Plex on Shield: DCA (DTS) audio not working when direct playing

I feel like I'm very close to being able to play all my videos through the Plex app rather than Kodi. This is the last barrier.

All of my DCA codec (DTS) videos lack audio when forcing direct play on my Shield TV. Setting direct play to auto doesn't work at all, probably since my NAS can't transcode.

Kodi plays the audio fine, but I'd rather use the Plex app.

My settings:

  • Quality: "Original"
  • Direct play: Forced
  • Direct stream: On
  • Passthrough: tried enabled/disabled, both with the same result.

My Shield is connected directly to my TV via HDMI and I'm just using my TV's speakers.

Is there some setting on my end that I could try to fix this? Or could it be my TV that is unable to play back this type of audio?

Hulu black screen

Hey all, I've been having an issue over the past several weeks. I'll be watching hulu and then the screen just goes black. I have to exit or if the show (not the app) and click resume, the it works again. It's random when it happens, but I can't find anything in any. It's an Nvidia Shield and it doesn't happen while watching Netflix or HBONow... Any ideas of what may be the issue?

Interrupted Download.

I recently was downloading two games when my internet went out. Both games are compatible but they do not show up in the play store on the device. When I started the downloaded, it was from my computer and everything was going well.

My internet went out before they were complete. Now, google play store is telling me they are installed and I have no option to download to the device again.

Any help is appreciated.

What killer feature are you hoping to be announced for AndroidTV soon?

With the Google I/O less than 2 weeks away I thought I'd make a post that lists the features that I'd love to see implemented into AndroidTV. Some are more feasible than others but I thought it would be nice to think of the more exciting features Google could announce rather than just a faster chipset.

Off the top of my head I came up with a couple ideas, some would require additional hardware whilst others are purely software:

  • AndroidTV USB tuner - something similar to the USB tuner available for the Xbox One, plugs directly into the back of an existing AndroidTV box and integrates with the live channels app to allow for OTA channels. I know HD Homerun provides a similar solution but I'd prefer a wired solution with no transcoding.

  • Fingerprint sensor for account switching - using a sensor on the remote or the actual box/TV would allow for a multi account Android experience. The fingerprint would work more as an ID rather than a password so that multiple people could use the TV to access their own content without switching in a menu. Fingerprints could also be used to authorize payments on the play store.

  • "OK Google" hotword detection that's always on - would require a USB conferencing microphone (like this) for current boxes as keeping the microphone listening on remotes would likely eat a lot of battery but would allow for the user to use Google voice commands without touching the voice button. May require a low power chip to reduce power consumption and allow for sleeping but could be enabled for most existing devices when awake. Probably would not be enabled by default due to privacy concerns.

  • Adding Google Now cards to the homescreen - would make the AndroidTV more of a hub for information, calendar events could be taken from Google calendar and notes from Keep could be pinned to the homescreen making the homescreen a noticeboard for the days activities. Could sync with a whole family's accounts to keep track important events like football practice or family game night whilst providing cards about local events making AndroidTV a personal news outlet.

  • Now on tap integration - kind of an odd idea but would use the subtitles of a live channel to provide information for google now. Say you were watching the news and heard about a local car crash you could use google now to bring up information about it, the news would be displayed using PIP but you would be able to read the full article.

If you were Google what feature would you announce?

Do I need an android TV box for my Smart TV?

Hi all, my apologies if this is the wrong forum (please move if so), I didn't know where exactly to post this despite much searching.

I have a new Smart TV on the way (Hisense 50M3300 - http://www.richersounds.ie/p-202001-50m3300.aspx). I'm wondering if I need to buy an android box or equivalent in order to watch live sports etc. or will I already have this capability on the TV?

I also know nothing about the various boxes and am at a loss as to what would suit best. I'd like something that can stream in 4K (if even possible). I saw that Fire TV is supposed to be good? Honestly all the different websites are making it difficult to know what's best. I'm sure boards will know the best value boxes also.

If anyone needs any more information, please ask. I would appreciate any help or guidance.

Thanks in advance.

I am in Europe if that makes any difference.

Status of 23.976 on SHIELD Android TV

I am looking for clarification, I have found information that is contradictory.

I know that on launch SHIELD ATV only supported 24.00 FPS, causing pull-down and it's associated issues. It seems that at some point, maybe android M update, that 23.976 was enabled.

Now, when going to refresh rates in settings I can set the refresh. Obviously I don't want 23.976 output fixed, many things such as youtube are 30/60 FPS. Plex does have the option (like many blu-ray players) to set refresh rate to source on playback. All of that appears to work, except when playing 23.976 content I get cadence and picture anomalies. It's almost like its set at 24.00 FPS and having pulldown artifacts and pacing issues.

I can't verify if its 23.976 or 24 on the TV since like most displays it rounds 23.976 to 24p for the info banner.

Is 23.976 working correctly on SHIELD? If it is, is there a known issue with the Plex implementation of refresh rate switching?

I really don't mind the 60FPS playback, it does a fine job. My main issue is my TV (like many) has a separate motion resolution control for 24p content than 60p content. Basically I am able to get a lot more motion resolution without the dreaded SOE (soap opera effect) when using my TV's dedicated 24p judder reduction. Using the 60FPS motion setting gets the SOE in a hurry.

Thinking of buying a new TV

Hi! I'm looking to buy a new Philips TV. I've grown very attached to ambilight and can't watch TV without it. Looking for a 4k, 3 side ambilight but I want to ask if anyone knows about input lag? I've read about horrible 60 - 70 ms response and that's not acceptable. Are there any good websites to check for Philips TV input lag?

Thanks

Should I get a Nvidia Shield TV?

I was researching various streaming devices and came across the Nvidia Shield TV. I was wondering if it would fit my needs or whether cheaper alternatives would be better? I would primarily use a device like this for streaming movies/tv shows on kodi or netflix but I am a casual gamer so Nvidia's streaming service also appeals to me. I also like the Google cast feature of android tv boxes too. The Nvidia Shield Tv does seem perfect for me but costs €100 more than the next streaming device I looked at, the google nexus player. So I'm asking would it be worth it for me to spend that much money on the Nvidia Shield tv or would you recommend a cheaper alternative like a nexus player or kodi box for my needs? Thank you

Quality of Google Chromecast vs. Nvidis Shield.

Bought an Nvidia Shield the other day thinking I would utilize it's gaming capabilities. Turns out, I only end up watching purchased movies from Google Play and YouTube. Figured I would downgrade to a Google Chromecast.

My question is, will the quality of my purchased movies from Google be the same? Only reason I ask is because when I cast from my phone to the Shield, my HD purchased movies are noticeably worse. I'm assuming this is because it's my phone playing the content, not the Shield doing the heavy lifting. Does Google Chromecast use the same method?

Kodi stops video once my shield TV goes into daydream, can you disable that?

Hey,

like my title mentions, once the Shield goes into daydream the video you were watching gets closed automatically just like when you switch to the "desktop" of the google Launcher.

Is this an Android thing or is there a setting in Kodi which can disable this so that once you return the video is still on and you are not in the menu? This wouldn't be such a big deal with resume points or if daydream could be set for 3h instead the maximum of 1 but I never got resume points working so I always have to fast forward to the previous point where I stopped watching and that is annoying.

I also know that I can disable sleep all together via the dev menu but I'd like to avoid that.

Thanks!

Edit: Found out that the SPMC Kodi Fork actually doesn't do that, I dislike having no Xperience1080 menu though. So it's definitely possible, maybe it's just a Kodi setting. Hope you guys can help me here.
