4K H.265 videos in Plex play smoothly in direct play on Mi Box...on a Full HD TV

Most of my 4k HEVC H.265 videos play fine in direct play mode in Plex, as long as they are 30 FPS. Some of the 4k videos I have in this format have decryption errors with green tiles and 60 FPS videos transcode.

Most 4k H.265 videos I have don't have problems with decryption and are 30 FPS and they all play very smoothly with no dropped frames BUT I am only running the Mi Box on a 1080p display. That might have something to do with it.

Plex shows direct play is happening and that the resolution is UHD.

Nexus Player x265

I am intrigued with the x265 HEVC codec for re-encoding my personal videos, since i have read it can keep the same quality at a lower size file. I have been messing around with Handbrake on some files, and the output file size is great, however the playback, in kodi, is blocky, especially in fast moving scenes, fire and smoke effects and even scenes with just a solid color background.

I am absolutely open to the idea that i am encoding with bad settings, but i was wondering if it was more likely the codec and the handbraking fault, or is it the Nexus Player's hardware that may be causing the blocking.

If it is in fact the hardware, would it make sense to still begin to re-encode, since future hardware will be albe to handle it, or should i wait until the new hardware is out so i can test settings etc?

Can someone extract the updated Vudu app from their Mi Box?

I grabbed the apk from another post on here previously and it was working perfectly fine on my Nexus Player until Vudu updated the app. Now I'm just getting a screen to update and pulling the apk directly from the play store gets me a screen saying that the version is no longer supported.

Mi Box 4K Dropping Frames

I just picked up a Mi Box and am watching 4k YouTube videos on my TV at 4k 60hrz and see a lot of dropped frames. It appears as lag and is noticeable when watching someone talk and their lips don't match the audio. Anyone else have this issue or thoughts on the problem? I'm thinking I may return it and get the shield or wait for the shield version 2.

Mi Box

I picked up a Mi box on Friday from Walmart. I applied the software update right away. Everything seems pretty solid except for when I was able to set up a Sandisk 32GB flash drive as internal storage but whenever I try to migrate data to the drive the settings app crashes before the data transfer even starts. I was wondering if anyone else was having the same issue.

Anyway to remove the "Mi Box Recommends" on Mi Box Homescreen?

Just set up my Mi Box and am pleased to see it works as expected for most parts. However, compared to the Nexus Player, there is a two-row section of "Mi Box Recommends" on homescreen. Is there any way to remove these two rows of apps?

Also btw, what is the best easy-to-use, clean, bug free sideload launcher you are using?

Time for Launcher UI refresh. (Or at least an update)(with customization)

On my Shield and Nexus I have so many apps installed that it takes forever to scroll to the right and open less used apps. Adding more rows would alleviate this problem.

But it made me think of all the other little nit picks I have with the Leanback Launcher. There's no customization, no way of hiding apps you don't want showing up (but may not want to disable). Most of us hate the OEM custom rows (Shield Hub, Xiaomi Recommends), it would be awesome to disable them and make our own custom rows. How About adding widget, bookmark, and shortcut functionality into the mix.

Android TV is heading in the right direction in terms of market penetration. But now Google needs to respond with more love to the platform. Bringing more features and improvements is a solid way of doing that.

What are your suggestions for improvements to Android TV UI and features?

Moving "Games" row down below "Apps" row

Anyone know if there is a way to do this? I'd like to add a game or two, but not if it's going to push the apps row down off of the screen. I mean I bought this thing for watching TV programs, etc. And think the row of apps should have priority over games.

Chinese channels on Mi Box?

I'm wondering if there are Chinese channels on the Mi Box, say maybe Hong Kong news or Chinese dramas? It's somewhat of a dealbreaker for me whether or not there are Chinese language content on the Mi Box you can buy in the US.

Windows Network Shares

Hi everyone! If you are are having issues accessing network shares on your Android TV device, follow the steps below and it should fix you up.

  1. On the Windows machine where you are sharing from press the Windows Key + R on your keyboard to show the run dialog, then type regedit and click ok. Make sure to click yes if the administrative prompt pops up for you.

  2. Carefully navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters in the left hand pane. Once you click parameters, right click in the right hand pane and choose new -> DWORD (32-bit) Value and name it IRPStackSize.

  3. Double click on IRPStackSize and enter 31 in the dialog that pops up while leaving Hexadecimal selected, then click OK.

  4. Reboot. You don't have to reboot (you can restart the 'Server' and 'Computer Browser' services instead, but it's easier just to reboot usually.)

  5. You should now be able to access your network shares. Enjoy!

To tell a truth...The Mi Box people are getting in the U.S. is already an outdated model in China. Here is the link for their current model.
