Chromecast Ultra vs Sony XE9 TV's built-in Chromecast

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but i'l give it a shot:

I just purchased a new Sony Android TV (KD-55XE9005) which I see have Chromecast "built in" by default. I already have a Chromecast Ultra device from before, and I guess what i'm curious about is which one is "better" in terms of picture quality, performance etc.

Mi Box digital audio SPDIF

Looks like a recent patch broke digital audio through SPDIF cable. It used to work a couple months ago. Well it never worked with Plex but it worked with VLC. AAC and AC3 both worked in VLC but DTS has always been broken.

Now AAC doesn't work in VLC. AC3 still works fine. DTS still doesn't work. Hopefully nougat update will fix all of this including Plex.

Just to clarify, I still hear audio using VLC and playing AAC or DTS but it's not digital audio. It's converting to analog. I know this because my receiver does a loud clicking sound when it switches from digital to analog or vice versa. It doesn't click when playing AAC and DTS but I still hear audio so it's converting to analog somehow inside VLC.

Media player with subtitles scrapping / automatic download / please don't suggest Kodi

I am looking for something to replace Kodi. Kodi is way too much for what I need but I really appreciate the subtitle scrapping feature it had (Kodi match the file name and length on subscene and download the subtitle for me) and it's network playing feature.

I am also looking on versatility for file format.

I tried plex, but the subtile download services are crappy (plug-in without too much option most of the time it doesn't give me captions).

TNT and TBS were out before but did not have proper launcher banners for Android TV. They do now.

YouTube Kids is as you expect. Looks nice but may be a web app like YouTube.

Problems with USB drive - MiBox

Hi guys,

I have a MiBox and I have a Samsung USB drive connected to it. I formatted it as Android Internal Storage. The launcher was unresponsive so I had to unplug the MiBox. Unfortunately it seems this messed up with the USB drive since it shows a message saying "USB Drive was safely disconnected" when I connect it.

I removed the USB drive and took a look at it in my Windows computer and it looks fine. I could see the Android files on it.

However, how can I fix this on my MiBox? I really didn't want to factory reset it.

Any ideas?

Questions for a new buyer

I don't know much about these boxes other than there seem to be a lot of them. I want an android box to:

  • watch netflix -watch movies off a USB drive -stream live nba games

do most android boxes do those things? During my research, it seems you can get netflix and live sports pretty easy but im not getting a lot of answers regarding watching movies on USB drives

Finally, do you have any suggestions for a good box? I live in Canada if that means anything, I can settle for not having live sports but I would really like the netfix and USB drives to be a feature

Best insight on Netflix/Xiaomi DRM issue

You may have missed it as it was buried inside a recent thread. comment by /u/crackheadbimbo offers a very plausible explanation why MiBox fails to pass Netflix streams when other devices are unaffected.

"Don't that tell you something about how netflix disses Mi like a red-headed stepchild. All these other boxes have a good rep. Netflix forces the lowly Mi to prove its DRM credentials every time. If you have a no-name POS TV, it will fail the Netflix check every time. Don't doubt for one second Netflix knows exactly who they talking to. You should be ragging on Netflix. Mi is doing the best it can. That's the real deal in re that DRM stuff. It is an end-to end security protocol."

Sony X930E Not Recognizing USB Drive

Hey everyone,

All right, so I'm having a small problem that I can't seem to figure out:

Whenever I connect my Verbatim 8GB USB drive into the TV, it just doesn't seem to be able to recognize it. With that being said, whenever I go to the settings and click on "Storage & reset", it says "Verbatim USB drive is safely ejected". So, it seems to at least detect it momentarily before immediately ejecting it and not allowing it to be read or accessed on the TV by any means. No apps seem to be able to read it at all, not even Kodi can recognize it.

At first I thought it might be a formatting issue, and figured maybe the TV can't read NTFS (that's what my drive was formatted to initially), so I formatted it to FAT32, but still no luck.

Any clue what the heck is going on?

Minor updates:

  • I tried using my Verbatim flash drive on all the USB inputs with the same results.

  • I plugged in a wired mouse that worked just fine.

Major updates:

  • I plugged in a 128 MB (yup, from school days) Kingston USB I had lying around and it seems to work just fine. I can access it from the "Storage & reset menu", as well as other apps.
I can't figure out what the heck is going on, because my Verbatim USB works just fine on everything else, including other TVs.

  • From looking around online, it looks to be an Android TV issue, and it seems to be happening to a lot of Shield users.

Any way to stream device audio to an Android phone?

I'd like to be able to stream the sound from my MiBox to my phone so I can listen with my headphones wirelessly. I have this set up on my PC with SoundWire, but was wondering if anyone has a method for doing something similar on Android TV.

I haven't had any luck, but I thought I'd give it a shot here. Thanks!
