots up. I did find this in the wiki: https://github.com/koying/SPMC/wiki/How-to-autostart-SPMC-on-boot But I believe I need my Shield to be rooted(again I do not exactly know the whole story of rooting) to this, and I currently have no external storage in Shield.

Can you help me with a more in depth guide how to achieve this? If I need to buy a SD card to get this solved - tell me and I will go ahead and grab one right away.

4 - Basically I just need more control with my Shield/SPMC from my Mac. How would you guys suggest that I go by accessing the "system files" of my Shield and SPMC from my Mac?

Spotify app skips songs, randomly restarts playback

So I got a Xiaomi Mi Box this week as an upgrade to my Chromecast and I'm liking it. But I have found that the Spotify app is really dodgy...

When I try to play some of my playlists it will completely skip some songs, others it will play up to a certain point and restart playback of the song up to that same point and start again... Other playlists work flawlessly.

Does anybody else have problems with the app?

AndroidTV Questions and Recommendations

Over Christmas I bought a Samsung Series 8 4K TV with true 10-bit HDR along with a Roku Premiere+.

While the TV is great, the Roku is horrible. It blinks continually and is unusable. After owning every Roku model since they started, I think I'm finally done with all of the bugs and am ready to try Android TV, but have some questions:

  1. As a cordcutter who enjoys watching the news, I'm curious what news networks live stream their stations via Android TV? Roku only has CNN and I'd prefer some variety for balance. Can I get Fox News, MSNBC, CNN or other live streaming via Android TV?

  2. I don't know much about these boxes. How important is Android 7 for Android TV or does it use different version numbers altogether?

  3. I'd really appreciate recommendations for a box that fits my needs - no gaming, supports 4K and 10 bit HDR, quality audio for my receiver, supports Kodi and Plex, supports Harmony remote (700 line is a must, hub is a plus if it does both). Budget is not an issue, I'd like to be future proof but at the same time not be loaded with features I don't use. My TV has an app for Amazon, so that's not particularly needed.

Thanks so much guys! Looking forward to joining you soon with a new box!

Is there anyway to show the pointer on my screen when I use the touchpad of Android TV Remote app (or any other app that does this)?

Android TV web browser with decent remote and voice input? (some reviews inside)

I have a Mi Box, and although I don't like to browse with my ATV, I find it useful at times. I was mainly looking for something that would allow me to use my remote as a pointer, and I tried the only two official ATV apps I found online (please let me know if there are others!).

1) TVWeb Browser for TV

PROS

  • The UI looks like Android TV.
  • I was able to do google searches using voice, which in itself is a lot compared to other apps I tried. I wasn't able to use voice input for other text fields, although the leanback keyboard does show up, or you if you have the Android TV Remote app you can use your phone.
  • At least Youtube (maybe others) videos work properly.

CONS

  • Voice input and speech to text limited to Google searches.
  • No way of setting pointer speed, so longer pages become annoying to scroll.
  • For some odd reason, pages are slow to load.
  • Personally, I don't like the pointer icon and would prefer the solid filled white (this one is transparent filled)
  • No easy way to go back to the Home menu.
  • No way of setting bookmarks or favorite websites.
  • Settings are a little weird: it seems you can add Categories to your left homescreen menu, which I imagine should be for quick access links, but I can't figure out how to add anything there besides the title. After I created one, I wasn't able to delete it.
  • Browsing history shows up on the main screen and it just looks bad. It would be more useful to have history as a link somewhere rather than showing up on the mainscreen. You can delete your history from the settings, but again it would be nice to have easy access to it.

2) Web Browser for Android TV

PROS

  • Homescreen has a fastdial, where you can toggle (not easily, see cons) between favorites and history
  • Pointer here is much easier to use! You can set pointer/scroll speed so it accelerates, and I prefer the pointer icon.
  • There's a setting for retrieve mobile/desktop page.

CONS

  • Although the homescreen UI is more functional than the other app, it is just ugly and primitive. Another annoyance is simple thing like toggling between favorites/bookmarks and history means you have to drag your pointer across the screen, whereas it would have been easy to make those as buttons like the other elements on the screen, where you just click once to select.
  • When you scroll down to the bottom of the page, you see an arrow, which would make you think that if you clicked it you'd scroll page down. Instead it just eliminates the accelerated pointer, so it actually all just slows you down.
  • The back button on your remote does nothing: I'd expect it at least to go pack a page, but it doesn't even do that. I'd also would have liked to have a double click back go to the homescreen.
  • No voice input.

Final considerations

Somethings are missing from both:

  • Zoom in/out would be useful depending on the pages, or the option to set a universal zoom for all webpages.
  • Both apps' devs seem to have thought about implementing things, but either they are incomplete or maybe they just don't work on my system, dunno.

Ideally I personally would want one app that has the best of both of these apps. By themselves, there's really no winner. I don't see the point of having to use my phone as an input device for keyboard, so I really like using the voice input of (1) even though (2) would be a winner for everything else (I could even live with the ugly homescreen).

I'd love to hear if anyone has anything else to add, or point me to a web browser for ATV that has a pointer input via remote and voice text input!

EDIT 1: Opera TV (sideloaded).

It definitely looks slicker. Still compared to these two, I don't find much improvement besides the looks of the UI. You can't change the homepage from the Sony page. There is the option to zoom, but it resets when you change the page. AFAIC, either of the other two apps work better.

EDIT 2: PuffinTV (I had to sideload this, but it will show up on your leanback launcher!)

PROS

  • Great UI, with lots of preinstalled speeddials!
  • Optimized for websites with videos
  • Launch icon from ATV leanback launcher
  • Back button shows a browse menu, where you can perform various actions like add bookmark, scroll mode, etc.; Long-press back takes you home
  • Sharing pages to Puffin TV from any devices via QR code
  • Google searches via voice input
  • Decent onscreen pointer, with accelerated movement
  • Fast!

CONS

  • No zoom

I think we have a winner! Thanks to /u/kawshik201 who suggested this!

Installing Amazon Video on my Sony Android TV and poor video quality

Hi guys

Did a search of the subreddit but could not find anything that could answer my question.

I've just subscribed to Amazon Prime and installed the apps via the following guide - https://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tv/development/amazon-prime-video-demand-android-tv-t3278778

Problem is, my video are not displaying at 1080p and using the launcher is laggy. Did I do something wrong or is this experience normal?

Thanks!
