Currently have a PleX server on a laptop and the media stored on an external HD. Any tips for migrating the data to an Nvidia Shield TV and setting this up right on a whole new network?

I'm moving and trying to do this whole thing right, starting fresh. I could use a bit of help migrating the library/server to a new machine. I want to make sure I store everything properly and don't run into storage issues on the Shield. I also want to make sure the ports are all forwarded properly for the best performance outside of my network since I share my server with a few people.

I'm not sure if it changes how I should configure everything, but I will be using the Shield TV to primarily run the usual video streaming apps in addition to setting it up with Kodi. Kodi can be a bit outside of my technical scope but I can configure Exodus and will likely just be using that ..but suggestions are welcome on how to optimize this setup.

Here's my current gear:

  • Seagate 4TB External HD with my current PleX library stored on it.
  • Shitty HP laptop I am retiring.
  • Gigbit hardwired Fios over a Quantum G1100 Modem/Router.
  • Brand new Nvidia Shield TV

Thanks!

FYI: Logitech Harmony Hub now has "MENU" command for SHIELD TV

Had a very positive service response from Logitech Harmony team regarding adding this command to Harmony Remote. It is not that widely used today (as it is obsolete by Android TV design guidance), but there are still many legacy apps that utilize it.

You may need to remove your SHIELD TV & related activities and add them back again to make it work.

How much do we still have to wait for the Mi Box upgrade to 7.0?

Google needs to trademark "Android TV" better. To help differentiate between Android TV proper and a TV box that runs Android

Just a thought. Who agrees? Cheap TV boxes that are a different OS are giving "Android TV" a bad image.

MIbox and apps not showing up

If I slideload or install apps from aptoide those apps don't show on the home screen I have to go to settings apps to launch them.

Am I missing something or is this limited by the OS

Made the mistake of buying an "Android TV Box" from Amazon a year ago and the OS is shit now. Should I go with a Mi Box or is Shield really worth the price?

Thanks everyone for you input. I ended up pulling the trigger for the following reasons:

Ongoing support. This was the biggest reason for me, considering the fact that this Chinese box is falling apart and I can't install DirectTV Now and it runs pretty much every app like dookie. I read some threads about the Mi Box being awesome and I read a bunch about the device not getting updates for months and breaking. I know these are on a case-by-case basis, but I'd rather have a higher rated, more stable device.

Device Specs. 4k is cool and I probably won't use that or gaming that often, but the ability to handle GB speeds, better USB ports, and overall beefier specs. I know the Mi could likely handle Kodi/DirectTV Now and whatever else I throw at in well enough, but if i'm using a hardwired box for my whole central entertainment system, might as well make it powerful.

Amazon is awesome and accepted my year old $60 box as a return. I also recently got a similar $35 for my parents but I'm returning that too. I signed up for DirectTVNow (was planning on it) and they give you a free firestick, so I'm giving that to my mom instead of the new Chinese box ...essentially I am getting $95 back (inb4 /r/frugal says it's not free money, you already spent it) it doesn't seem so crazy to pull the trigger on the Shield for another $85.

Hopefully this Shield jawn owns up to the hype. Thanks boys.

Shield TV is $20 off for Prime day

Not the best deal, but if you've on the fence this might be the deal you've been waiting for. I think it's only for the 16gb model.

Gamestream multiplayer?

How do you guys get the multiplayer working on your gamestream? For now it seems REALLY limited: as in, only the native games work properly. The games I add manually work for 1 player just fine, but don't work at all with multiple controllers.

I also tried using two Nivida controllers with mixed in 360/One controllers and it never seemed to work (wired or not). Is this normal? Is support just not there for this yet?

Xiaomi Mi TV Box - Color Bug

Hey.
I have purchased the international version of the Mi TV Box and turns out there's a major issue with my device.
Overall it's smooth and definitely a high quality product, but for some reason I get a very weird color issue every few minutes.
The colors just gets very weird, here's a picture I took;

The picture goes to normal after a couple of minutes.

Is this a known, fixable bug? What can I try here?
Should I just return it?

Thanks.

Plex for Kodi addon on Mi Box + 4K Content

Does anyone on here use Plex for Kodi (official addon) and watch x264/x265 4k files? The reason I ask is because no matter what 4k content I try to watch i get very stuttery playback, it only happens on 4k files. Its definitely not buffering or struggling with Internet capacity and I've tried various settings inside Kodi but it doesn't seem to fix it.

Just wondering if I'm alone or this is a common problem. I'm on the Android 7.0 BETA for the Mi Box.

mibox + retroarch 1.6.0 setup?

anyone have this working? I for the life of me cant get any of my joysticks to work for games:

  1. default mibox remote
  • doesnt move anything on the menu
  1. AndroidTV app via my android phone
  • I can move the menu and select items (this is my most successful device)
  1. wireless xbox 360 controller via usb adapter
  • connects but d pad does not work

  • only the analog left moves the menu but very erratically, seems to jump 4-5 menu items each tap of any direction

  • I can get to input mapping via 2) above but as soon as i connect the xbox 360 wireless controller i cant control anything with 2) anymore

  1. generic logitech pc joystick
  • buttons don't do anything

Anyone have success with any other devices? Or maybe I need to downgrade to another retroarch?

I wanted some clarification on the Mi Box bundle deal from walmart. It talks about some $50 Sling TV Credit but want to know if the credit is a direct credit ? Here are some questions...

  1. Is the code for sling tv emailed by Walmart after purchase ?

  2. The $50 code, will it work even on subscribing to International TV on Sling ?

  3. Is there a minimum time I need to subscribe if I have to use that code ? if yes then does it stack with the sling tv device offer of free roku express ?
