Android TV - USB drive issue since Android update to 8/Oreo

I have a TCL 65C2US television, which runs Android TV. I have had the TV for about a year now.

The version of Android TV on the television has just updated to Android 8 Oreo in the last couple of days, and since this occurred, the TV does not allow me to navigate to, access or read files from plugged in USB drives. It either (1) doesn’t detect the USB drive, (2) detects the drive but says the drive is empty, or (3) says the drive is “corrupt”. I have tried several different USB drives (all of which work 100% fine with my other devices) in both the USB ports on the 65C2US, and keep getting one of the previously listed problems.

Before the update, I was able to access and open files (mostly videos, which I played through an app from the Google Play Store) from my USB drives without issue. I have tried to access the USB drives using several file explorer apps (again, from the Google Play Store), however with each and every app I get one of the problems listed above. In one of the file explorer apps, I get the message "This device does not appear to support Android's Storage Access Framework", I am not sure if this means the recent update has removed the ability to access or read from a USB drive?!?

Can anyone please shed any light on this?

Thanks guys.

Google Assistant on Android TV in Russian

Is there any way to enable Google Assistant On Android TV In Russian? It works fine in English but as soon as the language is changed to Russian the assistant icon changes to microphone icon and the assistant is dumbed down to simple google searches.

The assistant works just fine in other languages on the mobile android. Why is it not enabled on Android TV?

Crave TV now available

Unless I'm mistaken, Crave TV was not available on Android TV up until now. The only way to use it was to have the Firestick APK side-loaded. It's now available in the Android TV Play Store natively.

Someone please correct me if this is old news.

Still waiting on Prime Video though...

Alternative Mi Box S remotes?

I'm finally delving into TV boxes and am getting the Mi Box S soon but I've been told that the remote doesn't have an IR emitter so you can't turn the TV on aside from using the HDMI feature. Are there any decent remote alternatives/replaces for the Mi Box S/Android TV that has an IR?

Anyway to stop tv from connecting to headphones other than unpairing?

I have Bluetooth (4.2) headphones that I like to use on my phone and TV. Only problem is, if I want to use them on my phone, I have to unpair it in the menu then re-pair when I want to use them on my TV again. Phone won't let me choose the headphones because it's connected to another device already. Any advice?

Best box for streaming

Hi,

I’m thinking about buying my first android tv box. I had an eye on the Shield but maybe it’s overkill for me ? I just need streaming only and it doesn’t support Dolby vision. No games.

I need or will use :

  • 4k with HDR. Support for dolby vision (shield doesn’t support dolby vision, only downside)
  • Netflix
  • Plex (client only, not PMS)
  • Amazon prime video
  • kodi
  • be able to sideload apps

I was thinking about the Fire tv 4k. Can you install any android app ? Do you have access to all google play store apps ? (I remind you I know nothing about android).

Any other box recommended in the same price range ?

thanks

what are my options to filter garbage pseudo science and fake news content from my grandparents android tv youtube app?

grandparents were always left aside when the family discussed about tv shows or viral videos, so they got a xiaomi mibox a few months ago, i personally recommended it cause of the voice search function and easy to use interface

i tought they were going to be using netflix to catch on tv dramas and youtube to check news and cooking tutorials and stuff, but they instantly gravitated towards awful and alarming new age garbage

at first i thought we should treated them as adults and let them decide what they want to watch, but its time to face the truth, they are getting senile and have trouble recognizing real documentaries from any pathetic badly edited video about flat earth, climate change denial or reptilians pouring mind control gases over the crops

and im afraid its getting dangerous, in the past they have been vulnerable to serious telephone frauds, and being ripped off by fortune tellers and such, and now they are getting kinda paranoid over the illuminatti and any number of other stupid stuff, they actually lose sleep over this BS

they are now starting to refuse taking their medicines to instead buy homeopathy, stopped eating certain produce cause "it has microchips in them" and a lot of other stuff that makes looking after them really hard

i know just censoring their tv box wont be the answer, they need attention and guidance, being treated and explained respectfully, they are not dumb, they superated their iliteracy to raise and get their sons to college, but they unfortunatelly are very gullible, so while we consult with a geriatric and or psychologist, we need to stop the stream of garbage that its being beamed to their TV

seriously, in this country the stuff thats on youtube its like "infowars" combined with buzzfeed, jhon edward and jerry sprinfield all at once. so other than cleaning their search history and subscribing them to good content, what can i do to filter their TV?

Ad-less YouTube for AndroidTV?

I really don't have a problem with ads or evil Google tracking my watching habits, so for my main devices I never bothered to look past the stock apps.

However I now have a MiBox in the car for the kids, hooked through phone's data plan, and suddenly efficient bandwidth utilization is a priority. That means:

- No ads

- Ability to restrict upper resolution

- Still linked to my YouTube account (the only way kids can find what to watch is through suggestions/recommendations feed from my account)

Any suggestions? Preferably something that navigates similar to the stock app.

Youtube for Android TV updated

2 days ago Google released update for Youtube for Android TV and here are notes:

• Reduced CPU usage
• Improved Network throughput
• Added Opus support
• Reduced frame drops on some platforms
• Resolved crashes that can occur in some instances
• Various other platform improvements

I can say the improvements are certainly visible on Sony 55XF7596, 4K/60fps is watchable without periodic stutters.

Shield -> TV + Soundbar (connected through ARC) "One Remote to rule them all"?

My question is, if i want to use the setup in the topic, so i connect the Shield to the TV and the TV is connected to the Soundbar with ARC. Can i use the Shield's remote to control the volume which suppose to control the soundbar volume as well?!

Update: as i see the Shield's remote is kinda basic, i would use a G20 instead.

Also can the Shield wake up the TV? My goal is to bypass the Bravia's internal Android TV as much as possible.

Watching full screen video from web browser app

I go to a website, click on video, make full size, and it plays on my TV but (best I can explain) goes pixelated for a split second than back to normal every ten seconds.

I've tried using different browsers same thing. I'm not trying to do anything illegal just watch local news from their website open to the public on a larger screen.

Every thing else works flawless.

Mibox S, Builtin Chromecast, 5.1 to Stereo - No Sound

Hello,

So i just got myself a mi box s (which has an inbuilt chromecast) and im trying to play 5.1 video streams and cast them to the chromecast. There is video but no sound or just some strange cracking noise. Im pretty sure it has to do with some missing codecs.

I googled the problem and found another redit post that discribed the issue pretty accurately. In this case though, the user tried to stream a local video file with 5.1 sound. The solution there, was to do so via plex. I have tried this solution but plex wont play any stream that has 5.1 audio. It plays stereo streams without any issues.

Has any of you ever dealt with this issue? If yes, id be gratefull about some help.

Thanks in advance

HDMI CEC turns off automatically

Sorry, might be a problem related to the Manufacturer, not Android TV in general. But I need serious help here.

I'm using a Onida Android TV (based on kitkat). After turning on HDMI CEC in settings of the TV, turning off the chromecast turns off my tv, but as soon as the chromecast turns on and the TV with it too, the HDMI CEC option is disabled again. So I can't turn the TV back off the second time, unless I turn it on again manually.
