Which to buy? Shield TV 16gb 2017 or 16gb 2015 model?

Should I get the 2015 model or the new 2017 model?

A big draw for me is having the headphone jack in the remote control, and the option of an SD card.. but I dont know am I mad to consider a 2 year old device for these features alone... I know I can purchase the old remote separately but I want to keep cost as low as possible.

I can pick up the 2015 model (with no remote) for approx €25 less than the new 2017 model.

Any advice appreciated, Thanks

Anyone currently using DirecTV Now on Android TV?

If so, are you currently using the FireTV or Android version?

Have you updated the software to the latest version?

At this time, new installs do not work, due to force close (Android version), location issues (even with location enabled), or complete Error 40s (just an issue with the app).

If you are running it without issue, please share details for us fellow users.

Canadian looking for a streaming box

Hi all, I need help deciding on a streaming box. All I use is Kodi, Netflix is a bonus. I'm thinking between the new Shield or the Mi box. Issue is, Mi box isnt available in Canada so I'd have to jump some hoops to get. The Shield seems great but cost seems a little high for what I need it for. I do want a really good Android tv experience as well, which I know the Shield has, not sure about Mi Box. Is it worth jumping hoops for the Mi and save some money or fork over the cash for a Shield? Thanks in advance.

PSA: Shield TV Remote might work with MiBox

Today I tested using the Shield TV Remote (Gen2) with MiBox. Here is what I found:

  1. Pairing is smooth.

  2. Volume control works fine. It behaves similar to the volume buttons on Mi Remote.

  3. Voice input is a bit interesting. My MiBox was paired with 1x stock Mi remote, 1x Nexus Player remote and 1x shield remote (gen2) during the test. Whichever voice input button of the three I press, it only takes the mic on Mi remote for voice input and recognition.

With all these information, I think the Shield TV remote gen 1 is actually pretty good for MiBox, considering the useless IR blaster for MiBox and the benefit of the headphone jack.

But even after the discount, a gen 1 remote is more than half of a mibox itself:) so might not be super useful information.

Transfer files from phone to Shield TV via Wifi?

I was wondering what the best way/app is to transfer files (movies mostly) from my Android phone (LG G5) to the Shield TV over wifi?

I like to keep movies on my phone and watch them on lunch at work as well as cast them to the Shield TV. However, my lady sometimes wants to watch movies I've downloaded and if I'm not home with my phone, she is SOL.

I know there are many and better ways to skin a cat, but does anyone know the best way over wifi? Thanks.

Xiaomi Mi Box Questions

Hey all,

So I am leaning toward getting the Mi Box as a budget device, however I had a few questions first.

Does it support surround sound through Kodi? A few posts seem to be mixed here. I plan on eventually hooking it up to a Denon AVR-S720W 7.2 Channel Full 4K Ultra HD AV Receiver. Is the shield really that much better? I would just be using this to watch movies/shows.

ShieldTV 2017 Plex linking issues

Today I received my new ShieldTV 2017 model. But the linking of my PLEX account always fails.

I go to plex.tv/link

enter the code from the ShieldTV and the browser says everything ok, go back to your app.

But on the ShieldTV nothing happens. It stays on the PLEX page that shows the code.

On my ShieldTV 2015 PLEX works fine.

Is anybody else having this issue?

Shield TV Remote Issues

I know this has been talked about often however what I have read does not pertain to my scenario. I just bought a new Shield TV over the weekend and absolutly love it. However one minor issue is the left button on my remote only works 80% of the time. I dont think it is laggy or has 2.4GHz interference since the other buttons work just fine. However is this something that is normal or is there any way to reset this without contacting Nvidia or returning it?

Android TV browser

I installed Chrome on my Shield. Just wondering how do you control it? Do you need an external mouse and keyboard? I can't click/select anything using the remote since there's no cursor.

Also are there any apps that you can use on your phone to simulate a mouse/keyboard?

Android TV 6.0 update is terrible

Hey guys, just wanted to post this to see if you guys were seeing the same results.

My tv (Sony) just pushed the android tv 6.0 update and it is so buggy and slow. I often have to restart the TV just to get rid of the command lag and watching Netflix is incredibly skippy.

Others seeing this too?

Edit: model number: Sony 49X830C

PSA SHIELD TV 2015 Owners - The Shield Hub Isn't Going Away For Us with the 5.0 Update

EDIT: IT APPEARS NVIDIA HAS DOUBLED BACK ON THIS. THE OEM ROW WILL BE GONE FOR ALL! CHEERS!

I have seen some conflicting information/conclusions tossed around. The new 2017 SHIELD does not have a SHIELD Hub (so Netflix and Amazon both appear with all of your other apps). However, this will not be the case for 2015 owners. We will still have the SHIELD Hub featured prominently at the top. Geforce Now and Gamestream will eventually be bundled into the new NVIDIA Games app as the app rolls out. The SHIELD Hub will thus have 3 items - Netflix, Amazon, and NVIDIA Games. I was told that this is a result of pre-existing contracts (i.e. Netflix) and I am willing to bet Amazon being featured alongside Netflix on the 2015 model was a compromise that was made to get them on board finally.

This information comes from Chris Daniels (SHIELD product manager) during a meeting with a handful of users/enthusiasts/bloggers.

Furthermore, it wasn't quite clear if the "apps" row would be moved above the "games" row, like on the 2017 model. He did indicate that gamestream games will appear in the "games" row.

Upgrading to Android TV

I have a Philips PUS8809 Tv which was shipped with Google Tv.

After using it for a year or so I realized that there's a newer OS (Android Tv) with a better UI, I don't think Philips is going to ever release an update, so I was wondering if it was possible to update the Tv to that OS somehow by myself?

Thanks! :)

Love my 2nd gen Chromecast, should I get a mibox?

I have a 1st gen WeTek Play box for about 1.5 years, running LibreELEC/Kodi (Android experience is just terrible with that box). also got an AVR and a 5.1 setup.

and 1 2nd gen Chromecast for about a year, which I absolutely love, I find myself watching everything with it (using Videostream) and only turning on the Kodi box for DTS passthrough (now I understand that I can set Videostream's audio profile to PCM and have software decoding of DTS, AVR gets multi channel PCM).

I thought of getting rid of the WeTek box and replacing it with the mibox (DTS and hd audio passthrough - my AVR supports it). I posted it on ebay and now that there are actual bids on it I'm re-thinking if I should get the mibox at all or just stay with the Chromecast..)

again, the main use is Kodi for DTS/HD-audio passthrough. I'm not a "heavy" Kodi user and don't really keep a large media library. Videostream's concept is good enough (watch something, then delete it). I have a Netflix subscription but there's not much added value over a Chromecast there..

I'm interested to get some advise... thanks!

Fire TV APK's to sideload to Android TV?

Does anyone know a good place to find specifically Fire TV APK's of apps that aren't available on Android TV which is sadly pretty much everything? I'm wanting to try sideloading them to make up for all the apps Android is missing. One of the ones I'm trying to find is Cartoon Networks Fire TV APK since it's not available for Android TV. I've found plenty of places that offer doing the opposite. Sideloading an Android version to the Fire but I can't find anywhere that has the Fire APK's to move to Android. The only app I've seen this done with is the Amazon Prime video APK to put on Android TV. So my question is why aren't there others since Android TV's app market is practically non existent and Fire TV's is quite plentiful? Does this not work most of the time, is that why I can't find anything else? Any info or ideas anyone has would be greatly appreciated.
