Which performs well, faster, reliable and well supported, Android TV Televisions or Android TV Set Top Boxes?

Trying to upgrade my experience with the Chromecast to an Android TV experience and was wondering the best option.

I'm currently caught between a TCL 4K Android TV and Xiaomi Mi box S 4K. I've never had experience with any and thought you guys with your experiences could help me in this case.

Disadvantages and Advantages to any of them? 4K streaming issues and workarounds (Heard the Xiaomi doesn't do 4K wirelessly, will need an Ethernet to USB cable), How true is this.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Help with Options for a Media Player

Looking for some recommendation here - I'm struggling to find something that will work for this scenario:

I built a teardrop trailer and have the portable battery powered Viewsonic M1 Projector - I bought it because of it's short throw, and long battery life. Unfortunately it doesn't play 90% of the media I try to play on it via USB. So I am looking for an external solution to connect to the projector, either through HDMI / USB.

Streaming Sticks (Roku, Firestick, Chromecast) - Was hoping I could send local content from my phone to the stick unfortunately I won't have a WiFi network for the device to connect to.

Android Media Players / PC Sticks - These are powered by DC as far as I could find, and I only have USB power in the trailer.

Basically looking for anything that can robustly play media content, that does not rely on a WiFi connection between devices, and can be powered by USB. Suggestions?

Sony Bravia Android TV - USB Microphone issues

HDR content from Netflix and Amazon Prime Video will not play when I have a USB mic. connected. Video loads to 24% on Netflix, then hangs there indefinitely. Prime video just won't play. Non-hdr streams play fine.

I've tried different USB mics, same issue. Problem immediately goes away when mic is disconnected.

Strange problem that took awhile to realize a mic being connected is the cause. I have no idea how to fix this. Any help is appreciated.

The NVIDIA SHIELD Is Still The Best Android TV Device & That's A Disgrace

"The fact the 2017 NVIDIA SHIELD is still the best Android TV device is a disgrace.

Not because it is not deserving of the title, but simply because it has the title by default due to the sheer lack of competition within the Android TV set-top box space.

This is a platform designed for TV, and one that can actually be accessed directly through TVs that have adopted Android TV as the default operating system.

Arguably, some might say if I have it on my TV, then I don’t need a separate box, and while there's some merit to that argument, the versions of Android TV available through a TV and a separate device are hardly comparable. Again, you only have to look as far as the SHIELD to see how that’s the case.

The NVIDIA SHIELD is a device that’s spoken extremely highly about within the Android TV community. Yes, it has its issues and can be quite buggy at times, but it is still considered to be a great Android TV product.

This is not simply due to NVIDIA's version of Android TV, as the version does not particularly differ from other Android TV devices at its core. All consumer Android TV devices run the same version of Android TV, although they might run different Android TV releases depending on when the device was announced and how supported the device is in terms of updates - a conversation for another day.

The reason the SHIELD is so loved is the added touches made possible because of the hardware. Gaming is a big one with the SHIELD due to the device being more than capable of holding its own as a decent, not console but decent, gaming device.

Yes, the software plays a big role here, but not as big of a role as the hardware. It is not the "NVIDIA Games" app that makes the SHIELD what it is, it’s the hardware that makes the NVIDIA Games app a possibility in the first place. Something you are unlikely to get with a TV that happens to run on Android TV due to the lack of comparable processing power.

Granted, not everyone is interested in gaming but that’s not the point. Here, gaming is simple an example of one way Android TV can be made better through the use of more powerful hardware. The type of hardware that is usually best served through the addition of a separate device.

Remember the Razer Forge TV?

Of course, the natural assumption is to now blame device makers considering it is them, or the absence of them, who makes devices and evidently no one is looking to release a decent Android TV device. But that would be too simple as this all comes back to Google.

Right now, there’s no shortage of TV makers and cable/satellite companies signing up to use Android TV. That’s not a coincidence but the result of a concerted effort by Google to court these companies and brands. Google has worked hard over the last couple of years to make it clear to companies why they should be using the Android TV platform. Google has worked hard to make it as easy as possible for those companies to utilize Android TV.

The problem here is this is not the Android TV most consumers will be used to. One of the “selling points” Google often uses to get those businesses on side is the fact that they can use the Android TV platform as the basis of their produce experience. They can then build on that and tailor the overall feel, and even the look to be more in line with what they want.

AT&T and its new DIRECTV box is a prime example of this and the reality of this while-label-like approach is that the company/business controls the user experience. The experience becomes only as good, and as limiting, as the company wants it to be, and the whole package is then hidden beneath the company's own branding - a far cry from the Android TV consumers have gotten to know, like, and want more of.

Google has completely disregarded the consumer market in this respect with its actions clearly indicated its focus lies in selling to companies instead. To be clear, there was the influx of audio devices equipped with Android TV, such as the JBL Link Bar, but there’s two problems with this segment of the market.

Firstly, Google is not selling Android TV to the consumer through these devices. In this sense, Google is again aggressively convincing everyone other than who it should be convincing to adopt Android TV: consumer-end set-top box makers. In principle, these audio-based devices are no different to the TVs that utilize the platform, and therefore will most likely be limited in the same respects. Arguably, more limiting.

Secondly, the influx of new form factors for Android TV hasn't actually materialized.

The consumer market was promised the first of these devices back at Google I/O. That’s the 2018 Google I/O. However, that one device. the JBL Link Bar has been delayed and delayed and delayed. Not only has that one device not arrived to market yet, but all the devices that were expected to follow in its footsteps also haven’t been announced, let alone hit the market. All we have had is the odd projector powered by Android TV which in reality are almost purpose-designed for anywhere other than the home and certainly not what someone should consider to be a powerful Android TV device in the same way a set-top box can be.

The only home-based box devices the consumer market has received was the newer Xiaomi Mi Box. Although that was hardly an improvement on the previous model which in itself was hardly anything to write home about to begin with.

If anything, the Android TV set-top box market has just continued to shrink since the arrival of the SHIELD with the likes of the Razer Forge TV, the OUYA, and the Nexus Player all having been retired without a refresh or replacement.

So yes, the NVIDIA SHIELD is the best Android TV device you can buy although objectively there are so few options available, calling it “the best” feels like a stretch.

What's more, the SHIELD will continue to be the best Android TV device until the next SHIELD Android TV device is released, and then that will become the best until NVIDIA decides to release another model.

All of this will happen by default due to the lack of competition, and that’s a disgrace."

My MIBOX3 is now automatically upgrading and Netflix does not work anymore.

Spent at least 5 hours tonight and wanted to share with you my experience. So, first thing, my MIBOX3 upgraded itself (?) few days ago to version OPR6.170623.013.2573 - this was quite strange, since there was no option either to install or not.OK, so - everything seemed to work until I tried to play Netflix and the error tvq-pm-100 appears.

So, I went to downgrade the box - (was not easy o red all the stuff and install it), by applying the 2167 version and different versions after that - BUT always once I have set up the WiFi connection the automatic update (to 2573) takes place???

It seems impossible to avoid the automatic update, at least with WiFi enabled.

This has got me crazy. I do not know what to do, unless to wait for a system wide upgrade from Xiaomi which could restore Netflix usage.

BTW I have another MIBOX3 which is working with Netflix - Hope I'm not alone - this could be very strange if it's my individual problem.

Mibox 3 - audio sync problems only with Prime Video.

Is anyone else experiencing this? When the app is first launched (after a reboot) the audio is fine, but as soon as you rewind or fast forward the audio becomes horribly unsynced. The only solution is to reboot the device, but then you can't rewind or fast forward at all.

This only happens with Prime Video, and only started happening like a month ago. I've had the Mibox for almost a year with no issues. I also have a Shield, which is where I get the most up-to-date Prime Video apks and sideload them into the Mibox.

Why are there so few official Android TV boxes?

I've heard of Android TV but never bothered with it because I didn't see them readily available in store like Chromecast, Roku's, and Fire products. I plan on getting a Shield TV soon but wanted to wait to see if there would be a good sale during Prime Day first. Myself personally I've never used ATV and have mainly used Fire TV/Stick products(which I know is based on ATV).

But with all that said. Why is it that there are so few Android TV products readily available, at least in the US. There are a total of 3 products, but only 2 can be found in store. One is very expensive and the other can only be found at Walmart and I've read that it doesn't have enough power to run ATV efficiently. Why hasn't Google released a $100 ATV Chromecast or anyone else jump on board to make an official box?

I know TV's have been coming out in recent years with it pre installed but I'm not going to purchase my TV based on the OS. At the same time though it's hard to add ATV to my TV in the 1st place. I'm on a budget like most people and didn't want to spend $180+ on a Shield TV just to get access to a good ATV box. I'm hardly going to use it for gaming, I just want a fast machine that won't be plagued by slowdown in the coming years. It sucks not having a $80-100 option just to make it sting less.

And yes I have googled "why are there so few ATV boxes" and I've found very few answers. This seemed like a good place to get some insight on why this is the case.

Also I tried the same videos with the TV's own player and no such problem there.

SMB Share Issues

This question could be posted to a handful of different places but I thought I would start here.

I have a ShieldTV and connect to 4 shared drives located in a Windows 10 box. 3 of my drives connect and mount no problem. The last drive however only ever shows me the System Volume Information folder on the drive. If I connect to the share through Kodi I am able to see all of the directories. If I connect from another linux machine and browse the share using smbclient I am also able to see all of the directories. ES File Explorer is also only able to see the System Volume Information folder

I have tried removing the share from the drive in question and re-sharing it to no avail. I have also tried changing the drive letter and sharing it and gotten nowhere. Can someone point me in the right direction to get this fixed?

Sometimes my Netflix doesn't play Dolby Vision

This is happening every alternate time or so and eventually I have to restart the tv to return Netflix back to normal state where it shows DV and 5.1 logos on the supported titles like Our Planet, Stranger Things. Otherwise it shows only HD on literally all titles and plays in shit quality too. I haven't messed with any settings but just you should know I have VU Premium Android (55-OA) which is not optimized for Netflix as it comes with an error code (-14) (but fyi this TV supports Netflix, if not natively, to the fullest as the R&D guys tweaked some shit and got it working and I haven't experienced any problems other than the one I have made this post about) on every app start.
