Difference between Android TV and Chromecast

Hi all -- The Sony Android TVs say that they have Chromecast built in. I'm not clear on the difference between the two. Is Chromecast just the ability to cast videos from YouTube from your phone to the TV? Is there more to it? Thanks.

Best Option for Me?

Above average technical literacy but novice level comprehension of Android TV boxes, so here I wander...

Of the three which would be the best option for me: Plex, Kodi or Xiaomi Mi Box? Or any others that spring to your mind

MAIN things I'm looking for: one time payment instead of monthly subscription (up to $150), access to popular and new movies.

Extras that would take it over the top: live sports and TV

Not too demanding in terms of technical specifics, as long as it streams at a 1080rate I'm fine

Also, I'm based in Canada if that matters

Options for replacement shield remote?

I recently got a ShieldTV and it has been working great but the volume slider on the remote is really annoying (especially when you have a toddler!). I was wondering what options are out there to replace it with something else. I do have two old Mibox remotes, can I make them work with the ShieldTV? I don't want to use a phone as a remote either.

Not looking for a complex remote with a bunch of options/buttons, but voice would be nice. Just want something cheap/simple/easy and all functions will work out of the box without having to mess with it.

How do you cover up and clean your TV ?

I recently bought a new Android tv. I live in a place where dust sets in just a few days. While Im told tv units and peripherals usually do not require any cleaning as such , and not advisable to cover it up if its in daily use. Suggestions are welcome.

Any way to block youtubeTV ads?

Basically the title. I have a pihole but that DNS based blocker won't block Youtube or YoutubeTV since it apparently sends videos from the same domain that it sends ads from.

Trying to watch on demand content and it wants me to watch almost 5 minutes of ads before even playing the intro...

I saw that stopad used to work, but their website says they are discontinuing the service. I see that adlock is a thing, but will I be able to run that on androidTV? I dont know how different stock android is from androidTV and it just says "available for android"

I'm not as interested in blocking plain youtube (I think I get youtube premium free with youtubetv anyway). Moreso the long 5 minute ads on youtubeTV

Thanks

Beta 5 for Jellyfin got release today, huge improvements on ui

If you use jellyfin you'll be happy to update to the latest version, the app is looking amazing :)

It's good to see at least some devs don't treat Android TV as third citizen.

Is Youtube TV searchable by Google Assistant?

Is anyone able to search Youtube TV with Google Assistant?

The Youtube TV app is installed but not searchable on a 2018 Hisense 55H9E Plus running Android TV 8.0. The app does not even appear in the list of Searchable Apps in Android TV Settings.

It seems odd that Google Assistant on a Google Android TV cannot find content in Google Youtube TV.

How do I make AndroidTV boot straight to the menu interface?

Having a Philips 65PUS7601 running AndroidTV 8.0 Oreo, I'm overall pretty happy with it. One thing that bugs me, though, is that it automatically boots into the last used video source I've used. Since I never use it for TV reception, and since I only occasionally use an HDMI source, it's somewhat annoying - in 19 times out of 20, I start it to launch YouTube, HayWire or some other installed app.

All of this being said, is there any way to make AndroidTV default to its menu interface when turning on the device?

Hdmi cec , chromecast and mi box - my solution

Having seen some posts about the topics above, I’ve decided to share my set up - having chromecast functionality while using hdmi cec and making the TV turn on in an easy way with the mi box.

Now first things first the mi box is not a chromecast. You can’t cast to it when it’s off. So you have to turn it on first.

So the idea is to have hdmi cec turned on, and making sure that the mi box picks up the casts.

You activate google assistant and configure the mi box to be the “living room TV” or whatever.

Once you want to cast, you tell to google assistant “turn on the tv”. You can have the google assistant app on your device so that should be a non issue. It will turn on the tv and switch to the mi box hdmi channel (fun fact: my Samsung tv has an option that specifies a default menu, if you have this on it will change the mi box channel to that default menu/ channel a few seconds afterwards opening the mi box channel...Just turn that crap off and save some headaches)

Once the mi box turns on, which usually is pretty fast, you’ll be in the mi box hdmi channel and be able to cast to it.

I don’t don’t cast a lot, either I’m watching on my smartphone or I’m using the standard Samsung tizen apps because until now they have been working properly, but I do have a google home mini and after reading a bunch of comments I figured this would be of use to someone out there :) hope it helps!

“Turn tv off” also works:) Oh and plex. Plex also works really good!! :)

Now TV

I've got an MX Pro android box. Just started a free trial with Now TV purely for GOT later as I want to make sure I can watch with no issues. Play store wouldn't let me add the app so I managed to add apk and signed in no problem but it won't let me play content as it says it won't stream through hdmi. Is there any way I can get Now TV on this box please.

So frustrating as I can watch mostly anything on this box yet it's always the paid for content that has issues!

Black screen flicker on Sony 55x805e at 4k enhanced mode

Hi, I’m posting here hoping someone else has experienced this and has some new ideas about it. I had a Sony 55x720e TV (non-android) working flawlessly for an entire year, and last week dead pixels came up, so I got a brand new Sony 55x805e with Android 6.5 I believe (terrified of updates that might break even more things). A 25ft CableMatters certified hdmi 2.0b cable is connecting my PC to the TV (could probably make do with 15ft though).

This same cable always worked on hdmi enhanced mode, with the 720e at 4K 60hz RGB full or hdr, but with the new 805e I'm getting black screen flicker / signal drops at random intervals, anything from 20 seconds to 6 minutes.

If I set the hdmi ports 2 & 3 to standard instead of enhanced, the problem goes away but it forces limited output range 15-235 instead of 0-255 full rgb... and no hdr, I've seen similar threads but no one ever has a definitive solution or explanation.

This is only happening to my PC (nvidia 1080ti latest 425.xx drivers for Win10); my ps4 pro sends full rgb and doesn't have the issue. So I don’t think it’s the TV. Unfortunately the ps4 pro hdmi cable is too short to test with the PC.

Could the long hdmi cable have been damaged over time ? everything I see points to the cable being unstable for the bandwidth, but I can't wrap my head around it working flawlessly for an entire year with the first TV if that's the case.

These certified hdmi 2.0b cables are very expensive in my country, so I’d appreciate any ideas or thoughts about this before I burn more money on a new one

Thanks.

MiBox3 can't update or factory reset

https://i.redd.it/eykomj1v67s21.jpg

I have tried several times to update the last two updates, with no luck. Every time I tried to update it restarts, but I always get the message "Couldn't install system update"

I tried a factory reset and it has not resulted either, I also tried to enter the recovery menu ('OK' button, the circle in the middle of the directional pad and the back button) and nothing, it always restarts and returns to the menu without being updated.

I have also bought a usb cable Type A Male to Type A Male to restart it from ADB, I have connection problems with the remote control and also when an application is updating, it gets stuck and I have to disconnect the power cable.

The truth is that I do not know what else to do, I'm considering giving it up for lost and buying an Nvidia Shield.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!
