Installed 2179 to Fix MiBox. Worked for 12 hours. Now Stuck on Black Mi logo screen.

Yesterday, this happened: https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidTV/comments/9am2ik/mibox_suddenly_unresponsive_to_both_remote/

Everything was fine and seemed stable with 2179. But today I paused I video playing on VLC to take a phone call. When I came back I found the screen black with the Mi, Dolby, HDMI and DTS logos. It looks like this:

https://imgur.com/a/kwAbcQU

And I just stays like that. Apparently forever.

I tried rebooting. I tried unplugging all the devices from the power and then rebooting after 10 minutes. Neither worked. It's connected directly to the TV via an HDMI cable. (Update 1: I have now tried it on a different TV. No change.)

Any ideas? Or should I just throw in the towel and shell out for an Nvidia Shield, which I don't really want to do. I've been happy with my MiBox until the last two days. But if this device is so buggy that I need to wipe and reinstall everything twice in 24 hours -- well, that might be the end.

-- Update 2 --

I was able to get into the Android recovery screen. Tried clearing the cache and looking at the logs. This is what I found:

https://i.imgur.com/T8BA7Ct.jpg

https://i.imgur.com/ZcgDO3Q.jpg

So I decided to try to reinstall 2179. It was a total failure:

I suspect this piece of junk is probably bricked.

Do you think I have reached the correct conclusion?

-- Update 3 --

I tried another idea below. Didn't work. I got no response on the other MiBox forum. I'm pretty sure this is a hardware failure of some kind.

But I have resolved the problem. I just ordered a Shield. I am completely sold on the Android TV platform. But I want a better, more robust implementation, and I think the Shield will offer me that.

Ever since the Oreo update it's been downhill with my MiBox. First there were just a few annoyances -- mainly audio issues. I was willing to live with them and wait for the updates. But then my MiBox froze, which seemed to be caused by a wifi and bluetooth issue. I updated to the beta build to recover from that. I was hopeful that'd resolve the problems because I really wanted to keep the product. And it did resolve the problems for about 12 hours. But then I think I had a hardware failure, and without being able to read or write to the disk, there's just no recovery. And rather than buy like for like and likely continue with a glitchy experience, I'm just spending the extra money for a Shield.

I hope it works out well.

Anyway, thanks for all your help.

DNS based Adblocker solutions no longer working after Oreo update

DNS based adblockers like blokada or DNS66 had stopped working or broke completely after oreo update. After the update, it looked like VPN established does not connect to the internet at all. Anyway to work around this? I see a lot of youtube based ads that are cropping up about a week ago. Using these did not entirely block ads but mitigated those. Using Mibox.

Any app I can run on Android TV to convert the audio track of MKV files?

I use my SHIELD TV as Plex Media Server and player and sometimes I need to convert some audio tracks to make them work fine with Plex.

(It has a bug that prevents correct playback with 4K HDR and AC3 to AAC transcoding)

Is there any app I can directly run on the SHIELD TV that can convert the audio track of MKV files? (specifically from AC3 to AAC)

Thanks.

Does the nvidia Shield MIC work with Store APPS?

Some of the Android TV boxes, like the MiBox (my current device), have problems to use the MIC in every different scenario than the Google Assistant.

I'm trying to find a device that has the MIC feature enabled for APPs, since I'm developing an Android TV app that needs MIC usage.

I've been thinking about getting an NVIDIA SHIELD. I know that the remote has an integrated MIC and it can be used with Google Assistant, but does any of you know if the MIC will work for example, inside a third party APP?

Thanks for your help :)

4K Google Cast Mi Box

Does 4k work for you guys? I am trying to cast 4k from Viaplay (25mbit h265), but it never reaches 25 mbit. I checked the monitor, and it does not utilise more than 8 mbit 1080p.

The Mi Box should support 4k casting, shouldnt it? Wifi is fast. Speedtest says 500 mbit.

PSA: If your Mibox has unexpected bugs on Oreo, a factory reset will fix 99% of your problems.

Unplug the Mibox, and after plugging it back in while it's booting press the center DPAD key (ENTER or OK key) and at the same time the BACK key. Select factory reset option from recovery menu.

MiBox Suddenly Unresponsive to Both Remote & AndroidTV App

Though it seems to start up normally, my MiBox is suddenly unreponsive to both the remote an the AndroitTV app. Indeed, it won't even show up on the app, despite being connected via the same wifi network. (Edit - Already replaced the batteries in the remote about a dozen times. No effect.)

I am at my wits end.

Any ideas?

-- UPDATE --

It wasn't a problem with the remote and bluetooth or wifi. The damn thing was just crashing for one reason or another. No resolution other than a full wipe and manual update to build 2179 according to these directions:

***** ALL DATA (app data, Downloads ...) on the Mi box will be ERASED ***

  1. Prepare a USB Stick with Fat32 file system (as usual).

  2. Create a file on the USB stick with the name "xiaomi_update" and the text: --update_package=/udisk/update.zip (all in one line, no empty lines) Under Windows us a program like notepad++

  3. copy the downloaded file to the USB stick and rename it update.zip

  4. Do the next step WITHOUT inserting the USB stick

  5. Boot to recovery and select "Wipe data" from the menu. This can take several minutes. Don't reboot after this step

  6. INSERT the USB stick

  7. Select update from the menu in the recovery menu

  8. Select update from udisk

  9. Update is starting and rebooting the system two or three times. Don't interrupt this process.

  10. Mi box is booting to the oreo system. Update process is complete and system setup (language...) is starting.

Should I make a shield tv app for my virtual world?

I'm the author of cryptovoxels, a virtual world where the different buildings in the city are owned on the blockchain - and I've got a version of it that runs really well on the shield TV. Should I package it up and put it on the app store? Exploring the city and checking out art galleries and so on while you lie back on the couch is really relaxing. :)

First impressions on the Mi Box after a lot of contemplation ( Updated to Oreo )

Hi,

I finally got my Mi Box on Saturday evening and in a couple of hours because I could see how limited Marshmellow was when it came to the launcher I updated the absolutely new device to Oreo keeping in mind the risk that was to take.

Straight away came the bug where if you have the device connected to the wifi then after set up the home screen shows blank and nothing happens until you press the back button that takes you to the language page again.

But after getting around and finally getting in I actually did not face too many issues. Just a couple of bug tbh.

Like the mouse pointed being limited to a side of the screen.

Like the volume on JBL charge is mute when the box wakes up and I try to resume spotify. Also I do not know how to actually set up youtube to show trending stuff from my country and not my location on home screen. ( I am an expat )

Installed Mobdro, Morpheus tv and sideloaded other apps. ES File explorer is shit so I had to use the google drive technique via Aptoide TV.

Netflix runs smooth ( I have 720p 60fps tv ) so no issues.

What was surprising impressive is how good the casting is. And what does not make sense is when Prime Music works flawlessly on Android TV why doesnt Prime Video work.

Any suggestions? I want to play some games like Minecraft PE and use the device more. Any help? or inputs?

Mi Box 3 or Mi Box 4?

I've lurked a bit but couldn't find any threads on the Mi Box 4. Is this because it does not have AndroidTV and uses its own operating system? Wondering which of the two boxes I should get, and if the Mi Box 4 brings any improvements to the table.
