Mi Box International (mdz-16-ab) Oreo Update details and Bug tracker (clean version)

I’m a mi box user in US and have a direct communication channel to Xiaomi Mi Box’s engineers. I will do my best to bridge the users here who have troubles with Oreo firmware with the dev team. Please let this thread be drama free.

Whenever I have new conversations with the devs, I will update here. They include but are not limited to what the devs are working on, which bugs were fixed and which bugs were discovered (by users in the comments). Keep in mind it is very hard to fix a bug if the dev can't reproduce it, so if you are providing new bugs, please be as detailed as possible. I have helped them fixed several bugs so far, I think the key is very detailed reproducing steps.

Update 11/06:

  1. The auto frame rate switching is top priority now. They already noticed wrxtasy’s hint, but fix is not trivial. Kernel fix is easy but a lot of modules in Android framework and Android hardware layers need to be changed. They also need to work with Amlogic on this so a lot of things are not in their control. This fix will not be included in the current OTA4 update, but likely in next OTA5
  2. Android P is planned with google! Development scheduled to start end of this year (likely). I think they are a bit short of hands since they also have Mi Box S to work with, but they did not give up this box.
  3. Please join https://www.facebook.com/groups/mibox/ the devs are there. It already has 7k users. I also introduced this place to the devs, hopefully in the future, the problem posted here is likely getting through.

Update 11/07: OTA4 RC2 is out for beta testers

Update 11/08: It looks like the OTA is approved by google and now everyone has received it.

Oreo OTA4 (2396) Fixed the following issues:

  1. when mi box wakes up from sleep, the user specified resolution such as 4k@60 might change to 480p or other low resolution.
  2. When user changes refresh rate in settings, it only changes display refresh rate, but system still think it is under the original refresh rate, resulting multiple apps misbehave, including Kodi. Kodi won’t play 1080p@24 video smoothly if user switches to 24fps in settings, unless reboot.
  3. WiFi stability.
  4. Google assistant recognition quality

The devs are testing the DD+ dropout issue but they can't reproduce it. I reproduced it on my soundbar, I may spend sometime to help this weekend.

If anyone still have the mibox won't wake up issue in the latest build 2396 after reset, please leave comments. I don't think this issue has been passed on yet, and it is really hard to reproduce. I had it a few times on 2303 and 2179, but none in recent month. Then again I'm using an IR remote to wake the box up.

Update 11/10

People who has won’t wake up after sleep issue, please do me a favor:

  1. Install “Mi Remote” app and connect with the box. Next time when you are having wake up issue, try if the app can wake the box up.
  2. Tell me your network environment. Such as WiFi 2.4G/5G and channel number, having Bluetooth speaker/headphone connected or not.

Update 11/12

A test build to fix the wake up issue is prepared by the devs. Will collect a few serial numbers from the comments to do the targeted test.

Update 11/16

test build sent to a few testers who has the issue and passed SN to me. Let's wait and see their feedback.

Update 11/18

According to the feedback of testers, build 2405 does fix the wake up issue, will inform the dev to push the build to beta test and then public.

Devs also fixed some DD+ issues, but the dropout issue on Netflix and amazon is not fixed. They still cannot reproduce the issue. They are using Yamaha AVR as a test device.

Devs have addressed a issue from user regarding no 4K playback on Netflix. Netflix has provided the following information to the users: When the device resolution is equal or below 4K@30hz, Netflix will not supply 4K video. It is only supplied above 4k@50hz

Update 11/28

I have been busy and can only check my Mi Box once in a few days. A few bugs got delayed in report, so please use the FB group, and if you are a beta tester, use:

I noticed if the box has been off a few days, it won't wake up (2415 build), reported to the devs :(

Might get rid of MI Box and go Google Cast device only?

Casting on the original MI Box seems pretty crappy. Works sometimes others not.

Thinking abt getting the Google Cast device and going with that but want to know if it is bullet proof?

Can you advise?

Jetstream remote options?

Just got the JetStream to replace my Fire Stick 2nd Gen, and has been very impressed so far. I am trying to girlfriend-proof this; previously I used Sideclick to combine a TV remote with Fire Stick remote. What are my options for JetStream? I am just looking for rudimentary TV support (on/off/volume), it's an older TV without CEC.

Anyone want to buy a ChannelMaster Stream+ ?

Hey folks.
Mods: Sorry if this is not OK.. I did not see it in the rules.
I'm getting rid of my ChannelMaster Stream+.
It's not my thing, and neither Google nor ChannelMaster seem very invested in finishing what they started with Live Channels.
$85, includes all the usual, including their lame remote.
Free shipping in US.

Thanks.

Not so noob but need help

Hey all !

First of all, sorry if my english is not as correct as it should be, this is not my mother tongue.

Next, i am not so noob but I still need help.

I have a Synology with DS Video set.

I have a MiBox (i guess it is a MiBox 3 but not 100% sur, will check once at home).

I have movies and shows wich have "DTS" for audio format. DS Video player is not able to play it. Ok i get it, DS Video player does not have codec audio for DTS. Well, let's find another media player that can read all this --> MX Player. Perfect, it read everything and that is all I need.

But, because there is always a thing, MX Player is bugging everytime i put movie or show on paused. It is bothering so much... Everytime MX Player is buggy as F, i have to force stop application to be able to read my content...

I am looking for help and if you time to give, I will be honored to take your wisdom.

Thank you all.

Edit : 100% sure that my MiBox is a MiBox 3.

Mibox hanging on boot

A week or so ago, my mibox froze. I reset it and it just hung on the boot screen. I followed this post and got it working again. Well today, it did the same thing. I think it might be messing up auto updates or something. Is there any way to fix this?

Jetstream Plex Ethernet Issues

I'm pretty happy with this little box thus far except for the fact that Plex transcodes the crap out of most of my library over the built in Ethernet port regardless of quality settings. If I disconnect Ethernet and use WiFi and everything works as it should. Would like to think this is simply a Plex issue that will be resolved in a future update since no other apps appear to have issues using the Ethernet connection.

Has anyone else seen this issue or have a workaround? I'm considering trying one of the gigabit Ethernet adapters that work on the mibox but that's certainly not ideal.

I've also been unsuccessful at manually assigning a static IP and Cloudfare's DNS to this box for some reason.

[Update: It's back, and at more retailers] NVIDIA Shield Android TV (2017) on sale for $140 ($39 off) at Amazon

Be nice to the noobs (Discord server link)

Hello everyone. I just got my shield today and while I haven't finished setting it up completely yet (what's better plex or kodi?), I suspect we're going to get an influx of new users due to the shield price drop. Anyway, I noticed someone made a discord server for Android TV last year but there's not many folks on it yet, so I figured I'd drop the link here in case anyone wants to chat.

Streaming Only - Nvidia Shield vs Firestick 4k ?

So I'm in the market for an updated streamer, but I already have a gaming PC (i7 7700k, GTX 1080ti), so no streaming games needed for me. Sorry if this post comes off a bit blunt, but it's irritating there aren't any good reviews or comments that compare the streaming capabilities of the shield other than "best 4k streamer" (like wtf does that mean?)

I currently use a Gen2 FireTV (non-stick, old school box-top), and it works pretty well and have been extremely happy with it. I am hugely invested and satisfied with the Amazon ecosystem. However, with it being a nearly 4 year old device, it's starting to show it's age (snappiness affected, can only play 4K at 30 fps). I use my FireTV for streaming (Playstation Vue, Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO, Hulu, etc...).

So why should I buy a Shield at $140 and not just upgrade to the new Amazon FireStick 4k for $50 ? Everything I've researched has concluded the Firestick 4k is the better buy for me; am I wrong ?

I don't use/have a media server (no Kodi/Plex needed), I prefer to stream as it's vastly more convenient (even if I wanted to Plex etc... I'd just use my PC as the server). Nvidia homerism won't work for me, I don't care it's a nvidia device. Gimme actual reasons why it's superior and it's $90 price increase over Firestick 4k is justified as a strict streaming device.

  • - Both do can 4k and h256 at 60 fps
  • - Both have updated streaming apps? I have the impression FireTV apps may be updated more regularly?
  • - If I bought the Firestick 4K I'd also buy the ethernet adapter (I agree the lack of the ethernet port as a primary feature is stupid). So they'll both be wired devices
  • - Shield is more brand agnostic with Android, so I'd get access to YouTube TV. But then again, I'd continue to use PlayStation Vue anyways. SO that does not benefit me.

Thanks for your input and I hope this post (and participating replies) prove useful for others also interested in the nvidia shield

Finally Happened To Me: One Of Our MiBox 3's Is Bricked

Well, it finally happened to me. Reading there was a new update available I re-enabled Google Play Services. Did an update check. Nothing. Went to turn it off, later, light went off but display stayed lit. Unplugged, counted to twenty, plugged back in. Now all it does is what you see below. It's almost a relief. Now I can toss the verkakte thing and replace it with something that's not electronic garbage.

Good Job, Xiaomi!
